Here are the best beaches to visit in September in Europe. They are found all over Europe in cities, towns, and stunning natural settings apart from civilization. Shipwreck Beach, Greece

This one may ring a bell for Instagram travel fans as it has become one of the biggest photographic attractions in Greece over the past few years. Spectacular Shipwreck Beach on the beautiful island of Zakynthos (also called Zante) is a mesmerizing place where a small crescent of powdery white sand fronted by luminescent blue water is surrounded by dramatic cliffs on three sides.

Then, as if that wasn’t enough, the beach also happens to feature the huge, rusting hulk of a smuggler ship that ran aground back in 1980. Also known by its Greek name, Paralia Navagio, this very unique beach is now the most popular of the many outstanding Zakynthos photo spots. It is also one of the best beaches to visit in Europe in September.

The atmosphere is festive, the scenery amazing and the huge wreck endlessly fascinating. Amateur photographers, however, might argue that Shipwreck Beach is even more interesting from the official viewpoint located on the cliff edge high above.

There are no villages or towns close to Shipwreck Beach but the viewpoint can be reached by car or occasional bus on a relatively good road from Zakynthos Town. Access to the metal platform is free, your only payment the amount of time you have to wait in the occasionally long lineup for a very brief moment to enjoy the view.

After you’ve waited for your turn to get the iconic photo, it is worth stopping at the nearby Monastery of Agios Giorgios Krimnon. This classic old monastery has a lovely church built inside as well as a panoramic viewpoint of its own just 100 metres away.

Best Way To Reach The Beach

Only accessible by sea, Shipwreck Beach is usually visited as part of a group trip. The 20-minute journey from Agios Nikolaos includes an hour of free time to spend on the beach. As you’d expect, it can get very busy at peak times (it is worst between 10:30 am and noon), which is why visiting in September is a great idea. You should avoid the summer crowds.

Praia da Marinha, Portugal

Praia da Marinha is one of the most scenic beaches in Europe and one of the best beach destinations in September. It’s tucked halfway between Portimao and Albufeira along the Algarve coastline in Southern Portugal. This beach is a favorite among locals and visitors alike thanks to its soft golden sand, the impressive rock formations and crystal-clear waters.

Towering limestone cliffs shelter Praia da Marinha from the wind. A wooden staircase leads from the parking lot to the beach. Depending on the tide, you may need to get your feet wet in order to reach the westernmost part of Praia da Marinha. This is known to be an excellent snorkelling spot. 

An alternative way to enjoy this picturesque beach is by taking a kayak or SUP tour along the stunning coastline. Boat tours are available too and allow a visit to the stunning local sea caves in the area, the Benagil cave being the most popular one.

Another highlight is the spectacular Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, a coastal hiking trail which starts right on top of the cliff above Praia da Marinha and leads all the way to Praia do Vale de Centeanes.

Playa de Bil Bil is a beautiful sandy beach in Benalmadena, a town near Malaga, Spain. It is considered one of the best beaches in Costa del Sol, and is well-known for its stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea as well as its excellent facilities.

The beach is very family-friendly, and you can find different activities to do with kids, like having fun at Costa WaterPark (an inflatable floating play park located off the shore).

It is a busy beach during the summer months because of its excellent location, however, it does get much calmer in September as the days shorten a little bit and many locals and tourists return to work after their summer holidays. In addition, you will still get to enjoy warm sunny days. It is a great choice if looking for a September beach getaway in Europe.

If you are looking for something outside the beach, there are plenty of things to do in Benalmadena. Just a short walk from the beach is the Bil Bil Castle and Parque de la Paloma, a beautiful park with a lake.

Alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous, you can take a cable car ride up to the top of Monte Calamorro for some breathtaking views. At 2550 feet (780 meters), you get stunning vistas of the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and North Africa.

Wells-next-the-Sea Beach, England

Wells-next-the-Sea Beach on the North Norfolk coast in England is one of the biggest beaches you will ever come across. The back of the beach is lined with its iconic beach huts elevated from the sand on stilts. At low tide, the sand seems to go on forever. The water from the North Sea is shallow and calm. It is a great beach destination in September in Europe.

