Pismo Beach, California

Pismo Beach is an idyllic beach town hugging the Pacific Ocean along California’s Central Coast. Just 10 miles from the university town of San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach is famous for its gorgeous beaches and clam chowder. It is dubbed the “clam capital of the world” and one of the best places on the west coast of the USA to visit in August.

Besides the obvious of hanging out at the beach and taking a stroll on the Pismo Pier, a visit to Pismo Beach isn’t complete until you have a clam chowder bread bowl at the super cute and casual Splash Café. Fun art murals of cartoon-like clams decorate the exterior walls. It is a favorite spot to get the best clam chowder in town since 1989.

For a little adventure, rent a dune buggy or drive your car out onto the beach between the shoreline and the rippling sand dunes of Oceano Dunes State Recreation Area. It happens to be one of only a handful of beaches you can drive on in California, so not to be missed.

A fantastic way to end your day in Pismo Beach is to head to Dinosaur Park. It sits atop high bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and offers stunning views of the coastline. It is also one of the best places to view the sunset while enjoying a picnic.

Weather

August is one of the warmest and sunniest months along the central coast making it an ideal time for beach days, kayaking, or hiking in this charming laid-back beach community. The average temperature ranges between 70 F to 75 F with little to no rain or humidity.

Best Way To Reach Destination

The easiest way to get to Pismo Beach is to fly into San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP), a quick 15-minutes drive. Alternatively, you can fly into Los Angeles or San Fransisco and drive 3 hours to Pismo Beach.

Best Place To Stay

Vanessa from Traveling Ness says, “If you are looking for a premier location to spend the night, stay at the Inn at the Pier. You’ll be steps away from the Pismo Pier and beautiful Pismo Beach. Plus, they have a rooftop pool and restaurant with spectacular views that can’t be beaten.”

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts (Photo courtesy of Samantha from New England Wanderlust)

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

For warm ocean water and the best weather, Martha’s Vineyard is hard to beat. While August is peak season for this picturesque island off the coast of Massachusetts, it’s worth visiting during this special time of the year. It is one of the best August beach destinations on the east coast of the United States.

In August, Martha’s Vineyard will have the warmest Atlantic Ocean water it experiences all year long, and with over 15 beaches to choose from, you’ll have your pick of some of the most stunning coastline in the Northeast.

One of the best beaches on Martha’s Vineyard to see is most definitely South Beach (sometimes called Katama Beach). This beach is open to the public, has free parking, and offers a 3-mile long gorgeous stretch of coastline that makes for a perfect beach day.

When you’re not at the beach, plan a day to explore the Aquinnah Cliffs and Gay Head Lighthouse. While located on the other side of the island, opposite where most visitors stay, it has some of the most breathtaking scenery on the entire island. It’s worth the effort to get there! Once you arrive, be sure to plan time to walk down to Moshup Beach, and admire the red cliffs from the shoreline.

You also can’t leave Martha’s Vineyard without exploring the charming towns. You’ll definitely want to spend a couple of hours in Oak Bluffs, which is home to the famous gingerbread cottages.

Be sure to walk around Edgartown, which is packed with New England charm, great shopping, and the beautiful Edgartown Lighthouse.

Weather

In August, you’ll experience average highs around 77°F during the day. You can also expect around 3 inches of rain over 7 days and about 13 days with humidity. On those days with humidity, it will feel a lot hotter.

Best Way To Reach Destination

The best airport to fly into is Boston Logan International Airport. Then, rent a car, and drive to either Hyannis or Falmouth on Cape Cod and take the ferry to the island. All total, this would take between 3 – 3.5 hours depending on ferry times.

Alternatively, you can also catch a local flight from Boston and fly directly to the island.

Best Place To Stay

Samantha from New England Wanderlust says, “One of the best places to stay on the island is the Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites which is located right in Edgartown. This hotel is walkable to the main part of town and many rooms have water views. “

best city break on east coast for a August getaway in united states
Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Washington, D.C.

Washington, DC is the capital city of the United States and one of the best east coast cities to visit in August in America. The city is filled with interesting history, stunning museums, and beautiful parks. In addition, it is home to the most important political institutions in the country.

If you are interested in learning more about the political process, visit the Capitol building or the White House. Alternatively, tour the courtrooms in the Supreme Court of the United States and learn about the judicial process in America.

Another great way to spend some time in Washington, DC is to visit the Smithsonian Museums. There are 21 museums in all and they are all free to visit. You can take a break from the midday heat and learn about American History, Natural History, Black History, Space History, and more.

