Shipwreck Beach, Greece

By Dean and Laynni at Routinely Nomadic

This one may ring a bell for Instagram travel fans as it has become one of the biggest photographic attractions in Greece over the past few years. Spectacular Shipwreck Beach on the beautiful island of Zakynthos (also called Zante) is a mesmerizing place where a small crescent of powdery white sand fronted by luminescent blue water is surrounded by dramatic cliffs on three sides.

Then, as if that wasn’t enough, the beach also happens to feature the huge, rusting hulk of a smuggler ship that ran aground back in 1980. Also known by its Greek name, Paralia Navagio, this very unique beach is now the most popular of the many outstanding Zakynthos photo spots. It is also one of the best beaches to visit in Europe in September.

The atmosphere is festive, the scenery amazing and the huge wreck endlessly fascinating. Amateur photographers, however, might argue that Shipwreck Beach is even more interesting from the official viewpoint located on the cliff edge high above.

There are no villages or towns close to Shipwreck Beach but the viewpoint can be reached by car or occasional bus on a relatively good road from Zakynthos Town. Access to the metal platform is free, your only payment the amount of time you have to wait in the occasionally long lineup for a very brief moment to enjoy the view.

After you’ve waited for your turn to get the iconic photo, it is worth stopping at the nearby Monastery of Agios Giorgios Krimnon. This classic old monastery has a lovely church built inside as well as a panoramic viewpoint of its own just 100 metres away.

Beach Facilities

There are no facilities – no sunbeds, no umbrellas, no beach bar, not even a toilet.

Weather

Average temperatures in Shipwreck Beach in September range from 63°F – 82°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Only accessible by sea, Shipwreck Beach is usually visited as part of a group trip. The 20-minute journey from Agios Nikolaos includes an hour of free time to spend on the beach. As you’d expect, it can get very busy at peak times (it is worst between 10:30 am and noon), which is why visiting in September is a great idea. You should avoid the summer crowds.

Praia da Mainha, Portugal (Photo courtesy of Sarah from CosmopoliClan)

Praia da Marinha, Portugal

By Sarah from CosmopoliClan

Praia da Marinha is one of the most scenic beaches in Europe and one of the best beach destinations in September. It’s tucked halfway between Portimao and Albufeira along the Algarve coastline in Southern Portugal. This beach is a favorite among locals and visitors alike thanks to its soft golden sand, the impressive rock formations and crystal-clear waters.

Towering limestone cliffs shelter Praia da Marinha from the wind. A wooden staircase leads from the parking lot to the beach. Depending on the tide, you may need to get your feet wet in order to reach the westernmost part of Praia da Marinha. This is known to be an excellent snorkelling spot.

An alternative way to enjoy this picturesque beach is by taking a kayak or SUP tour along the stunning coastline. Boat tours are available too and allow a visit to the stunning local sea caves in the area, the Benagil cave being the most popular one.

Another highlight is the spectacular Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, a coastal hiking trail which starts right on top of the cliff above Praia da Marinha and leads all the way to Praia do Vale de Centeanes.

Beach Facilities

There are no chairs to rent but there is a snack restaurant in the eastern corner and bathrooms are available too.

Weather

Average high temperatures in Albufeira in September range from 64°F – 79°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

The Praia da Marinha parking lot is easily accessible by car and you should have no problem finding a parking spot and a place of your own on the beach in September. There’s also a bus to this beach from Lagoa but it doesn’t run very frequently.

Best Place To Stay

Sarah says, “One option is to stay at a hotel within walking distance of Praia da Marinha, such as the Suites Alba Resort and Spa. Another amazing place to stay in Algarve that’s not too far from this beach is the Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort.”

Playa da Bil Bil, Spain (Photo courtesy of Cristina of My Little World of Travelling)

Playa da Bil Bil, Spain

By Cristina of My Little World of Travelling

Playa de Bil Bil is a beautiful sandy beach in Benalmadena, a town near Malaga, Spain. It is considered one of the best beaches in Costa del Sol, and is well-known for its stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea as well as its excellent facilities.

The beach is very family-friendly, and you can find different activities to do with kids, like having fun at Costa WaterPark (an inflatable floating play park located off the shore).

It is a busy beach during the summer months because of its excellent location, however, it does get much calmer in September as the days shorten a little bit and many locals and tourists return to work after their summer holidays. In addition, you will still get to enjoy warm sunny days. It is a great choice if looking for a September beach getaway in Europe.

If you are looking for something outside the beach, there are plenty of things to do in Benalmadena. Just a short walk from the beach is the Bil Bil Castle and Parque de la Paloma, a beautiful park with a lake.

Alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous, you can take a cable car ride up to the top of Monte Calamorro for some breathtaking views. At 2550 feet (780 meters), you get stunning vistas of the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and North Africa.

Beach Facilities

There are plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas to rent, as well as changing rooms and bathrooms. The beach is also conveniently located near public transportation, many restaurants and chiringuitos (beach bars), and small convenience stores.

