Bristol is a place where old meets new and one of the most exciting cities in the south of England to go for a August getaway. It is a maritime city steeped in history, in particular, the areas surrounding the dockside. The notorious pirate Black Beard lived here before setting sail. There are also some fantastic beaches near Bristol.
Other maritime historical icons include the SS Great Britain, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (he’s the same guy who designed the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge and Temple Meads Station). Brunel was also voted “the second greatest Britain of all time” (only surpassed by Winston Churchill).
Fast forward a couple of hundred years, and you’ll find Bristol has a buzzing street art scene. Banksy artwork is dotted all over, particularly in Bristol’s underbelly of Stokes Croft, where you’ll find hundreds of pieces of street art by loads of local and international artists.
Finally, one of Bristols most iconic festivals is the International Balloon Fiesta, held at Ashton Court in August. This festival has run annually since 1979 and is one of the largest in Europe. Teams from all over the world bring their hot air balloons to participate in mass ascents, where 100s of colourful balloons launch at a time. One of the best places for an August trip in the UK is the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales. Located approximately one hour north of the capital Cardiff, this is one of only three national parks in Wales.
There are plenty of hiking opportunities in the Brecon Beacons. South Wales’s highest peak, Pen-y-Fan is a must. Depending on your fitness level, the return trip to the summit will take around two hours. But get there early. Although August is a great time to visit Wales, it can get busy and the car park may fill up, especially if the weather is sunny and warm.
Another thing to do in Beacons is to visit some of the waterfalls dotted around the National Park. Discover Sgwd Yr Eira Waterfall or Lower Blaen y Glyn near Talybont-on-Usk.
There are also several castles worth visiting around the edge of the National Park including Tretower Castle, Crickhowell Castle, Abergavenny Castle, and Carreg Cennen Castle. The towns within the Park and on the permitter are great places to wander or even for a bite to eat.

Canterbury is in the county of Kent in the southeastern extremity of Great Britain. It has been the spiritual head of the Church of England for almost five centuries and it is the most visited place in the region. It is one of the best cities to go to in the United Kingdom for an August vacation.
There are many things to explore including several significant historic sites as Canterbury has been populated since the Paleolithic period (2.5 million years ago). This includes three buildings that are on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Those are the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey from the 6th century; the Church of St Martin which is the oldest church in England; and of course, Christ Church Cathedral Canterbury (more commonly known as Canterbury Cathedral), a breathtaking mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and the place where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170.
Arguably, the most important building in town is Canterbury Cathedral. It dates back to the 11th century and since then has been rebuilt in many styles. It includes the beautiful Harry Bell Tower at 236 feet high with its glorious 20 bells. Prior to visiting, check the hours of service as it is closed to the public during these times.
Interspersed with exploring these remarkable buildings, make sure you walk around the narrow and cobbled streets in the historic part of town and enjoy the restaurants and shopping available. The Isles of Harris and Lewis are in the Outer Hebrides, a group of islands north of mainland Scotland. There are 12 inhabited islands in the archipelago with the Isles of Harris and Lewis being the largest with the most to see and do. It is one of the best places to spend time in August in Great Britain.
Stunning scenery is one of the main reasons to go this far north and the area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. There are many hills to climb with panoramic views over the beaches below with the Atlantic stretching into the distance. Some of the best hikes are Beinn Dhubh, Ceapabhal and Huiseabhal Mor.
Luskentyre beach on Harris is often ranked as one of the prettiest in Europe and on a sunny day when the tide is out, it is easy to see why. Nearby Seilebost and Scarista beaches also deserve a visit.
Lewis also has many fantastic beaches, with Uig Sands being the most impressive. This is where the famous Uig chessmen were found buried in the sand. They were carved from whale bone and walrus tusk in the 12th Century and a few of the pieces can be viewed at Museum nan Eliean in Stornoway.
In between visiting pretty beaches, make sure you stop at the Calanais standing stones. They are similar to the much better known Stonehenge but with a fraction of the crowds.

The weather in the Outer Hebrides is changeable, to say the least. It is not unusual to experience all four seasons in a day.

