Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina and Virginia

By Bret from Blue Ridge Mountains Travel Guide

Stretching 469 miles through the Blue Ridge Mountains– from Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia– the Blue Ridge Parkway is arguably the most epic road trip in the United States of America. It’s also the #1 most visited unit in the entire US National Park system and one of the best destinations to visit in the USA in June.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the longest linear park in the country, taking travelers through the Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests. So naturally there are a lot of things to do along the way, including some 200 remarkably scenic Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks that offer stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Best Things To Do

The 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain in the Eastern US, with numerous different hiking trails and a relatively easy and short paved path to the observation platform at the summit.

Grandfather Mountain State Park is also home to some of the area’s most epic trails (including several with ladders to climb massive boulders). The privately-owned Grandfather Mountain attraction is home to the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, a small zoo featuring native North Carolina animals, and myriad picnic areas.

Virginia’s Mabry Mill is one of the region’s many historical attractions, not to mention the single most photographed spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

June is an especially great time to make the journey along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trees become a verdant green and wildflowers such as rhododendrons, mountain laurel, and flame azaleas are in bloom throughout the month.

There are also annual events such as the NC Rhododendron Festival in Bakersville, Art in the Park in Blowing Rock, and Doc Watson Day in Boone.

It is one of the best places to go in America for a June trip.

Weather

The weather (which varies greatly depending on the elevation) is relatively warm with average highs in the 80s, yet the mountains offer cooler temperatures than you’ll find in the lower elevations.

There is about 3″ of rain in June and about 8 days with some humidity.

How Best To Reach The Destination

There are many airports that will give you access to different parts of the Blue Ridge Highway. The major ones include Charlotte, Nashville, or Atlanta. The closest one is in Asheville, North Carolina.

Hotel Recommendation

Bret says, “There are only a few hotels and resorts located along the Parkway, including the historic Switzerland Inn in Little Switzerland NC and the Peaks of Otter Lodge in Bedford VA.

But part of the fun of driving the Blue Ridge Parkway is exploring some of the charming little mountain towns along the way, many of which offer an array of hotels, resorts, and B&Bs. Our favorites include the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock NC, the Pisgah Inn in Canton NC, and Wintergreen Resort near Waynesboro VA.”

By Jackie from Jou Jou Travels

You might know that Nashville is called “Music City.” It’s nickname dates back centuries. Back then as in today, the city is overflowing with amazing live music, especially country music.

One of the best things to do in Nashville on a summer vacation is to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame. Here you will find many artifacts including Elvis Presley’s ‘Solid Gold’ 1960 Cadillac. Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, MS and he lived in Memphis, TN for sometime. He spent some time in Nashville and recorded more than 200 songs at the historic RCA Studio B.

If you feel like exploring outside, consider walking over Nashville’s pedestrian bridge so you can see the city skyline. The bridge is over 3,000 feet and one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world.

After that, you might be feeling hungry so be sure to try Nashville Hot Chicken, which is fried chicken with a kick. The best-known place for some delicious Nashville Hot Chicken is Hattie B’s!

Nashville is home to a lot of decorative murals. Make sure that you keep your eyes out for them when you are exploring. These include the “I Believe in Nashville” (2702 12th Avenue South), “Drippy Lips” (1814 21st Avenue South), “Draper James” (2608 12th Avenue South), and “WhatLiftsYou Wings” (302 11th Avenue South).

There are many things to do in June especially for country music fans, making it one of the best American cities to visit on a summer trip. The CMA Fest is an outdoor music festival with country bands like Rascal Flatt and Tim McGraw.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

By Jessica from Uprooted Traveler

Towering sea stacks, lush coastal forests and a charming town full of quaint cottages, Cannon Beach, along the breathtaking Oregon coast, offers these things and more. With beautiful parks for hiking, incredible beaches, and a thriving community, this is one of the best beaches for a summer holiday in the United States.

There’s an array of awesome things to do in Cannon Beach. For example, walk along the eponymous beach to see its famed 235-foot tall Haystack Rock- consider exploring its tide pools at low tide, observing the puffin colony that lives on the rock at this time of year, or having a beach campfire.