Weather

Average temperatures in Malaga in September range from 66°F – 82°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

If you are based in Malaga, you can either drive to Benalmadena, which will take about 25 minutes, or take the Cercanías train from María Zambrano station.

Best Place To Stay

Cristina says, “For those looking for accommodation in Benalmadena, one of the best hotels near Playa Bil Bil is Vincci Selección Aleysa.”

Wells-next-the-Sea Beach, England (Photo courtesy of Anisa from Norfolk Local Guide)

Wells-next-the-Sea Beach, England

By Anisa from Norfolk Local Guide

Wells-next-the-Sea Beach on the North Norfolk coast in England is one of the biggest beaches you will ever come across. The back of the beach is lined with its iconic beach huts elevated from the sand on stilts. At low tide, the sand seems to go on forever. The water from the North Sea is shallow and calm. It is a great beach destination in September in Europe.

You need to be careful though, because when the tide comes in, it does so quickly and can be dangerous. When you hear the siren, you need to make sure you cross to the near side of the channel immediately.

Wells Beach is in the Holkham National Nature Reserve. One of the best things to do is wildlife watch (especially birds). Given the size of the beach, it’s also popular spot for walking. People love to bring their dogs, but there is a portion of the beach where they are not allowed.

Just a few miles away, you can visit Holkham Hall, the home of the Earl of Leicester and his family. It is surrounded by beautiful parkland with several marked paths worth exploring. On select days, you can tour the house. There is also an exhibit where you can learn more about Holkham’s history.

Beach Facilities

The beach does have it’s own pay and display car park but it does fill up. You will also find toilets and a cafe. If you are looking for pubs, shops, or more parking and restaurants, the town of Wells-next-the-Sea is about a mile away. There is a bus that connects the two.

Weather

Average temperatures in Wells-next-the-Sea in September range from 53°F – 63°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Wells-next-the-Sea doesn’t have a train station but it is on the Coasthopper bus line. From Norwich, you could take the train to Sheringham and switch to the Coasthopper bus, but this will take twice as long as driving.

Best Place To Stay

Anisa says, “If you want to stay in the area, The Globe Inn Wells has been recently refurbished and accredited with four stars. The closest city is Norwich which is about an hour drive away.”

best beach vacation in Europe in September
Spaggia di Vieste, Italy (Photo courtesy of Cris from LooknWalk)

Spaggia di Vieste, Italy

By Cris from LooknWalk

In the province of Foggia, in Italy’s Apulia region, you can find Vieste, a marine resort also known as the “Perl of the Gargano”. Spiaggia di Vieste Beach is one of the longest sandy beaches on the Adriatic Coast and an ideal European beach vacation destination in September.

Spiaggia di Vieste offers superb views of Vieste Old Town and the mountains of Gargano. The entire area is gorgeous, with grottoes, rocks, golden sandy beaches, olive groves, pine and oak woods, allowing for a variety of activities.

When the weather gets too hot, just put on your walking shoes and follow one of the many paths in the forest. And when you feel like soaking up the sun, rent a chair and sip a drink.

Particularly during high season – July and August – the beach gets extremely busy. If you are looking for less crowds with fantastic weather, September is the best time to go. The crowds are much thinner, and after mid-September, you’ll pretty much have the beach to yourself.

Because of its geographic position, Vieste is a great place to do water sports, such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, or surfing.

If you prefer to explore the water on a boat, you might enjoy a tour of the marine grottoes. Just go to the port to book directly with one of the operators, or ask your hotel to book one for you.

Locals proudly talk about Lungomare Vieste (the promenade) which runs parallel to Spiaggia di Vieste. The most important landmark in Vieste is Pizzomunno and is located at one end of the promenade. It’s a stunning sea stack standing at 87 feet (26.6 meters) high with a pretty interesting legend.

If you want to explore more than just the resort area, head to the Old Town, also known as the ancient village of Vieste. Overlooking the beaches and perched on the sides of a hill, it is a gorgeous maze of whitewashed houses, narrow lanes, and piazzas.

Beach Facilities

Lounge chairs are normally included in the hotel rates during the season, but if you aren’t staying in the area, make sure to ask at the beach entrances. There’s a lifeguard, too, and many bars and places to eat.

Weather

Average temperatures in Vieste in September range from 70°F – 78°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Spiaggia di Vieste is part of Gargano National Park, just 2.5 hours by car from Bari. If you don’t drive, you can either take the train to Foggia and then hop on a bus or just take the bus directly from Bari.

If you stay in the resort area, you’ll be just a few steps away from it.

Best Place To Stay

Cris says, “There are a lot of places to stay in the area. Many resorts offer both camping facilities and high-end apartments and rooms. But in September, you’ll likely find quite a lot of special offers as the season is drawing to an end. Grand Hotel Ripa is a 4-star accommodation with a private beach, located along the promenade. All rooms have air conditioning, TV, and private bathroom.”