Located about 220 kilometers from Edinburgh and 30 kilometers from Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham is Northern England’s hidden gem. Like many English cities, Durham has a rich Romanesque history and British charm. It is also a compact university city that is perfect if looking for a day trip in August in the United Kingdom.
One of the best ways to get there from either the north or south is by train. As the train approaches Durham, a striking and enormous Norman cathedral comes into view. Dating back from 1093, the Durham Cathedral was originally a monastic Cathedral and remained so for over one thousand years. Unlike many other important Norman buildings in the country, the Cathedral has mostly remained intact from its original. In addition, the throne in the Cathedral is in fact the highest in Christendom, even one inch higher than the Pope’s.
Visitors are welcome to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site for free. It is also the venue of various local ceremonies and events, including the congregation of the nearby Durham University. Don’t forget to walk through and take pictures of the cloisters, they were featured in the first two Harry Potter movies as the courtyard of Hogwarts.
On the other side of the Cathedral, take a tour of the Durham Castle Museum, which is part of the oldest college in Durham University.
Make sure you leave time to explore the hilly and cobbled streets in the historic town center. In addition, take a pleasant walk along the pretty wooded riverbanks of River Wear and admire the many incredible stone bridges such as the Framwellgate Bridge, Prebends Bridge, Elvet Bridge, and Kingsgate footbridge.

This small city of about 47,000 sits at the far northeast end of the Great Glen, a glacial valley that basically splits Scotland in half on the diagonal. Weymouth is a British seaside town on the Southwest coast of the UK. It is one of the best summer beach vacation destinations in Great Britain for a long or short weekend trip away from the hustle and bustle of London.
Weymouth Beach is among the top beaches in the United Kingdom. Take a walk along the golden sand and admire the contrast against the sea and green hills in the distance. Afterward, make sure to stop at Gloucester Pub right across the way–their cayenne crispy coated wings and homemade bleu cheese dip are memorable. If you are visiting on a weekend, make sure you look for the Quayside Music Festival down by the harbor hosted every weekend in May and August. It features local and well-known artists.
A fun daytime adventure is to take a 20-minute bus ride for a few pounds across the intercoastal causeway to Portland. York Minster is an unmissable landmark and should be on your visit list. Built in the 7th century and the center of Christianity in northern England, this cathedral has the largest stained glass window in the country and is magnificently huge!
Clifford’s tower is also excellent to see. The tower was built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror and has been restored twice after being burnt to the ground.

The Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland is a brilliant destination for a summer break in the United Kingdom. This is the place to come if you’re looking for incredible coastlines and beaches. Half way along the coast is the famous Giant’s Causeway – a fantastic natural wonder of volcanic rocks close to the town of Bushmills.
It’s easy to spend several hours at the Giant’s Causeway. There’s an excellent National Trust Visitor Centre with interactive exhibits highlighting how the landscape was formed. From there, it’s a 10 minute walk down to the waterfront where the many hexagonal rocks fill the landscape from the cliffs into the sea. The path takes visitors quite some distance along the seafront before steps lead you up to the cliff top for an elevated view of the coast.
There are beaches all along the Atlantic Coast but several stand out. Portstewart is brilliant for families – it allows visitors to drive their cars right onto the beach. In addition, Portrush is fun for nightlife while Whiterocks beach is wonderful for a scenic walk.
If your dates are flexible, each May the Antrim Coast plays host to the North West 200 – an exhilarating motorcycle race along the narrow coastal road. The road is closed to local traffic while the race takes place. Incredibly, the bikes reach speeds of up to 200 miles an hour.

