Best European Holidays In Fall
Here are 24 of the best fall vacation destinations in Europe. They include beautiful warm beaches, exciting cities, charming small towns, and spectacular mountain settings.
Below, I include the best things to do in each spot, in addition to the expected weather. How best to reach the destination is set out as well as recommended accommodation.
Taormina, Italy (Sicily)
One of the best fall getaways in Europe is the charming coastal town of Taormina, Sicily.
In addition to it being the setting of the second season of The White Lotus, this inviting town has long been a favorite town for European travelers due to its combination of culture and natural beauty.
One thing to include on your Taormina itinerary is a visit to the area’s beaches, particularly the beach of Isola Bella. This small island is accessible via a tiny sand bar at low tides, making it a great place to spend the day with views of the island towering above you.
You should also dedicate time to visiting the sights around Taormina, including the well-preserved and beautiful Teatro Antico di Taormina, which has epic views of Mt. Etna in the distance. This historic site is one of the best Greek ruins in Sicily.
Other important sights in Taormina include Villa Comunale (a lovely park), the city’s cathedral (Duomo di Taormina), and Chiesa Madonna della Rocca (a church in a rock wall!).
Finally, you should definitely save time for a day trip to Mt. Etna, either to go on a hiking excursion or to enjoy a food or wine tasting in the area around Etna.
Fall is perfect for beach-going in Taormina, since the weather is sunny and the sea temperature is still warm as well. In addition, there are fewer crowds compared to the busy summer, when the area is packed.

Weather
The average high temperatures in fall in Taormina ranges from 82° F in September, to 75° F in October, and 67° F in November.
The weather is typically sunny, but it begins to rain more as you get further into October and November.
Best Way To Reach Destination
The best way to get to Taormina is to fly into Catania and then, either rent a car or take the train to Taormina. Whether you should rent a car or take public transit depends on whether you wish to explore while there. Taormina is 43 miles (70 km) from Catania airport, under an hour’s drive.
Recommended Accommodation
There’s a wide variety of accommodations in Taormina, from the famous San Domenico Palace hotel featured in The White Lotus (a Four Seasons property) to charming guesthouses and B&Bs scattered in town or perched along the cliffs that are more budget-friendly.
Oslo, Norway
Oslo is the bustling capital city of Norway. It is full of exciting activities and a great first stop on any fall trip to Norway or Europe. Fall is a great time to visit Oslo as the temperature is not yet too cold and the leaves are changing colors.
Dive into history at some of Oslo’s cool museums and historical buildings, such as the Viking Ship Museum, the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History (Norsk Folkemuseum), Akershus Fortress, and the Oslo Cathedral.
Spend some time in nature (yes, even in the city!) by exploring the giant green space of Nordmarka, the sculpture park of Vigeland Park, or sailing the Oslo fjords on a clear day.
Lastly, don’t miss out on wandering through some of Oslo’s fantastic neighborhoods, like the trendy, hipster Grunerlokka district or the Aker Brygge area, which combines traditional life and upscale elegance with its nice restaurants, boutiques, and promenade.
Weather
The best time to go to Oslo is early fall such as September or October for colorful leaves and the most sunlight. Once you get into November, it begins to get dark and rainy.
Average highs in September is 68° F, October is 48° F and November is 38° F. In November, you can also expect some snow.
However, during the first week of November, the Fjord Oslo Festival of Light Art is held which is only made better by the natural dark skies.
Best Way To Reach Destination
The easiest way to reach Oslo is to fly into the Oslo Airport located about 28 miles northeast of the city. There are express train links to the city center, making it easy to get into the city itself. If you arrive by train, the main station is in the heart of the city.
Recommended Accommodation
For accommodation, check out the Clarion Hotel The Hub, a fantastic hotel with modern decor, an organic breakfast buffet, a traditional sauna, and an amazing central location.

Valencia, Spain
Valencia is a beautiful city located on the eastern coast of Spain. It is known for its stunning beaches, mouth-watering cuisine, and rich cultural heritage.
Valencia is a perfect destination in Europe for a fall vacation. The city is less crowded in September, October and November making it easier to explore its hidden gems.
Among the most exciting things to do in Valencia is visit the City of Arts and Sciences, a collection of futuristic buildings that house a planetarium, an interactive museum, and an opera house.