If you are open to considering other places around the world, here are some fantastic destinations that would be great to visit in September:

best beach getaway in September in Europe
Reynisfjara, Iceland (Photo courtesy of Jessica from The Uprooted Traveler)

Reynisfjara Beach, Iceland

By Jessica from The Uprooted Traveler

Reynisfjara is the most iconic black sand beach in Iceland, located along this island country’s southern coast, just east of the town of Vik. Reynisfjara is known for its dramatic appearance, with jet black sand, moss-covered sea stacks jutting out of the Atlantic Ocean, and cliffs of hexagonal columnar basalt.

These stunning features are all thanks to the volcanic activity in the area. The sand, sea stacks, and columnar basalt are all by-products of lava freely flowing from the nearby Katla Volcano and then, being rapidly cooled by the chilly Atlantic waters.

With blustery winds and dangerous waves, you definitely don’t come to this beach to sunbathe or swim. Rather, its main draw is its jaw dropping scenery. If you are looking for one of the best beach destinations in September in Europe for dramatic and unusual beauty, then this should be at the top of your list.

Reynisfjara is located two and a half hours southeast of Reykjavik and is a frequent road trip stop for visitors driving along the Ring Road that encircles Iceland. It’s also, however, quite common for travelers to stop here on a bus tour, so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, it’s best to show up before 9:30 AM or after 4 PM, when the tour buses have left for the day.

The farther east you walk away from the parking lot, the less and less crowds you’ll encounter. If you’re really looking to enjoy the beach at its prime, come at sunset. You should have the beach largely to yourself and it looks spectacular in the remaining golden light of the day.

While the beach’s famed puffins are usually gone by September, it’s still one of the best places to birdwatch, with Arctic terns, fulmars, seagulls and guillemots frequently spotted along its shores.

September is the start of Northern Lights season, thanks to the nights that grow longer and darker by the day. Because of the limited light pollution from Vik, Reynisfjara can be an incredible place to see the Aurora Borealis dancing overhead.

While you’re at Reynisfjara, it’s absolutely worth exploring the adorable neighboring town of Vik, just an easy 10 minute drive away. The town has plenty of charming businesses to peruse, like Skool Beans, a micro roaster serving up exquisite coffee out of a converted school bus.

Beach Facilities

You won’t find many facilities here other than a free parking lot and nearby, a restaurant and public restrooms (for a fee). If you need more substantive provisions, Vik offers a grocery store and several restaurants less than 3 miles (5 km) away.

Weather

Average temperatures in Vik in September range from 42°F – 51°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Rent an Iceland campervan rental or car, and drive from Vik, or take one of the daily bus tours.

Best Place To Stay

Jessica says, “You’ll also find some nice accommodations in town, like Hotel Vik i Myrdal, a hotel that perfectly marries the hygge vibes of Nordic culture with sleek, modern design.”

most beautiful beaches to visit in Europe in fall
Ksamil, Albania (Photo courtesy of Ann from The Road Is Life)

Ksamil Beach, Albania

By Ann from The Road Is Life

The affordability and beauty of Albania has made it an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years. The Albanian Riviera in particular has become a busy hot spot for people looking to escape the cold during the fall months. The weather in this part of Albania is still sunny and warm well into September.

Located on Albania’s southern coast, Ksamil Beach is one of the best beaches in the region featuring vibrant turquoise water and white sand.

Some of the best activities on offer besides soaking up the sun are paddle-boarding, kayaking and snorkelling.

If you have any extra time to spare, you could also consider taking a day trip to the nearby town of Gjirokaster. This beautiful medieval town features a hilltop fortress that looks out over the town and surrounding countryside.

There is also an archaeological site only 10 minutes from Ksamil where you will find some impressive Greek and Roman ruins and the remains of a medieval city. The ruins of Butrint are incredibly well preserved and shouldn’t be missed.

Ksamil is an excellent addition to your road trip through Albania. However, it is also a great choice as a European beach destination in September on its own.

Beach Facilities

There is an endless choice of beachfront restaurants and bars offering beach chairs to be rented for the day. You can eat fresh seafood and order cocktails straight to your beach chair.

Weather

Average temperatures in Ksamil in September range from 61°F – 83°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

The quickest way to reach Ksamil is by flying into Corfu, Greece and then taking a 1 hour ferry to the nearby town of Saranda. From there it’s only a short 30 minute drive to reach Ksamil.

Best Place To Stay

Ann says, “You can find plenty of great accommodation options within walking distance from the beach. One of the best hotels is the Delight Hotel and features a pool, restaurant and bar.”

best beaches to spend time in September in Europe
Cala Ferrera, Spain (Photo courtesy of Kylie from Between England and Iowa)

Cala Ferrera Beach, Spain

By Kylie from Between England and Iowa

One of the best beaches to visit in September in Europe is Cala Ferrera in Mallorca, Spain. Cala Ferrera Beach is in the town of Cala d’Or, approximately 1 hour from the capital, Palma.

There are 5 beaches in Cala d’Or altogether. These ‘calas’ are small bays or coves that have clear turquoise waters.