For something a bit more active, Cannon Beach is home to some stunning hikes in Ecola Park, like the 4.3 mile hike to Indian Beach. This hike winds through a mossy green forest to a beach, strewn with picturesque sea stacks, that was featured in both Twilight and The Goonies.

And for the adventurous souls, you can even try your hand at surfing (or simply watch surfers) in the Pacific Ocean’s chilly waters at nearby Short Sands Beach.

There is an annual Sandcastle Contest in June, where artists and novices alike build castles, structures, and other whimsical designs on Cannon Beach’s shores, along with a fun run and live music to celebrate the competitors.

Weather

While you’re more likely to don a sweater rather than a bikini along this coastline, June is nonetheless a wonderful time to visit, with pleasant daytime temperatures in the 60s and a decent chance of clear skies. There is only 1.7″ of rain.

June is treated as a shoulder season- so you’ll also deal with less crowds and have a better chance of scoring a deal on lodging.

How Best To Reach The Destination

To get here, fly into Portland and make the short, yet beautiful hour and a half drive northwest to the town.

Hotel Recommendation

Jessica says, “To accompany your exploration of this cute coastal town, consider a stay at The Ocean Lodge, which is conveniently located by the town’s downtown area and offers a cozy fireplace in every room.”

New York City (Photo courtesy of Colton Duke from Unsplash)

New York City, New York

By Samantha from Find Love And Travel

One of the best cities to go to for a summer getaway in the United States is New York City. With incredible weather, you will have a great time exploring all the city has to offer including a stroll through Central Park or Hudson Yards, and experiencing Times Square.

Central Park is one of the most iconic places to visit in New York City. Believe it or not, Central Park offers 843 acres of lawns, lakes, parks, and more. Some local favorites include Bow Bridge, Strawberry fields, Gapstow Bridge, and renting rowboats from central The Loeb Boathouse. Consider renting a bike and exploring the park in order to see as much as possible.

Another must in any New York itinerary is exploring Hudson Yards. Walk the spectacular High Line route to this newer NYC site which offers great shopping and eating.

Make sure you give yourself time to climb up the spectacular “Vessel”. Comprised of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs, the vertical climb provides stunning views of the city, the river and beyond. Hudson Yards is also home to The Edge, the highest sky deck in the Western Hemisphere.

Additionally, you can’t visit New York without taking a stroll through Times Square. With bright lights, giant billboards, and all the chaos that makes New York, well, New York, it’s a must-see! However, if you want to save money in New York City, avoid eating or staying near Times Square.

If you have already been in Times Square, then consider crossing the Brooklyn Bridge to DUMBO, Brooklyn instead, and exploring Brooklyn Bridge Park!

There are some amazing annual events in June in New York City. For example, New York hosts the Gay Pride Parade, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, and the Mermaid Day Parade in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Weather

June makes for the perfect time to visit New York because the temperatures start to hit those sunny 80’s, but without many humid, sticky days that make the city a little less enjoyable.

How Best To Reach The Destination

Where you are flying from will determine whether you want to fly into one of the three airports servicing New York City – JFK, Laguardia, or Newark (New Jersey). All airports offer public transportation to the city, or you have the option to get a cab, Uber, or Lyft. You should not rent a car.

Hotel Recommendation

The Artezen Hotel in the Financial District is a small luxury hotel with above sized rooms, comfy beds, free snacks and an empty mini bar ready for personal use. It offers rooms with two queen sized beds, and enough room for multiple suitcases and people.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming (Photo courtesy of Taryn from Happiest Outdoors)

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

By Taryn from Happiest Outdoors

Located in northern Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park has some of the most spectacular scenery in America with lots of geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, wildlife. The park is huge, so give yourself a few days to see it all.

Since it sits on top of a giant dormant volcano, Yellowstone is home to many unique geothermal features like Old Faithful, and the rainbow-colored water of Grand Prismatic Spring. With its unique terraces, Mammoth Hot Spring is also worth visiting.

Most visitors stay close to the paved roads, so you should go hiking in Yellowstone to see the heart of the national park and to get away from the crowds. You’ll also have a better chance of spotting wildlife like bison, elk, coyote, and pronghorn.