If you love food and shopping, head over to the Central Market, a historic market hall that sells fresh produce, seafood, meat, and spices. Then, explore La Lonja, the old silk exchange now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There are several festivals and events during the fall season, with the most popular being the 9th of October, the day of the Valencian Community, which is celebrated with colourful historical parades.

Valencia experiences mild temperatures during the fall season, perfect for long strolls and exploration. The average high temperatures during the day in Fahrenheit ranges from 81-66 degrees. The weather is generally sunny with limited rain.

Visitors can also take a train or bus from other parts of Spain to Valencia. Getting to Valencia from Madrid is especially easy at 1h 40min.
Recommended Accommodation
As for accommodation, the Old Town is the best place to stay in Valencia. It is centrally located and offers easy access to the city’s attractions. It has a range of accommodation options to suit every budget, from luxury hotels to budget hostels, so you are really spoiled for choice.
Vienna, Austria
Vienna is one of the best European cities for a fall holiday. The beautiful capital city of Austria has a lot to offer, such as a stunning mix of modern, historical, and contemporary architecture.
One of my favorite places to visit in Vienna is Schönbrunn Palace. The beautiful palace was used as the summer residence of the reigning Habsburg family for decades. Nowadays, you can walk through the museum and learn all about the glittering history of Austria’s rulers. Additionally, the gardens are marvelous.
In Innere Stadt, (the Inner city), there are quite a few great things to do as well.
Visitors love seeing the Hofburg with the Sisi museum. The Hofburg is displaying not only the former living quarters of the late emperor but also his entire collection of jewelry and porcelain.
Art lovers will enjoy visiting the Belvedere, a famous museum located in a former imperial palace. It is home to the famous painting The Kiss by Gustav Klimt.
The Vienna Prater was the hunting ground used by the emperors. Today, it has been transformed into a large amusement park with old-time amusement rides.
Autumn is the perfect time in the city. There is beautiful fall foliage all over the parks. Chestnut roasters offer delicious treats at every corner and most importantly, it is wine season. Wineries from around Vienna present their new wines every year in fall in the city’s Heurigen (taverns).
Weather
Average highs in September is 68° F, in October is 57° F, and in November is 45° F. There are a few days of rain in each month, with the possibility of light snow starting in mid November.
Best Way To Reach Destination
Vienna has one major airport, Vienna International Airport in Schwechat. Upon arrival, take the ÖBB train to the city, which takes about 30 mins. If you are on a budget, make sure to avoid the CAT trains as they are a lot more expensive.
Recommended Accommodation
A fantastic place to stay in Vienna is the Steigenberger Hotel in the Herrengasse. It is located right in the Inner City and only a couple of steps away from all major attractions.
Corfu, Greece
Corfu is an amazing European beach destination in fall for anyone looking for a peaceful getaway. Located in the Ionian Sea off the northwest coast of Greece, it is filled with beautiful beaches, stunning views, and the best seafood.
One of the most popular attractions in Corfu is the Old Town, which is filled with colorful houses from the era when the city was under Venetian rule.
If you’re looking for stunning views and to dive into the island’s history, the Old Venetian Fortress won’t disappoint. The panoramic vistas are simply breathtaking – and you can enjoy them sipping wine over lunch at the restaurant. From the top, you can see the Old Town of Corfu, mainland Greece, and Albania.
Two more attractions worth visiting are the Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna and the tiny islet of Pontikonisi. The whitewashed monastery was built in the 17th century and although it is built on an islet, you can reach it on a pedestrian bridge.
Pontikonisi is one of the main landmarks of Corfu and one of the most photographed places in Greece. You can reach it with one of the boats regularly traveling from the monastery. Pontikonisi features a Byzantine chapel of Pantokrator and a very small cafe where you can relax in the lush vegetation of the islet.
Don’t miss the cafes at Kanoni, from where you can enjoy the iconic view of Pontikonisi and the Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna.
Weather
From September to October, the average temperature in Fahrenheit is between 82-74. This is the perfect temperature to enjoy Corfu’s beautiful beaches and attractions without being too hot.
By November, the temperatures start to fall to 65° F and the evenings can become quite chilly, so it is best to bring a lightweight jacket. The good news is that the sun is still out, making it a great time to enjoy the sights and sounds of Corfu.