Due to the nature of the calas, Cala Ferrera Beach is long and thin, sandwiched between a rocky cove. The beach itself, however, has soft, white sand. There is an area of the sea that is sectioned off for swimming. It is calm with shallow waters.

Cala Ferrera is located on the Mediterranean Sea. Accordingly, you may occasionally see jellyfish. However, if they are present in one cala, it’s likely the next cala will be clear.

A beach vendor at Cala Ferrera rents stand up paddle boards and pedal boat (with slides). Otherwise, snorkelling is popular. The Starfish glass bottom catamaran visits the bay several times a day, offering various boat trips and tours.

Alternatively, there are plenty of things to do in Cala d’Or, from shopping, live entertainment, cocktail bars and restaurants. There’s also a land train which heads towards the marina.

Beach Facilities

Cala Ferrera Beach has sun loungers, umbrellas and small safes to rent. At the top end of the beach, there are toilet facilities with showers. A lifeguard is on duty during peak season.

A beach bar sells food and drinks (hot, cold and alcoholic), but there are plenty of restaurants and grocery stores just a short walk in Cala d’Or.

Cala Ferrera Beach does fill up quite quickly during peak season, so it’s best to get there early if you want to hire a sun lounger, otherwise there is plenty of space to lay down on towels. September is just after peak season and still busy, so you should still get there reasonably early to guarantee a lounger.

Weather

Average temperatures in Cala Ferrera in September range from 63°F – 81°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Cala Ferrera beach can be reached via taxi or public bus if you don’t have a car.

Best Place To Stay

Kylie says, “Hotel Cala Ferrera is a reasonably priced hotel that looks right over Cala Ferrera Beach. There’s a walk along the rocky cove to the beach, which has spots to jump into the deeper areas of the sea with ladders to get back out again.”

best European beach getaway in summer
Ponchettes Beach, France (Photo courtesy of Kristin from Global Travel Escapades)

Ponchettes Beach, France

By Kristin from Global Travel Escapades

One city that is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe is Nice, France. Nice is part of the Alpes-Maritimes department in the South of France, and while the city itself is quite flat, the surrounding region is composed of the French Alps. So you have stunning views no matter where you are in the city.

While all the beaches in Nice are fantastic, if you have a short amount of time in Nice, the best beach to visit in September is Ponchettes Beach. It offers beachgoers fabulous views of the hillside, dotted with colorful houses and buildings.

That said, it’s worth noting that the beach is filled with lots of rocks and pebbles. Accordingly, you will want to bring some flip-flops as well as a thick mat if you want to lie down and soak up the sun.

You can’t visit this gorgeous beach without swimming in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Just remember to bring water shoes so you don’t stub your toe.

When you’re ready for a change of scenery, head to Place Garibaldi. The square is filled with striking architecture and bright yellow buildings.

Beach Facilities

There are clean bathroom facilities located nearby, perfect for changing into your bathing suit. When you are hungry, you can easily walk to Nice’s Old Town for food.

Weather

Average temperatures in Nice in September range from 63°F – 76°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

It’s centrally located in Nice near the historic Old Town.

Best Place To Stay

Kristin says, “Anyone who is dreaming of visiting the lovely city of Nice should consider staying at Westminster Hotel & Spa. It is centrally located and you’ll be able to enjoy incredible views of the coast right from the comfort of your room.”

best beaches in Europe in September
Paros, Greece (Photo courtesy of Carine from We Did It Our Way)

Paros, Greece

By Carine from We Did It Our Way

Located within the Cyclade of the Aegean Sea, Paros is a beautiful island to visit with many beaches to discover. And the best time to go is during the shoulder season, in mid to late September, when the crowds have left, and prices are more affordable.

On Paros, there are a few beaches to discover. The most conveniently-located one is Piperi beach. It’s right by Naoussa town’s best restaurants and bars. It’s easy to get to, and it’s the perfect place to hang out on a sunny day and to catch a sunset in the evening.

Piperi beach features clear blue waters and a mix of small pebbles and sand, which make it perfect for lounging around on your towel. There are a few parasols for rent, as well as a restaurant and a hotel or two on the beach. There is a little forest in the back, where you can hang out in the shade.

From Naoussa, you can hop on a short ferry that will take you across the bay to Kolympḗthres beach. This beach has funky rock formations, crystal clear water and sandy shores. But the sand is limited and covered with parasols that cost between 20-25 euros. There’s also not much natural shade available and it does tend to get crowded. We would recommend going there in the morning, when it’s the least crowded.

Other beaches on the island are Monastiri beach, the most popular one on the island. It’s known for its crystal clear waters and all the things to do around it. You can also go to Santa Maria beach if you love to party. There are parasols and lounge chairs that line the beachfront with music blaring from the speakers of nearby bars.

Molos beach is located on the east coast of Paros, about 10 km south of Naoussa. It’s the least touristic beach on Paros and the least developed. Make sure to bring food and drinks because there’s nothing around!

Golden Beach is a sandy beach that is located in the southeast of Paros. It’s lined with bars, restaurants and lounge chairs for rent. It gets windy here, so it’s the perfect beach for windsurfers and kite-surfers.