Yellowstone National Park is one of the best places to visit in June in the USA because the snow is gone and the park is fully open. All that snowmelt also means the waterfalls are thundering in full force. In addition, the Park can be very busy with families in the summer months, but in June, it’s not as crowded since many kids are still in school.

Weather

Since Yellowstone is in the Rocky Mountains, most of the park is over 7000 feet above sea level. That means that it can be cool, even in summer, with highs in the 60s and 70s, and night time lows in the mid-30s. Afternoon thunderstorms are also common, so pack a raincoat.

How Best To Reach The Destination

If you’re flying, the closest major airports are Bozeman (1.5 hours away), Billings (2.5 hours), and Salt Lake City (4.5 hours).

Hotel Recommendation

Taryn says, “Since Yellowstone is so big, it’s best to stay in the Park to cut down on driving each day. There are several incredible historic hotels including the Lake Hotel and the spectacular Old Faithful Inn, which is one of the largest log buildings in the world.

If you’re into nature or on a budget, camping in Yellowstone should be on your bucket list. Norris Campground is the most central, and it’s right next to lots of geysers.”

Canyonlands National Park, Utah

By Krystianna from Volumes and Voyages

One of the absolute best places for summer trips in America is none other than Canyonlands National Park right outside of Moab, Utah. Most people visit nearby Arches National Park, but even one day in Canyonlands NP is truly enough to experience what the National Park has to offer.

Canyonlands is a US National Park that is most well known for its incredible scenery and landscape. Visiting in June allows you to not only beat the summer Utah heat but also the crowds that the summer months can bring.

There are many great things to do in Canyonlands, including hiking to the Mesa Arch for sunrise. This is the most popular viewpoint in the entire Park. It’s also a super short hike that will only take about 20 minutes.

A truly underrated thing to do is explore the Visitor Center. No matter which district in the Park you visit, the Visitor Center is a great spot to get acquainted with it. You can also chat with park rangers to get some insider tips or see if there are any trail closures.

Last but not least, consider doing a scenic drive through the National Park. There are tons of great overlooks that don’t require any hiking (like Shafer Canyon Overlook or Buck Canyon Overlook). Crater Lake National Park, Oregon (Photo courtesy of Debbie from World Adventurists)

Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

By Debbie from World Adventurists

Crater lake is one of Oregon’s most unique features. Created over 7,700 years ago, a volcanic eruption caused the peak of Mount Mazama, a 12,000-foot-tall-volcano, to crumble. It was filled with rainwater and snowmelt over 600-800 years to become what it is today. With no streams flowing into the lake, the water is a gorgeous bold blue.

From Mid to end of June, you may find some snow on the ground, but most facilities will be open. It is one of the best places to visit in June in the USA because you will miss the busy summer crowds and enjoy a more peaceful visit.

One of the first things you will want to do is drive the 33-mile Rim Road. Known as one of the most scenic byways in the United States, you’ll be wide-eyed at the several pull-over areas that showcase the Lake from different perspectives.

For more incredible scenery, several hikes will give you views that you cannot see from road level. If there is still lots of snow on the ground, you can rent snowshoes at the Rim Village Gift Shop. In June, always find out conditions and current trail recommendations before you head out so you know if you should be wearing hiking or snow shoes.

You will not want to miss taking a cruise around the Crater Lake. There are a few different options, including a 2-hour cruise, or a shuttle to and from the famous Wizard Island. The only way to get on the water is by taking one of these boat options. They do not allow personal boats.

Weather

In June, daily highs at Crater Lake National Park is 75 degrees F, and evening lows average 45 degrees F, with very little rain.

How Best To Reach The Destination

The closest major airport to Crater Lake National Park is Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport. You should expect a two-hour drive.

Hotel Recommendation

Debbie says, “The Mazama campground opens a couple of weeks into June. Otherwise, the historic Crater Lake Lodge has incredible views of the Lake.”

It offers awe-inspiring alpine peaks, crystal clear lakes, and tons of wildlife. It is one of the best places to spend time in June in the United States. There is so much to see and do for nature lovers, the possibilities are endless.