Best Way To Reach Destination
Getting to Corfu is easy and convenient. Corfu International Airport is well-connected with Athens and several European cities. The airport is a short 10-minute drive from the Old Town.
Recommended Accommodation
Once you arrive, there are plenty of accommodation options. The Kerkyra Blue Hotel & Spa 5-star offers guests luxurious amenities such as swimming pools and a spa.
London, England
To say London in autumn is beautiful is an understatement. While Londoners love the warmth and sunshine that summer brings, by October, the cooler breeze, sound of crunching leaves under boots and delectable autumnal drinks are in full favour.
Every park and every street is taken over by a paradise of orange and red foliage, and the sky glows to match this natural landscape – so, it’s no surprise that England’s capital is one the best European fall vacations in Europe.
Experiencing autumn in London is as simple as wandering around Primrose Hill’s bookshops, having a luxury afternoon tea experience, or taking a stroll in Hyde Park with an orange-flavoured hot chocolate in hand. However, there are so many other exciting ways to take in the seasonal sights.
One of the best places to be is in Richmond Park – a lush habitat for over 600 deer whose strong antlers peer through morning mists to create the most delightful setting.
Another great activity involves exploring the incredible markets, particularly Covent Garden Market and Spitalfields Market.
In terms of events, London’s most popular autumn celebration is Bonfire Night, which takes place every November. It marks the failed 17th-century attempt to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I by Guy Fawkes. Today, the event ignites sparkle, great food, and a vibrant atmosphere across the city. It is less about death and more about having a wonderful evening with family and friends in the warmth of a radiant fire.
Weather
The average high temperature ranges from a pleasant 68°F to 53°F from September to November, with blue skies and dry days still plentiful. However, it is the United Kingdom, so rain is inevitable, even if your weather app says otherwise.
Best Way To Reach Destination
If you are arriving by plane, it is best to fly into London Heathrow Airport, but Luton Airport and Gatwick Airport are also great for flights from the rest of Europe.
If you catch a train, you can also travel directly to London St Pancras International from various cities across Western Europe.
Recommended Accommodation
London has an endless collection of hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs to make a home for a few days. Some of the most popular accommodations in Central London include Four Seasons Hotel London At Park Lane, Royal Lancaster London, and St Pancras Renaissance Hotel.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline on the Sorrentine Peninsula in southern Italy. This picturesque region has been popular with tourists for centuries, and it’s easy to see why. The spectacular views over the Mediterranean Sea, charming towns perched cliffside, and vibrant culture all combine to make this a beloved European fall holiday destination.
During autumn, wine lovers have the perfect opportunity to take part in grape harvesting and gain insight into regional wine-making processes. And where else should you go on a wine-tasting tour other than Italy, one of the world’s wine capitals?
Because of the nice weather, you can do almost anything on the Amalfi Coast in fall. From hiking stunning trails, such as the Path of Gods, to boat trips to Capri, Ischia, or Procida island, there is something for everyone.
You can even spend your day at one of the many beaches hidden along the coastline, step back in time at Pompeii and Herculaneum without the risking of getting sunburned, or climb the many steps on the narrow streets of Positano for a well-deserved shopping experience.
Weather
If you want to skip the crowds and not melt under the hot summer sun, you should come during the fall. Average high daytime temperatures range between 81°F and 65°F. You will also get plenty of sun in September, October and November. By November, expect around 4.2″ of rain.
Best Way To Reach Destination
Getting to the Amalfi Coast is easy from Naples International Airport, and you can choose to stay in Sorrento or Positano, for the best experience.
You can travel by train and bus, or you can easily book one of the many private transfer services that will take you from the airport directly to your hotel on the Amalfi Coast.
Recommended Accommodation
Another advantage of visiting in the fall is that you can save on accommodation, especially if you want to pamper yourself by staying in Positano.
Hotels such as Le Sirenuse or Il San Pietro di Positano are a dream not only for honeymooners but also for anyone who wants to enjoy 5* services with a fairytale-like view.
However, there are plenty of other budget-friendly accommodation options, in Sorrento or smaller villages like Cetara, Vietri sul Mare, or Ravello.
Zurich, Switzerland
A lovely place to visit for a European trip in fall is Zurich. During this time of year, the usual summer crowds are gone and visitors can find all kinds of fantastic activities to fill their itineraries.