And finally, Marcello beach is located 10 minutes off the bay from Parikia. Most visitors say that it’s the best beach on the island, with white sand, pool-like waters and full waiter service. Best of all, it’s not that crowded.

Other than the beaches on Paros, you can check out the old town of Lefkes, the Venetian Castle of Naoussa, or the many museums on the island. If you love to party, Parikia has some great bars and clubs to check out.

Weather

Average temperatures in Paros in September range from 84°F – 72°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

If you’re staying in Naoussa, you can either rent a car or take a bus to get around the island. The bus system is quite developed, so it’s a great eco-friendly way to get to your destination.

Best Place To Stay

Carine says, “We recommend staying in Naoussa to be close to all the bars, restaurants and the beaches.”

best beach destinations in Europe for a late summer vacation
Porto Moniz, Portugal (Photo courtesy of Alyssa at An Apple a Plane)

Porto Moniz, Portugal (Madeira)

By Alyssa at An Apple a Plane

Porto Moniz is located on Portugal’s beautiful island, Madeira, which sits to the west of mainland Portugal. It is home to beaches unlike any other, perhaps some of the most unique in the world.

Visitors stay for the calm ambiance, beautiful views, colorful hill-side homes, and relaxing beach vacation. But the main draw? Volcanic pools! Turquoise waters of the Atlantic flow through hardened volcanic lava to form the infamous volcanic pools of Madeira.

There are two volcanic pools to visit, the natural pools (for free), or the converted natural pools at the pool complex. When visiting the natural pools, take caution for sharp edges as this is entirely naturally created.

In addition to its infamous volcanic pools, you can also enjoy walking along the coast and the stunning Miradouro de Santa Viewpoint. Enjoy some delicious seafood at seaside restaurants. And of course, make sure you leave time to visit Church of Santa Maria Madalena built in the 17th century.

Porto Moniz offers some of the best beaches in Europe in late summer or early fall, incredible viewpoints, a place of relaxation and rest, and a scenic route for your morning walk. In other words, it offers everything for the best European beach holiday.

Beach Facilities

The natural pools offer a restaurant at the top. The pool complex provides comforts of a traditional beach with access to changing rooms, bathrooms, beach chairs, first aid, umbrellas, a children’s pool, and access for people with disabilities.

Weather

Average temperatures in Porto Moniz in September range from 67°F – 75°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Rent a car from the airport in Funchal upon arrival to the island. Porto Moniz is an hour’s drive.

Best Place To Stay

Alyssa says, “Consider staying at highly rated Aqua Natura Bay in Porto Moniz for a seaside room in a 4 star hotel. “

best wild beach destination in Europe in fall
Fetovaia Beach, Italy (Photo courtesy of Annalisa from Travel Connect Experience)

Fetovaia Beach, Italy

By Annalisa from Travel Connect Experience

One of the most popular destinations to visit in summer in Italy is Elba Island. It is located about 18 miles (30 kilometers) off the Tuscan coast, opposite the port city of Piombino. The island is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and features plenty of forests and picturesque villages.

From mid-May until the first week of September, vacationers from Tuscany and other regions of Italy migrate in flocks to the island, which boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy. There are about 100 beaches bathed by crystal clear sea on the island, each with its own characteristics, easily accessible by car or bus.

Summer tourism is so massive that many devotees forgo visiting in the high-season months. Those who are familiar with Elba Island know that September is the best time to visit, especially after schools have started.

In September, the heat is bearable, the islanders are more relaxed and friendly, and you finally find the beaches almost empty.

The most popular beach on Elba Island is Fetovaia Beach, in the southwestern part of the island. September is the only summer month when you will find a spot on Fetovaia’s golden sands.

The beach is enclosed in a cove bordered by a pine forest where you can seek shade or have a picnic. The waters that wash the beach are clear and perfect for snorkeling.

In nearby Chiessi, you can enjoy the most beautiful and longest sunset on Elba Island.

Beach Facilities

There are two Beach clubs on the beach. You can use the showers, sunbeds and umbrellas (for a fee), and bathrooms, but more than half the beach is free.

The cafeterias at the beach clubs prepare salads and dishes with the freshest fish at affordable prices. In nearby Pomonte, you will find grocery stores and an excellent Tuscan cuisine restaurant, Sophie.

Weather

Average temperatures in Fetovaia Beach in September range from 63°F – 75°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

You can reach the beach by bus 116 from Portoferraio, the island’s main town where ferries arrive from Piombino in Tuscany.

If you are traveling by car or even better, by moped, find parking on the road leading to the beach or pay for parking in the lots at the beach entrance.

best wild beaches in Europe in September
Inch Beach, Ireland (Photo courtesy of Amber of Amber Everywhere)

Inch Beach, Ireland

By Amber of Amber Everywhere

Inch Beach, or Inch Strand, is a sandy beach popular with surfers. The beach is near Dingle Town along the southern coastline of Ireland in County Kerry. This long stretch of beach is surrounded by mountains and hills on all sides, and just behind the sand you’ll find beautiful natural bluffs. It is the perfect beach destination for a late summer getaway in Europe.