Peak District National Park was England’s first national park. It is the most centrally located, which in turn makes it the most accessible in the UK. Melrose is a small town in the Scottish borders about 1 hour south of Edinburgh and close to the border with England. The Scottish Borders are known for rolling hills and quiet countryside. There are none of the dramatic landscapes of the highlands of Scotland but they are still stunning. It’s a popular area with walkers and the warm weather in August can supply a good day exploring. There are a number of long distance paths in the area and hills to climb. In addition, Melrose is overlooked by the three Eildon hills and the views from the top are well worth the effort.
Melrose also attracts those with a love of history. The main attraction is Melrose Abbey. This ruined abbey dominates the town and is one of the prettiest abbeys in Scotland with its pink-hued stone. It’s said that the heart of Robert the Bruce, the 14th century king of Scotland who freed Scotland from English rule, was buried there when he died. It’s an incredibly picturesque place to spend a day.
Another famous author made his home nearby. Sir Walter Scott wrote poetry and the popular Waverley Novels in the 19th century. Much of his writing was inpired by the Scottish Borders. You can visit his home and extensive grounds at Abbotsford and his burial place at Dryburgh Abbey.
The Beyond Borders Festival takes place at the end of August at nearby Traquair Castle. The event brings together political voices, artists and writers to talk about the pressing events of the world while also exhibiting films, performances and having space for wellness too.

London is one of the world’s great cities, a center of culture and history, and one of the most exciting places for a summer visit in the UK. London landmarks like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and the theater district in the West End are all must-see London sights, especially if you’re a first timer in London. There are wonderlands of history, music and some of the best cuisines anywhere. But if you’ve got more time in London or have already been there, you need to check out the area known as South Bank across the Thames.
South Bank is one of the cultural centers of London. It is located on the south riverbank and extends from Westminster Bridge in the west to Blackfriars Bridge in the east.
There is something for everyone in this exciting neighborhood. The first group of attractions just over the Westminster Bridge is The Sea Life Aquarium, The London Dungeon, and the iconic London Eye. These are all within meters of each other. If you’ve got small kids, this is an ideal collection of educational and fun activities. They are also fantastic attractions for older/teen children.
Further west by the riverbank, you’ll come to the Southbank center, a real cultural powerhouse composed of the National Theater, founded by Sir Laurence Olivier; the British Film Institute where they show top rated independent films; and the world-renowned Tate Modern Museum.
As if that wasn’t enough to keep you busy for a “fortnight” (that’s British for “two weeks”), there is also the Globe Theater, a replica of the open-air theater where Shakespeare performed his plays. There are lots of other excellent places to visit in Southbank, but one remaining biggie is Borough Market, a huge street market selling everything from seafood to produce to amazing cheeses. Borough Market has been in the same area for about 1000 years! It is first mentioned in a chronicle from 1014. By the time the Middle Ages rolled around, the market had been happily shucking oysters for centuries. It became an extension of London in the early 1400s.

Brighton and Hove, located along England’s scenic south coast, is a city known for its inclusivity, vibrant nightlife, and eclectic culinary and shopping scene.
Informally recognized as the UK’s infamous LGBTQ+ capital, the resort of Brighton is remarkably colorful; adorned with pride flags and vividly painted buildings.
While Brighton is a pleasure to visit during any time of the year, it’s in August where the city really comes to life as it hosts its world renowned Pride event, consisting of a parade and a myriad of other events that are spread throughout the entirety of the city. While this does prompt a hike in prices – so book early! – it’s a completely worthwhile experience in which to partake. After all, you can’t visit the best and biggest Rainbow City in the UK (and arguably the world) and not dive headfirst into the activism, camaraderie and glitter that accompanies the esteemed Brighton Pride.

When it comes to places to visit in the UK, people often forget about Wales. The capital city of Wales is Cardiff, and it is easy to take a day trip to Cardiff from London.
Cardiff is a beautiful city full of greenery with the fantastic Bute Park at the heart of the city. This parkland is not for the fainthearted as it is 56 hectares equivalent to 75 football pitches in size! With over 130 acres of landscaped gardens and over 3000 different types of trees within its boundary, you could spend a whole day wandering this area alone.
It would be a crime to talk about Cardiff and not mention the most famous attraction, Cardiff Castle. The site of Cardiff Castle was originally a roman fort built atop a hill which was eventually overtaken by the Normans. The keep, which sits on top of the hill, to this day is part of the original construct. Since then, it has had many transformations over the centuries. First, as a privately owned residence by the medieval Lords of Glamorgan. Most recently, by the Bute family who gifted Cardiff Castle and the surrounding parklands to the people of Cardiff in 1947.