For example, the annual Zurich Film Festival takes place over the course of nearly two weeks at the end of September and the beginning of October. During this time, tens of thousands of film and art enthusiasts from all over the world come to watch the 160 films that are showcased.
Alternatively, if you are looking for an adrenaline rush and perhaps, want to explore the area from above, consider paragliding! With a short bus or train ride, you can be soaring through the Swiss Alps in no time.
If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, be sure to visit Fraumünster Church. It is known for its intricate stained glass windows and considered one of the four main churches in Zurich.
Weather
You can expect moderate to cold temperatures from early to late fall ranging from 67°F – 40°F and rain around 30% of the time. The weather means everything is ridiculously green and stunningly beautiful.
Best Way To Reach Destination
For those interested in visiting, you can fly into the Zurich International Airport and take a 15-minute train into the city center.
Recommended Accommodation
Consider staying at the Storchen Zurich. It’s a luxurious 5-star hotel that’s located right on the water.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Soak up some late-season sunshine and visit Dubrovnik in autumn for a European getaway. You will find considerably less crowded streets and beautiful views.
If arriving in early fall, your chances are still high for taking a dip in the Adriatic Sea that has been warmed by the Dalmatian sun all summer long. For those visiting in later autumn, a picnic on a pebbled beach with the Old Town serving as your backdrop is a great alternative.
In addition to its lovely scenery, Dubrovnik has an impressive list of attractions to explore. A cable car ride up to the top of Mount Srd will treat you to spectacular views, while exploring Lovrijenac Fortress and wandering down the Jesuit Stairs will give you a glimpse into the city’s dramatic past.
Marvel at the Baroque architecture and grab a drink on Stradun with few tourists in sight – the perfect opportunity for capturing some amazing photos!
While in the Old Town, don’t pass up the chance to stop by the local market in Gundulic Square. Autumn brings the olive harvest, which means you’ll be greeted by stalls overflowing with an abundance of olives and olive oils along with other seasonal fares such as pomegranates and figs.
For those looking to explore the area, fall is also a great time to hop on a boat and cruise around the Elafiti archipelago. You’ll experience stunning landscapes and blissful solitude that evades summer visitors – think intimate coves, remote fishing villages and some of the best seafood you’ll ever eat.
Weather
In autumn, daytime temperatures hover from 78°F – 62°F during the day, making it a particularly wonderful time to visit the iconic Mediterranean town. Expect on average 4.3″ of rain each month.
Best Way To Reach Destination
The best airport to fly into is the Dubrovnik Airport, just a 30-minute drive away from the city’s medieval walls.
Recommended Accommodation
With prices in Dubrovnik significantly less compared to summer months, fall offers an ideal opportunity to stay in the heart of the Old Town. Book a room at The Pucić Palace for a totally immersive experience with the city’s highlights at your doorstep.
Brussels, Belgium
Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is a vibrant and diverse city boasting a rich cultural heritage and dynamic atmosphere. It’s home to some of the world’s finest chocolates, beers, and waffles, making it a must-visit European trip in fall for foodies and culture vultures alike.
Fall is the perfect time for a Brussels city break as the weather cools down and the autumn foliage enhances the city’s already picturesque streets. In addition, the centrally located Brussels Park is awash in oranges, reds, and yellows. It’s the perfect place for an autumn stroll.
If it rains, be sure to head into one of the city’s 87 museums. One must-see museum in Brussels is the Royal Museum of Fine Arts. The museum houses an impressive collection of over 20,000 paintings, sculptures, and drawings from the 15th to the 21st centuries. This awe-inspiring collection is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in art and culture.
While the parks and museums are available year-round in Brussels, one major reason to visit in the fall is the city’s annual beer festival. Every year, Grand Place becomes a pilgrimage sight for beer lovers, who flock here to try over 400 Belgian beers. The event takes place in September and is free to attend (although tastings are paid).
Weather
Brussels cools down during the autumn months, with temperatures ranging anywhere from the low 40s in November to mid-60s (F) in September. The city also gets rain around 9 days each month, but only 1.9″ of rain on average.
Best Way To Reach Destination
The most convenient and hassle-free way to get to Brussels is to take a direct flight to Brussels airport from any major European city. Once you arrive, make your way to the heart of the city, Grand Place, with a quick and easy 25-minute train ride.