If you have a car, you actually can drive out onto the beach to watch the surfers from the front seat – especially handy in inclement weather. Otherwise, you can park in the nearby lot for free and walk onto the beach.

It’ll be up to you to decide if you want to brave the Atlantic Ocean in September, but there will almost certainly be locals enjoying a dip even late into the month. You can usually rent wetsuits (such as a 5mm wetsuit for cool water) and surfboards directly on the beach, in case you decide when you arrive that you’re ready to give it a try.

If you’re less interested in going for a swim, Inch Beach is perfect for a run along the sand because it’s very flat and the sand is compact. There are also seashells all along the length of the beach, so you could download an identification app like Seek and learn about the local Dingle fauna.

If you make your way to Dingle, be sure to try a scoop of Murphy’s ice cream, a local creamery with inventive flavors like Irish gin and brown bread.

Weather

Average temperatures in Dingle in September range from 55°F – 61°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

The beach is an easy 25 minute drive from Dingle Town.

Best Place To Stay

Amber says, “Stay in the town of Dingle, or you can car camp nearby at Ventry Beach or in a farmer’s field (just be sure to ask permission first). If you do decide to camp, be sure to practice Leave No Trace principles and leave the place just as nice as you found it.”

Bolonia Beach, Spain

By Linn Haglund of Amused by Andalucia

When looking for spectacular beach vacations in September in Europe, you cannot miss out on the sweeping and sandy Bolonia beach in southern Spain. It is a long and wild sandy beach that offers a beautiful view to Africa across the ocean. You can enjoy scuba and snorkelling, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and of course, hours of swimming in the beautiful waters.

Bolonia Beach also has a large dune of desert sand from the Sahara which has been declared a Natural Monument. Walk all the way to the top of the dune for the best views of Bolonia Beach. Alternatively, go for a walk on the wild trails on the coast past the beach.

Behind the beach, you can also visit one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Andalucia, Baleo Claudia.

For those looking for activities away from the beach, there are many more things to do in Tarifa than water sports and sunbathing. The whitewashed village is jam-packed with vegan restaurants and sustainable clothing shops.

Kolitsani Beach, Greece

By Mary from Be Right Back By Mary

Kolitsani Beach is one of best beaches to visit on Ios Island and one of the most beautiful beaches to visit in Europe in fall.

Ios is a small island located about 30 minutes by ferry from Santorini. It is in the Aegean Sea and one of the most romantic Greek Islands to visit, especially in September.

The main town on the island is called Ios Chora and will remind you of famous towns like Oia or Thira in Santorini. Ios has tall mountains that provide incredible views of the Aegean Sea and beautiful turquoise waters that make it a paradise for romance.

Kolitsani Beach is one of the most beautiful and serene beaches on the island. The beach is enclaved at the bottom of the town and protected on each side by the mountain which makes it one of the best places for windy days.

The beach is made of thin and soft golden sand. The water is often extremely calm and even looks like a painting at times because of how calm it is. It is also very clear which is perfect if you like snorkelling or seeing around you while swimming.

Kolitsani Beach offers a very natural and authentic vibe. It gets shade at the end of the day from the surrounding cliffs but none during the day so you will need to bring an umbrella. If you prefer a nude beach, then Kolitsani is also clothing optional.

This beach, just like the island, gets really busy in the summer season from June to August with college students who like to party all day and night long. However, in September and October, Ios offers lovely summer temperatures and peace and quiet.

After the beach, take some time to stop by the town and get lost in the narrow white streets. Ios Chora is also great for dinner.

Beach Facilities

There are no beach facilities.

Weather

Average temperatures in Ios in September range from 68 °F – 79 °F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

It is located just a couple minutes from the town and you can both drive and walk to it. Once parked, there is a ten minute easy walk down to the beach.

Playa La Concha, Spain

By Cynthia & Alexander from Travel Your Memories

San Sebastián or ‘Donostia’ in Basque, is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. If you have one day in San Sebastian or more, visiting the beautiful beaches in the city is something you definitely need to do.

Playa La Concha and Playa Zurriola are two of the best beaches in San Sebastian. Not only are they located in stunning green bays in the middle of the city, but they also have special atmospheres.

Playa la Concha is the most popular and largest beach. This 1 mile (1.5 km) long sandy beach is stone-free and consists of radiant white sand. It is located in a bay where the water is wonderfully calm and is ideal for a day of swimming and sunbathing. In addition, Playa La Concha Beach borders the old city center and is easy to reach. It is has been declared one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe and one of the best beaches to visit in Europe in September.

The beach is also very popular with water sports enthusiasts. You can surf, sail, kayak or canoe. The beach is very clean so you can go into the sea with peace of mind.

In the summer, it can get crowded, but because of the size of the beach, you can usually find a place to lie down. In September, it is less busy so there is plenty of space to spread out.