You need to be careful though, because when the tide comes in, it does so quickly and can be dangerous. When you hear the siren, you need to make sure you cross to the near side of the channel immediately.

Wells Beach is in the Holkham National Nature Reserve. One of the best things to do is wildlife watch (especially birds). Given the size of the beach, it’s also popular spot for walking. People love to bring their dogs, but there is a portion of the beach where they are not allowed.

Just a few miles away, you can visit Holkham Hall, the home of the Earl of Leicester and his family. It is surrounded by beautiful parkland with several marked paths worth exploring. On select days, you can tour the house. There is also an exhibit where you can learn more about Holkham’s history.

Wells-next-the-Sea doesn’t have a train station but it is on the Coasthopper bus line. From Norwich, you could take the train to Sheringham and switch to the Coasthopper bus, but this will take twice as long as driving.

Spaggia di Vieste, Italy

In the province of Foggia, in Italy’s Apulia region, you can find Vieste, a marine resort also known as the “Perl of the Gargano”. Spiaggia di Vieste Beach is one of the longest sandy beaches on the Adriatic Coast and an ideal European beach vacation destination in September.

Spiaggia di Vieste offers superb views of Vieste Old Town and the mountains of Gargano. The entire area is gorgeous, with grottoes, rocks, golden sandy beaches, olive groves, pine and oak woods, allowing for a variety of activities.

When the weather gets too hot, just put on your walking shoes and follow one of the many paths in the forest. And when you feel like soaking up the sun, rent a chair and sip a drink.

Particularly during high season – July and August – the beach gets extremely busy. If you are looking for less crowds with fantastic weather, September is the best time to go. The crowds are much thinner, and after mid-September, you’ll pretty much have the beach to yourself.

Because of its geographic position, Vieste is a great place to do water sports, such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, or surfing.

If you prefer to explore the water on a boat, you might enjoy a tour of the marine grottoes. Just go to the port to book directly with one of the operators, or ask your hotel to book one for you.

Locals proudly talk about Lungomare Vieste (the promenade) which runs parallel to Spiaggia di Vieste. The most important landmark in Vieste is Pizzomunno and is located at one end of the promenade. It’s a stunning sea stack standing at 87 feet (26.6 meters) high with a pretty interesting legend.

If you want to explore more than just the resort area, head to the Old Town, also known as the ancient village of Vieste. Overlooking the beaches and perched on the sides of a hill, it is a gorgeous maze of whitewashed houses, narrow lanes, and piazzas.

Spiaggia di Vieste is part of Gargano National Park, just 2.5 hours by car from Bari. If you don’t drive, you can either take the train to Foggia and then hop on a bus or just take the bus directly from Bari.

Reynisfjara is the most iconic black sand beach in Iceland, located along this island country’s southern coast, just east of the town of Vik. Reynisfjara is known for its dramatic appearance, with jet black sand, moss-covered sea stacks jutting out of the Atlantic Ocean, and cliffs of hexagonal columnar basalt. 

These stunning features are all thanks to the volcanic activity in the area. The sand, sea stacks, and columnar basalt are all by-products of lava freely flowing from the nearby Katla Volcano and then, being rapidly cooled by the chilly Atlantic waters.

With blustery winds and dangerous waves, you definitely don’t come to this beach to sunbathe or swim. Rather, its main draw is its jaw dropping scenery. If you are looking for one of the best beach destinations in September in Europe for dramatic and unusual beauty, then this should be at the top of your list.

Reynisfjara is located two and a half hours southeast of Reykjavik and is a frequent road trip stop for visitors driving along the Ring Road that encircles Iceland. It’s also, however, quite common for travelers to stop here on a bus tour, so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, it’s best to show up before 9:30 AM or after 4 PM, when the tour buses have left for the day.

The farther east you walk away from the parking lot, the less and less crowds you’ll encounter. If you’re really looking to enjoy the beach at its prime, come at sunset. You should have the beach largely to yourself and it looks spectacular in the remaining golden light of the day. 

While the beach’s famed puffins are usually gone by September, it’s still one of the best places to birdwatch, with Arctic terns, fulmars, seagulls and guillemots frequently spotted along its shores.