Lastly, the great summer weather is perfect for a lovely stroll around the National Mall, a beautiful park with many monuments. Make sure you pass by the Lincoln Monument and the impressive World War II statute.

August is a great time to go to Washington DC. The month is filled with fun festivities and events. Some of the best are the Margarita March (celebrating margaritas, of course!) and the National Book Festival.

The sun is usually shining and the mood around the capital city is great in summer. Try to stay at least 5 days in Washington, DC, to see some of the best that it has to offer.

Weather

Washington, DC has average high temperatures around 86 F. There are many days full of sunshine that are perfect for exploring. However, there is also around 18 days of humidity, and about 3.5 inches of rain over 10 days.

Best Way To Reach Destination

Washington, DC is home to multiple airports. The Ronald Reagan Washington Airport is the biggest one and the one at which you will most likely arrive.

All of the airports in and around Washington, DC are connected to the Metro system, which is the easiest way to get to the city center. From the Ronald Reagan Airport, you have to take the yellow or blue line to the city. Express Bus lines are also available.

Best Place To Stay

best outdoor adventure destination on the west coast in august in the usa
Olympic National Park, Washington (Photo courtesy of Pixabay)

Olympic National Park, Washington

Olympic National Park is a fantastic place to visit any time of year. But visiting this US west coast national park for a August holiday brings a whole new level of excitement.

With higher elevations, like Hurricane Ridge, generally open and cleared of snow in August, there are a variety of activities perfect for the warmer weather, and plenty of wildflowers on display.

One of the best things to do this time of year is to hit the beaches. Marvel at the sea stacks, hike along the beach trails or look for wildlife in the waves.

Just remember that these beaches aren’t really for swimming. The wave conditions can be treacherous, and the water is generally colder than most people prefer to swim in.

Instead, check out the driftwood along the beach or look for interesting creatures in the tide pools at low tide. And a toe dip never hurt anyone either!

While there are more than 70 miles of beach from which to choose, you can’t go wrong with Ruby or Rialto Beach.

You also can’t visit Olympic National Park and not do some hiking. Try the Hurricane Hill Trail at Hurricane Ridge or the Hall of Mosses Trail in Hoh Rain Forest. If you love waterfalls, the Sol Duc Falls Trail should definitely make your list.

Weather

Weather in August is about as perfect as you can get in the Pacific Northwest, where rain is common the rest of the year. Daytime temperatures run in the mid-60s to mid-70s F in the lower altitude areas of the Park with no humidity. Of course, if you are headed up to Hurricane Ridge, expect a temperature drop as you ascend.

While this month is one of the driest in the Park, rain showers can still pop up.

Bring some layers for the cooler mornings, evenings, and higher altitudes. A rain jacket and waterproof hiking boots are never a bad idea.

Best Way To Reach Destination

The best way to reach the Olympic National Park is by flying into Seattle-Tacoma International and renting a car to make the drive.

Once on the road, you have two options. You can drive all the way by heading down towards Tacoma and then into the Olympic Peninsula, or you can take the ferry to Bainbridge Island for a more direct path.

Each route will take about 3 hours to reach the main entrance at Hurricane Ridge, but if you can swing the ferry, it is a great way to go (and has incredible views of Seattle as you pull away)!

Best Place To Stay

Jenny from Traveling in Focus says, “If you want to visit Hurricane Ridge or the Lake Crescent areas of the Park, stay in Port Angeles. The Terra Vista Chalet is an excellent option.

If you think you want to see Hoh Rain Forest or spend time on the incredible beaches, Misty Valley Inn in Forks is a better choice.”

Hoboken, New Jersey (Photo courtesy of Pixabay)

Hoboken, New Jersey

There is nothing like New Jersey summers! If you’re a city lover but don’t want to be overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, Hoboken, and Jersey City in New Jersey are fantastic city escapes in August on the east coast of the United States.

Many people consider Hoboken and Jersey City the “6th Borough”. There are many memorable things to do in Hoboken and Jersey City, from visiting the historical Frank Sinatra spots to enjoying the incredible dining scene.

A summer trip to Hoboken is incomplete without making memories at Pier 13. Situated along the Hudson River with spectacular views of New York City, Pier 13 boasts a 20s and 30s crowd with excellent food trucks, live music, and great vibes.

With Hoboken also being the birthplace of Frank Sinatra, you should also visit all the historical sites, like the Hoboken Historical Museum, and learn about the iconic American singer and actor.

During a beautiful August day in Jersey City, there’s nothing better than strolling the waterfront and eventually making your way to Liberty State Park. Not only can you enjoy a picnic in this beautiful park, which overlooks lower Manhattan, One World Trade Center, and the Statue of Liberty, but you can also do kayaking, paddle boarding, yoga, and more.