If you want to do something other than sunbathing, you can also explore the historic center of San Sebastian where you will find many historic buildings and small shops along pretty cobblestone, windy and narrow streets.

Beach Facilities

Several changing rooms are available at Playa La Concha. Adjacent to the beach, you will find the boulevard which is perfect for a nice walk. You can also enjoy a snack and a drink in one of the many different restaurants and bars found across from the beach.

De Koog Beach, Netherlands

By Cosette from KarsTravels

Texel is an island in northern Netherlands and part of the Wadden islands which are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Texel is the largest island of the Wadden islands and has several beaches.

De Koog Beach (and all the other ones on Texel) is a sand beach, located on the North Sea, and is long and stretches out to both sides. On one end of the beach is the sea and on the other, are dunes.

On Texel, there are a few large towns, but no cities. The closest city is Den Helder on the mainland.

There are no lounge chairs available, so bring your own gear. Even when it’s warm and the sun is shining you will have enough space on the beach. Unlike the popular beaches of Zandvoort and Scheveningen, De Koog Beach is less easily reachable from the mainland so less busy.

Building a sandcastle or flying a kite is perfect in September, as it is not too hot, but also still not cold. Go surfing or swimming, depending if it’s a windy day or a beautiful sunny day. Always check which flags are flying to know if the sea is safe to swim in.

For other activities away from the beach, go for a bike ride around Texel. The island is flat and beautiful to explore in September. There are 87 miles (140 kilometers) of bike paths.

Beach Facilities

There are several beach clubs where you can have lunch, dinner or just something to drink. They usually have toilets available.

There are a few beach cabins rented out for the season where you can store your belongs. Paid parking is available just behind the dunes and there’s space for bikes as well. De Koog has a grocery store and lots of restaurants.

Weather

Average high temperatures in Texel in September range from 55°F – 63°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Den Helder is where the ferry departs to and from the island. It is 52 miles (83 kilometers) north of Amsterdam.

You can walk or bike from De Koog to the beach. It’s just one dune that you have to cross to reach it. There are no trains on the island, but bus lines connect the towns and villages. There is a bus stop at De Koog.

Best Place To Stay

Cosette says, “Appartementencomplex Bosch en Zee has great apartments with your own kitchen.”

One of the best beaches to visit in Europe in September would be Fisherman’s Beach. This beautiful beach is in the city of Albufeira on the Algarve in Portugal, more specifically it is in the region of Faro. This is one of the most popular places to visit in all of Portugal.

Fisherman’s Beach is also known as Praia dos Pescadores and is a stunning sandy beach located at the end of the old town. There are plenty of different access points to reach the sand including impressive escalators and elevators if you wish to avoid walking down the steep Portuguese hills.

The beach does get busy in the summer with families, fishermen, and even surfers. So try and come early in the morning to pick your favorite spot. However, the beach is very big and you should always be able to find a place for the day. If you walk all the way down the beach to the very end you will be rewarded with beautiful sea stacks and caves that you can explore.

If you are visiting this beautiful beach in Europe and feeling adventurous, you could rent yourself a surf or paddle board and explore the Atlantic Ocean. There are stands nearby ready and waiting for you to come and talk to them.

Beach Facilities

There are plenty of different places to rent chairs near the shore. There is a big bathroom facility in the middle of the beach, changing rooms scattered along, and many different restaurants from which to choose.

Playa de Maspalomas is located in the Maspalomas resort town in the southern part of Gran Canaria, Spain. The beach is located between the Maspalomas lighthouse and the famous sand dunes. Here in the Canary Islands, you can swim in the Atlantic Ocean the entire year.

Maspalomas Beach is 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) long and covered with fine golden sand. It’s almost always sunny in Maspalomas. The sand can get quite hot so remember to use sunscreen and flip-flops to protect your skin and feet.

When you are not swimming and sunbathing at Maspalomas, you should check out the iconic lighthouse. In addition, do not miss strolling through the Maspalomas dunes.

The dunes actually look like a desert and are a unique landscape on the volcanic island. Visiting Maspalomas dunes is one of the best things you can do in Gran Canaria. Just be sure to keep on the marked trails to preserve the dunes from erosion.

Golden Bay Beach, Malta

By Linn Haglund of Brainy Backpackers

One of the most beautiful beaches in Europe is Golden Bay in Northwest Malta. The golden sand beach is absolutely stunning and a fantastic beach getaway in Europe in autumn. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, you can paddleboard and kayak.

In September, hiking is a very popular activity on Malta. During the summer months, it is too hot to really enjoy this activity. There are lots of trails that crisscross the island and ultimately reach Golden Bay Beach. Consider taking Xemxija Heritage Trail from the east. It should take about an hour and the views are beautiful.

One of the best hikes in Malta is from Popeye Village to Golden Bay. Popeye Village was originally built as a small village for the 1980 movie Popeye. Today, it has been converted into a popular theme park.

It takes you across jaw-dropping cliffs with spectacular views. Ultimately, you end your walk with one of the best views of Golden Bay Beach. You will gaze at the deep blue water and you won’t be able to resist going for a swim.