September is the start of Northern Lights season, thanks to the nights that grow longer and darker by the day. Because of the limited light pollution from Vik, Reynisfjara can be an incredible place to see the Aurora Borealis dancing overhead.

While you’re at Reynisfjara, it’s absolutely worth exploring the adorable neighboring town of Vik, just an easy 10 minute drive away. The town has plenty of charming businesses to peruse, like Skool Beans, a micro roaster serving up exquisite coffee out of a converted school bus.

You won’t find many facilities here other than a free parking lot and nearby, a restaurant and public restrooms (for a fee). If you need more substantive provisions, Vik offers a grocery store and several restaurants less than 3 miles (5 km) away.

The affordability and beauty of Albania has made it an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years. The Albanian Riviera in particular has become a busy hot spot for people looking to escape the cold during the fall months. The weather in this part of Albania is still sunny and warm well into September.

Located on Albania’s southern coast, Ksamil Beach is one of the best beaches in the region featuring vibrant turquoise water and white sand.

Some of the best activities on offer besides soaking up the sun are paddle-boarding, kayaking and snorkelling.

If you have any extra time to spare, you could also consider taking a day trip to the nearby town of Gjirokaster. This beautiful medieval town features a hilltop fortress that looks out over the town and surrounding countryside.

There is also an archaeological site only 10 minutes from Ksamil where you will find some impressive Greek and Roman ruins and the remains of a medieval city. The ruins of Butrint are incredibly well preserved and shouldn’t be missed.

Ksamil is an excellent addition to your road trip through Albania. However, it is also a great choice as a European beach destination in September on its own.

The quickest way to reach Ksamil is by flying into Corfu, Greece and then taking a 1 hour ferry to the nearby town of Saranda. From there it’s only a short 30 minute drive to reach Ksamil.

Cala Ferrera Beach, Spain

One of the best beaches to visit in September in Europe is Cala Ferrera in Mallorca, Spain. Cala Ferrera Beach is in the town of Cala d’Or, approximately 1 hour from the capital, Palma.

There are 5 beaches in Cala d’Or altogether. These ‘calas’ are small bays or coves that have clear turquoise waters.

Due to the nature of the calas, Cala Ferrera Beach is long and thin, sandwiched between a rocky cove. The beach itself, however, has soft, white sand. There is an area of the sea that is sectioned off for swimming. It is calm with shallow waters.

Cala Ferrera is located on the Mediterranean Sea. Accordingly, you may occasionally see jellyfish. However, if they are present in one cala, it’s likely the next cala will be clear.

A beach vendor at Cala Ferrera rents stand up paddle boards and pedal boat (with slides). Otherwise, snorkelling is popular. The Starfish glass bottom catamaran visits the bay several times a day, offering various boat trips and tours.

Alternatively, there are plenty of things to do in Cala d’Or, from shopping, live entertainment, cocktail bars and restaurants. There’s also a land train which heads towards the marina.

Cala Ferrera Beach has sun loungers, umbrellas and small safes to rent. At the top end of the beach, there are toilet facilities with showers. A lifeguard is on duty during peak season.

A beach bar sells food and drinks (hot, cold and alcoholic), but there are plenty of restaurants and grocery stores just a short walk in Cala d’Or.

Cala Ferrera Beach does fill up quite quickly during peak season, so it’s best to get there early if you want to hire a sun lounger, otherwise there is plenty of space to lay down on towels. September is just after peak season and still busy, so you should still get there reasonably early to guarantee a lounger.

One city that is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe is Nice, France. Nice is part of the Alpes-Maritimes department in the South of France, and while the city itself is quite flat, the surrounding region is composed of the French Alps. So you have stunning views no matter where you are in the city.

While all the beaches in Nice are fantastic, if you have a short amount of time in Nice, the best beach to visit in September is Ponchettes Beach. It offers beachgoers fabulous views of the hillside, dotted with colorful houses and buildings.

That said, it’s worth noting that the beach is filled with lots of rocks and pebbles. Accordingly, you will want to bring some flip-flops as well as a thick mat if you want to lie down and soak up the sun.

You can’t visit this gorgeous beach without swimming in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Just remember to bring water shoes so you don’t stub your toe.