Weather

One of the top reasons Hoboken and Jersey City make great August destinations is the great weather. You get lots of sunny days with average temperatures ranging from highs in the low 80s°F to lows in the high 60s°F.

In addition, there is around 3.6 inches of rain over 10 days with about 13 day of humidity.

Best Way To Reach Destination

The best airport to fly into is Newark Liberty International Airport, a 20-minute drive from Hoboken and a 15-minute drive from Jersey City.

If you don’t have your own vehicle, take the NJ Transit train to either Secaucus Junction and then hop on the PATH train to Hoboken Terminal. Additionally, you could take the NJ Transit bus to Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City. Getting an Uber or Lyft from the airport is also easy.

Best Place To Stay

Taylor from Brown Eyed Flower Girl says, “The best accommodations in this area are the W Hoboken or Hyatt Regency Jersey City. Both hotels are situated along the Hudson River and overlook the dreamy New York City skyline. They are also in close walking distance to many great restaurants and bars.

best places to visit in the USA in august
McCarthy, Alaska (Photo courtesy of Heather from This Noshtalgic Life)

McCarthy, Alaska

Nestled in the vast expanse of Wrangell St-Elias National Park, America’s largest national park, McCarthy, Alaska serves as a gateway to the wilderness that surrounds it, complete with glaciers and towering mountains.

August in McCarthy is an invigorating blend of late summer and the onset of fall and one of the best times to visit this beautiful American getaway destination.

Toward the end of the month is when the Aspens turn golden and the tundra starts to change colors, and it’s quite magical. Below your feet, the green turns to reds, deep magenta, and bright yellow. Berries such as blueberries and lingonberries ripen and dot the landscape.

There are several  must-do experiences in McCarthy, Alaska. Opt for flight-seeing with companies like Wrangell Mountain Air or McCarthy Air. It is the most epic way to take in the vastness of the National Park. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the landscape, with glaciers, rivers, and humungous mountain peaks, and can choose your flight time.

You’ll also want to take a shuttle to Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark. This is a former copper mine from the 1920s where you can take a tour and explore the well-preserved buildings. It’s incredible to imagine life in this area during the early 20th-century copper rush and the challenges of that time.

Finally, hiking the Root Glacier is something you won’t want to miss. For a lengthier trek across the glacier, you will want to bring your own crampons for safety reasons. However, many can hike the initial part of the glacier trail in decent footwear, exploring the ice until it gets too slippery.

As an alternative, there are endless hikes in the area that don’t need crampons, some are lengthy steep trails that lead to remains of old mines. You really can’t go wrong with any of them.

In essence, McCarthy in August is a genuine Alaskan experience, set in a National Park that epitomizes wilderness.

Weather

The temperatures in August can vary quite a bit during the day, ranging from 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Definitely bring rain gear and warm layers for your visit so you are comfortable no matter what happens.

The weather is a mix of sunny spells and sudden rain showers. (You can expect around 8 inches of rain over 17 days.) It’s this unpredictability that makes August so exciting and raw! Termination dust—the first snow that dusts the mountain tops—arrives reminding all that winter is coming soon.

Best Way To Reach Destination

The trip to McCarthy isn’t a simple one. For international travelers, the best entry point is the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. From there, one can drive to McCarthy in a “McCarthy Road approved” rental car, which takes about 7-8 hours. While the drive is lengthy, it promises an adventure and impressive views of the Alaskan wilderness.

Best Place To Stay

Heather from This Noshtalgic Life says, “Enjoy staying right in the heart of McCarthy at a classic little hotel! Ma Johnson’s offers guests a direct connection to the town’s storied history. The hotel’s rooms and common areas are adorned with period-appropriate furnishings and artifacts. Original photographs, vintage furniture, and decorative touches transport guests back in time!”

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming (Photo courtesy of Devon from Say Yes To The Trip)

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park is the world’s first national park, established in 1872. The park receives over 4 million visitors each year and it’s easy to see why. Yellowstone is home to the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 U.S. states, the third largest hot spring in the world, 290 waterfalls, 500+ active geysers, and 1,000 miles of hiking trails.

Yellowstone is HUGE and offers plenty of things to do for visitors as one of the best places to visit in the USA in August. A must-stop spot on any tour of Yellowstone National Park is Lower and Upper Falls, located in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Exploring the National Park would also be incomplete without experiencing the vibrant colors of the Grand Prismatic Spring. The best time to visit is on a clear, sunny day during the mid-afternoon.