Not far from Golden Bay, you can visit the charming town of Mellieha with its spectacular church, Our Lady of the Grotto, where it is believed that miracles come true.

Beach Facilities

There is a large parking space near the beach which is usually not as busy in September. You can rent sun beds and umbrellas. In addition, until the 15th of September, you also have the security of a lifeguard as well as dedicated swimming areas. There are strong currents so make sure you stay in the swimming areas inside the bay.

There is also a good restaurant where you can have lunch or just relax with a coffee overlooking the beach. In addition, there are lots of small stalls selling drinks and snacks.

Average temperatures in Malta in September range from 70°F – 81°F.

Golden Bay Beach is easily accessed by car and a one hour bus trip from Valletta, Sliema, or St. Julian’s.

best wild beach destination in Europe in summer
Favignana Beach, Italy (Photo courtesy of Clotilde from A Princess Travelling With Twins)

Favignana, Italy

By Clotilde from A Princess Travelling With Twins

Favignana is a small island west of the Sicilian coast. It is part of the small archipelago of Aegadian islands.

September is a perfect month to visit this secret European beach destination. The island is small in size and although it is little known outside the Italian circuit, in the months of July and August, it is packed with tourists.

The people do not detract from the beauty of the place, but the possibility of enjoying the beaches in peace when the sea is still warm and the weather wonderful makes September one of the best times to go.

It is difficult to go to Favignana and visit only one beach, as these are small coves that are all very different from each other. Even those who visit Favignana on a day trip can easily rent a bicycle (including electric options), make a complete tour of the island, and stop at several of the beaches. The island is mostly flat so you can get around very well on a bicycle, but scooters and cars are also available for hire.

The beaches of Favignana are wildly beautiful, although there are a couple of equipped sites, the best of which is Lido Burrone with umbrellas and sunbeds, the other beaches are pristine and in some cases require an extra effort to reach them. Cala Rossa and Grotta del Bue Marino are examples of this. To get there you need a bit of forethought and possibly shoes that do not slip on the rocks.

A good compromise are Cala Azzurra and Cala Preveto beaches. They are breathtakingly beautiful beaches that offer much easier access despite a few stones and rocks to navigate.

When you are tired of the beaches of Favignana, there is no shortage of things to do. You can take a hydrofoil to explore Marettimo or Levanzo, other islands nearby. In addition, you can spend a couple of hours exploring the sights of the Florio complex, the last tuna factory that was active in Italy, or discover the history of the island’s quarries through a visit to the Garden of the Impossible.

Weather

Average temperatures in Favignana in September range from 71°F – 81°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Favignana is easily accessible from Trapani by boat. Fast hydrofoils will reach the island in about 30-40 minutes.

Best Place To Stay

Clotilde says, “If you stay on the island for a few days, you can choose one of the many accommodations in the village. Even better, you can stay in an apartment at the Nido del Pellegrino, a beautiful small residence with spectacular views just outside it.”

best beaches to visit in September in Europe
El Palmar Beach, Spain (Photo courtesy of Joanna from The World In My Pocket)

El Palmar Beach, Spain

By Joanna from The World In My Pocket

El Palmar is a beautiful wild beach in the South of Spain, on the Costa de la Luz. The nearest city to it is Cadiz. El Palmar is considered one of the most beautiful beaches near Cadiz because it is undeveloped and a perfect place to learn how to surf.

The beach in El Palmar is wide, with soft sand and a gentle tide from the Atlantic Ocean. As you get into the water, the bottom is still sandy, without any rocks, just a few shells here and there. In September, the waves are still quite small, with little wind, which makes it a great place for beginner surfers.

As September comes, the beach gets less crowded compared to the summer months when it is very popular with holidaymakers.

In addition to surfing, you can also swim in the water. In September, the beach is divided between swimming spots and surfing spots.

Other pretty white villages to explore nearby are Vejer de la Frontera and Zahara de los Atunes. Tarifa is not far either.

Beach Facilities

In summer, the beach in El Palmar has a lifeguard service and a few beach clubs. If the weather is still good (which it normally is in September), the lifeguard watch is extended up to October. This is when high season ends.

There are a few organized parking spaces in El Palmar, where you can park your campervan – a lot of people visiting El Palmar come by camper.

The village of El Palmar has a few bars and restaurants along the beach, as well as a couple of small supermarkets from where you can buy all your essentials. There is also a small market on the beach front for clothing and beach gear.

Weather

Average temperatures in Lagos in September range from 66°F – 80°F.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

The nearest airport to El Palmar Beach is in Jerez de la Frontera. However, more regular flights go to Sevilla, a 1 hour and 45 drive away.

The closest town to El Palmar is Conil de la Frontera, which you can reach by a nice walk along the beach or by car.

Last Word

Europe is filled with beautiful beaches that make for a great holiday destination in September. Whether you prefer wild natural beaches away from cities, towns and crowds, or you prefer to people watch and be in the center of the action, you will have lots from which to choose in Europe.