When you’re ready for a change of scenery, head to Place Garibaldi. The square is filled with striking architecture and bright yellow buildings.

Paros, Greece

Located within the Cyclade of the Aegean Sea, Paros is a beautiful island to visit with many beaches to discover. And the best time to go is during the shoulder season, in mid to late September, when the crowds have left, and prices are more affordable.

On Paros, there are a few beaches to discover. The most conveniently-located one is Piperi beach. It’s right by Naoussa town’s best restaurants and bars. It’s easy to get to, and it’s the perfect place to hang out on a sunny day and to catch a sunset in the evening.

Piperi beach features clear blue waters and a mix of small pebbles and sand, which make it perfect for lounging around on your towel. There are a few parasols for rent, as well as a restaurant and a hotel or two on the beach. There is a little forest in the back, where you can hang out in the shade. 

From Naoussa, you can hop on a short ferry that will take you across the bay to Kolympḗthres beach. This beach has funky rock formations, crystal clear water and sandy shores. But the sand is limited and covered with parasols that cost between 20-25 euros. There’s also not much natural shade available and it does tend to get crowded. We would recommend going there in the morning, when it’s the least crowded.

Other beaches on the island are Monastiri beach, the most popular one on the island. It’s known for its crystal clear waters and all the things to do around it. You can also go to Santa Maria beach if you love to party. There are parasols and lounge chairs that line the beachfront with music blaring from the speakers of nearby bars. 

Molos beach is located on the east coast of Paros, about 10 km south of Naoussa. It’s the least touristic beach on Paros and the least developed. Make sure to bring food and drinks because there’s nothing around! 

Golden Beach is a sandy beach that is located in the southeast of Paros. It’s lined with bars, restaurants and lounge chairs for rent. It gets windy here, so it’s the perfect beach for windsurfers and kite-surfers. 

And finally, Marcello beach is located 10 minutes off the bay from Parikia. Most visitors say that it’s the best beach on the island, with white sand, pool-like waters and full waiter service. Best of all, it’s not that crowded. 

Other than the beaches on Paros, you can check out the old town of Lefkes, the Venetian Castle of Naoussa, or the many museums on the island. If you love to party, Parikia has some great bars and clubs to check out.

Porto Moniz, Portugal (Madeira)

Porto Moniz is located on Portugal’s beautiful island, Madeira, which sits to the west of mainland Portugal. It is home to beaches unlike any other, perhaps some of the most unique in the world.

Visitors stay for the calm ambiance, beautiful views, colorful hill-side homes, and relaxing beach vacation. But the main draw? Volcanic pools! Turquoise waters of the Atlantic flow through hardened volcanic lava to form the infamous volcanic pools of Madeira.

One of the most popular destinations to visit in summer in Italy is Elba Island. It is located about 18 miles (30 kilometers) off the Tuscan coast, opposite the port city of Piombino. The island is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and features plenty of forests and picturesque villages.

From mid-May until the first week of September, vacationers from Tuscany and other regions of Italy migrate in flocks to the island, which boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy. There are about 100 beaches bathed by crystal clear sea on the island, each with its own characteristics, easily accessible by car or bus.

Summer tourism is so massive that many devotees forgo visiting in the high-season months. Those who are familiar with Elba Island know that September is the best time to visit, especially after schools have started.

In September, the heat is bearable, the islanders are more relaxed and friendly, and you finally find the beaches almost empty.

This long stretch of beach is surrounded by mountains and hills on all sides, and just behind the sand you’ll find beautiful natural bluffs. It is the perfect beach destination for a late summer getaway in Europe.

If you have a car, you actually can drive out onto the beach to watch the surfers from the front seat – especially handy in inclement weather. Otherwise, you can park in the nearby lot for free and walk onto the beach. 

It’ll be up to you to decide if you want to brave the Atlantic Ocean in September, but there will almost certainly be locals enjoying a dip even late into the month. You can usually rent wetsuits (such as a 5mm wetsuit for cool water) and surfboards directly on the beach, in case you decide when you arrive that you’re ready to give it a try.