Recommended Accommodation
For the ultimate Brussels experience, stay in a hotel close to Grand Place, like the Ibis Hotel Grand Place. This way, you’ll be right in the middle of all the excitement and action, and have easy access to all the amazing sights that the city has to offer.
Nice, France
In the south of France on Cote d’Azur, between the Mediterranean Sea and the foot of the magnificent French Alps, and just a few steps from the Italy border, lies the truly spectacular city of Nice. Lovely beaches, azure water, a picturesque promenade, breathtaking views, charming colorful old town, diverse cultural scene, and delicious cuisine make Nice a very popular destination for travelers from all over the world. It is also one of the best places for a fall European trip.
Nice Old Town invites you to slowly explore its colorful streets. Sit with a cup of coffee on Plaza Masséna and watch people go by. Alternatively, admire the lovely sunset from Promenade des Anglais or Castle Hill. For beach lovers, take a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean Sea.
Take a road trip and explore the small nearby medieval towns of Menton, Eze, or Villefranche-sur-Mer. If you prefer some glamor and wealth, head to Monaco and Cannes, or if you are keen to learn more about perfumes, delight in a visit to Grasse.
The huge advantage of visiting in fall is that high season is over so the hordes of holiday tourists are no more. Instead, autumn visitors can enjoy a more chilled and relaxing atmosphere.
On the other hand, it’s also harvest time for winemakers. So, if you have ever been curious about what this busy time of year looks like at a winery, this would be an ideal time to go.
Weather
You will find a pleasant Mediterranean climate with lots of sun, little rain, and warm high temperatures varying from 61-76°F. This makes Nice, and the whole of Cote d’Azur, an amazing fall getaway in Europe.
Best Way To Reach Destination
The nearest airport to Nice is in… Nice, located just a few kilometers from the city center. Thanks to that close proximity, you can arrive to the center in just 25 minutes by bus, tram or even taxi.
Recommended Accommodation
Albert 1er is a great place to stay if you want to be close to the old town. It also is just a few steps to the beach and promenade.
Killarney, Ireland
Killarney is a town in the county Kerry in southwestern Ireland. It is often used as a base for exploring the Ring of Kerry and many other nearby sites.
Killarney is one of the best autumn destinations in Europe as you can avoid the crowds, have mild temperatures, and enjoy local festivals.
If you visit in November, you can check out the Storytelling and Folklore Festival in nearby Sneem. Storytelling has a rich history in Irish culture and during the festival you can enjoy workshops, lectures and even a storytelling pub trail.
Other popular things to do are driving the Ring of Kerry, touring Ross Castle, and taking a jaunting cart ride in Killarney National Park to the Muckross House.
The Ring of Kerry offers breathtaking views and passes through several notable areas like the Gap of Dunloe, the Ladies View, and Torc Waterfall. You may even get a glimpse of the Skellig Islands on a clear day.
For more scenic views and the chance to tour an old Irish castle, make time in your itinerary to visit Ross Castle. Located by a lake, this picturesque setting will have you wishing you lived in the castle before it fell to ruins. A tour will entertain you and provide the history of what went on and who used to live in this impressive place.
Finally, for a relaxing day, spend some time in Killarney National Park where you can take a horse drawn cart ride to admire the area. During your ride, you will pass old buildings, a cemetery, lakes and mountains. The journey will stop at the Muckross House where you can do a tour of this gigantic building or take a stroll in the gardens.
Weather
Fall temperatures range from 61-51 degrees Fahrenheit with a mixture of sun and rain making for ample opportunity to see the sights and enjoy daylight hours.
Best Way To Reach Destination
Killarney can be easily reached by flying into Shannon Airport which is an approximately 2-hour drive.
One of the best Ireland travel tips is that you should rent a car for your stay as it allows for the best opportunities for sightseeing in various areas.
Recommended Accommodation
For a comfortable and homelike stay, make reservations at the Killarney Lodge Guesthouse. The large, clean and comfortable rooms will allow you to fully relax after a long day and the hearty and delicious breakfast will give you enough fuel for your adventures.
Rome, Italy
Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is one of the most visited cities in Europe and is usually packed in the summer months.
This is why fall is an excellent time to visit most Italian cities, in particular Rome, as the weather is mild, and there are fewer crowds than during the peak summer months.
While in Rome, make sure to visit the Colosseum, one of the wonders of the ancient world. Its rich history makes it a popular spot for history lovers visiting the city.