August is an ideal month to visit Yellowstone because all areas of the Park can be explored (no road closures) and the snow has melted so you have access to almost all the hiking trails.

It’s also the beginning of rut season for elk and bison, so it’s an active month for wildlife.

If you can time it right and visit in mid to late August after many schools have resumed, you can even escape the peak summer crowds.

Weather

In August, Yellowstone National Park experiences average temperatures of 74°F as a high and 42°F as a low. The days will be warm and long and the nights a little chilly so be sure to bring a light jacket. You can leave the rain jacket at home though as there’s little chance of rain in August. There is no humidity.

Best Way To Reach Destination

The closest airport to Yellowstone National Park is a tie between Jackson Hole Airport located in Jackson, WY (about a 2.5-hour drive from the South Entrance of Yellowstone) and Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (approximately a 1.5-hour drive to the North Entrance of Yellowstone).

Best Place To Stay

Devon from Say Yes To The Trip says, “The best place to stay in Yellowstone National Park is Old Faithful Inn. If you can, select a room facing the geyser so you can experience the best views.”

Without a doubt, Mackinac Island is one of the best August trips that you can take in the United States. This charming car-free island sits in the middle of Lake Huron tucked away in between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, and is filled with stunning Victorian-style homes.

Afterward, guests can visit Fort Mackinac, the Butterfly Conservatory and Arch Rock while exploring the many hiking trails in Mackinac Island State Park.

While there are plenty of beaches on Mackinac Island, they tend to be rocky and the water cold. However, you and your family can always head to the beach at Windermere Point and skip some stones since this is the perfect spot for it.

Visiting Mackinac Island in August is amazing since you can attend the multi-day Fudge Festival at the end of the month. Highlights include coloring walls, fudge making, firing the canon at  Fort Mackinac, guess the flavor contests, art walks, and more.

Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada (Photo courtesy of Sierra from Island And Alpine)

Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada

When looking for one of the best holidays in the USA in August, Lake Tahoe should be at the top of the list. This gorgeous alpine lake sitting across the California-Nevada state line is the largest in the country and offers incredible views, perfect weather, and many places to see and things to do.

Beautiful beaches surround Lake Tahoe with plenty of space for swimming, boating, paddle boarding, and picnics. Sand Harbor is among the most popular while Kings Beach is conveniently located in town. Sugar Pine Point State Park is a hidden gem for spending the day.

One of the best ways to experience the views is to ride rental bikes on the East Shore Path from Incline Village to Sand Harbor. This three mile paved path lines the water and provides access to several hidden coves that most visitors never see. This is truly a bucket list activity.

No visit to Lake Tahoe is complete without a visit to Emerald Bay. Park at the overlook for iconic photos and incredible sunset views. Consider hiking the steep, but short, Vikingsholm Trail down to the water to experience the bay up close.

While many other areas of the country are facing their hottest temperatures in August, the weather is fantastic in Lake Tahoe. The chilly water has warmed up a bit making it more comfortable for swimming at its amazing beaches. By mid-August, the summer crowds start to dwindle with easier parking at popular spots.

Best Place To Stay

Sierra from Island And Alpine says, “Lake Tahoe offers quieter vacation home rentals on the North Shore near Kings Beach and Incline Village. Most hotels are located on the more active South Shore.

The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort is an excellent option for beautiful rooms, incredible views, and a convenient location.”

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of San Francisco is probably the Golden Gate Bridge. The orange suspension bridge connects San Francisco with Marin County to the north, and is one of the most iconic symbols of the city. You can experience the bridge in several ways, including walking or biking across it or seeing it from one of the many area viewpoints.

Visiting Alcatraz Island is another one of the top things to do in San Francisco. The former prison is located offshore from San Francisco. Tours are required to visit Alcatraz, and they typically sell out so make sure to book in advance.

On the island, you’ll see the prison cells, common areas, and more while learning about what life was like for the prisoners and guards residing on the island. You’ll board the boat to Alcatraz at Pier 33. Before or after your tour, make sure to pay a visit to Pier 39’s resident sea lions!

There are lots of other iconic San Francisco landmarks to see, including the Painted Ladies at Alamo Square (known for being featured in the opening sequence of Full House), Lombard Square (often called the crookedest street in the world), and the Palace of Fine Arts. The city is also home to one of the oldest Chinatowns in the country, which is packed with delicious places to eat.

In addition to the great weather, there are several events in San Francisco that make August a great time to visit. Baseball season is in full swing, so you can check out a SF Giants or Oakland A’s game if you’re a sports fan. Outside Lands, one of the city’s largest music festivals, is also held each year in August.