Kolitsani Beach is one of the most beautiful and serene beaches on the island. The beach is enclaved at the bottom of the town and protected on each side by the mountain which makes it one of the best places for windy days.

The beach is made of thin and soft golden sand. The water is often extremely calm and even looks like a painting at times because of how calm it is. It is also very clear which is perfect if you like snorkelling or seeing around you while swimming. 

Kolitsani Beach offers a very natural and authentic vibe. It gets shade at the end of the day from the surrounding cliffs but none during the day so you will need to bring an umbrella. If you prefer a nude beach, then Kolitsani is also clothing optional.

De Koog Beach, Netherlands

Texel is an island in northern Netherlands and part of the Wadden islands which are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Texel is the largest island of the Wadden islands and has several beaches.

De Koog Beach (and all the other ones on Texel) is a sand beach, located on the North Sea, and is long and stretches out to both sides. On one end of the beach is the sea and on the other, are dunes.

On Texel, there are a few large towns, but no cities. The closest city is Den Helder on the mainland.

There are no lounge chairs available, so bring your own gear. Even when it’s warm and the sun is shining you will have enough space on the beach. Unlike the popular beaches of Zandvoort and Scheveningen, De Koog Beach is less easily reachable from the mainland so less busy.

Building a sandcastle or flying a kite is perfect in September, as it is not too hot, but also still not cold. Go surfing or swimming, depending if it’s a windy day or a beautiful sunny day. Always check which flags are flying to know if the sea is safe to swim in.

In September, hiking is a very popular activity on Malta. During the summer months, it is too hot to really enjoy this activity. There are lots of trails that crisscross the island and ultimately reach Golden Bay Beach. Consider taking Xemxija Heritage Trail from the east. It should take about an hour and the views are beautiful.

One of the best hikes in Malta is from Popeye Village to Golden Bay. Popeye Village was originally built as a small village for the 1980 movie Popeye. Today, it has been converted into a popular theme park.

It takes you across jaw-dropping cliffs with spectacular views. Ultimately, you end your walk with one of the best views of Golden Bay Beach. You will gaze at the deep blue water and you won’t be able to resist going for a swim.

Not far from Golden Bay, you can visit the charming town of Mellieha with its spectacular church, Our Lady of the Grotto, where it is believed that miracles come true.

Favignana, Italy

Favignana is a small island west of the Sicilian coast. It is part of the small archipelago of Aegadian islands.

September is a perfect month to visit this secret European beach destination. The island is small in size and although it is little known outside the Italian circuit, in the months of July and August, it is packed with tourists.

The people do not detract from the beauty of the place, but the possibility of enjoying the beaches in peace when the sea is still warm and the weather wonderful makes September one of the best times to go.

It is difficult to go to Favignana and visit only one beach, as these are small coves that are all very different from each other. Even those who visit Favignana on a day trip can easily rent a bicycle (including electric options), make a complete tour of the island, and stop at several of the beaches. The island is mostly flat so you can get around very well on a bicycle, but scooters and cars are also available for hire.

The beaches of Favignana are wildly beautiful, although there are a couple of equipped sites, the best of which is Lido Burrone with umbrellas and sunbeds, the other beaches are pristine and in some cases require an extra effort to reach them. Cala Rossa and Grotta del Bue Marino are examples of this. To get there you need a bit of forethought and possibly shoes that do not slip on the rocks.

A good compromise are Cala Azzurra and Cala Preveto beaches. They are breathtakingly beautiful beaches that offer much easier access despite a few stones and rocks to navigate.

When you are tired of the beaches of Favignana, there is no shortage of things to do. You can take a hydrofoil to explore Marettimo or Levanzo, other islands nearby. In addition, you can spend a couple of hours exploring the sights of the Florio complex, the last tuna factory that was active in Italy, or discover the history of the island’s quarries through a visit to the Garden of the Impossible.

The beach in El Palmar is wide, with soft sand and a gentle tide from the Atlantic Ocean. As you get into the water, the bottom is still sandy, without any rocks, just a few shells here and there. In September, the waves are still quite small, with little wind, which makes it a great place for beginner surfers.

As September comes, the beach gets less crowded compared to the summer months when it is very popular with holidaymakers.