Also, make sure to stop by Vatican City to explore St. Peter’s Square, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Sistine chapel. If you’re religious, you can also get blessed by the Pope himself on certain days of the week.
Other attractions in the city include the Pantheon (an architectural marvel with the largest unsupported dome in the world), the Trevi Fountain (the stunning 18th-century baroque-style fountain in Rome), and Castel Sant’Angelo, also known as the Pope’s fortress.
If you’re looking for some fun nightlife, check out Trastevere and Testaccio for fun bars and restaurants to visit.
Weather
The average high temperature in Rome during the fall is around 82°F in September dropping down to 62°F in November, making autumn the perfect time for exploring the city. By November, expect around 3.7″ of rain over 9 days.
Best Way To Reach Destination
Getting to Rome is relatively easy as it is well connected internationally with the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, also known as Fiumicino Airport. From there, you can get a taxi, train, or bus straight to the center of the Eternal City.
Recommended Accommodation
While visiting the eternal city, I recommend staying in the center of Rome. My favorite areas include Prati and Monti. If you’re based in these areas, you will be able to walk almost everywhere or get the bus to reach the main attractions easily.
Vik, Iceland
Vik, a small fishing village along the southern coastline of Iceland, is an excellent place to visit in Europe for an autumn vacation, given that you can enjoy the area’s spectacular scenery with pleasant weather for the very last time of the year.
One of the best things to do in Vik is to visit Reynisfjara, one of the most breathtaking black sand beaches in Iceland. The beach is known for its jet black sand, dramatic cliffs made of columnar basalt, and rugged sea stacks. The beach is so otherworldly looking that it was actually used as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
During the fall, the beach is much less crowded than the busy summertime and it’s the perfect place to enjoy the last days of sunshine in Iceland.
Want something a bit more adventurous? Visit the nearby Katla Ice Cave, a natural tunnel carved from ice from the Kötlujökull glacier. To enter the cave, you’ll need to hike to and descend into the cave with a guide.
Once you’ve entered, you’ll be surrounded by a jaw-dropping combination of black ash from the nearby Katla volcano and stunningly blue and ancient glacier ice.
When you visit in the fall, you may get a treat that’s usually only associated with Iceland’s winter- the Northern Lights! This incredible show by Mother Nature becomes visible to our eyes starting in September, when Iceland’s nights grow longer and dark. Staying outside to actually enjoy the Northern Lights is much more pleasant in fall, as compared to the freezing winter.
Weather
The average high temperatures in Vik in the fall will be in the mid-40s through low 50s. Iceland is known for its unpredictable weather and fall is no exception. Expect around 13 days of rain each month or 4.4″ so be sure to include a rain jacket on your Iceland packing list.
Best Way To Reach Destination
Fly into Keflavik International Airport near Reykjavik and drive the two and a half hours southeast to Vik.
Recommended Accommodation
Consider staying at Norour Vik, which offers cozy, private cabins with jaw-dropping mountain views.
Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul is one of the world’s most magical cities. With vibrant neighbourhoods, dozens of fascinating sights and a beautiful setting between two continents, you could easily spend a lifetime exploring this amazing city.
And of all the times to visit, autumn is the best season to explore Istanbul. The weather is pleasant, yet the throngs of tourists have largely subsided.
What should you do in Istanbul? Well, there are about a million different things to do, but here are a few of the best activities.
Go on a river cruise along the Bosphorus. This is hands down one of the best ways to enjoy the beautiful sights Istanbul has to offer. From the comfort of your boat, you can see the Dolmabahce Palace, Ortakoy Mosque, Rumeli Fortress, Maiden’s Tower and the Bosphorus Bridge. Not to mention that in fall, you’ll get to enjoy the beautiful colours of the leaves reflecting in the water.
Be sure to grab a balik ekmek (fish sandwich, or literally ‘fish bread’). It’s an Istanbul favourite.
Shop til you drop at the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar. The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, filled to the brim with carpets, artifacts and plenty of tourist kitsch. Get lost in the labyrinth-like maze and let your pocketbook guide you around this fascinating and bustling market.
Relax in a hamam. A hamam, or a Turkish bath, is a must-do when you’re in Istanbul. Expect to lay down on a large marble slab and have your body scrubbed, slathered and washed in a warm steamy room. It’s the perfect way to relax after a long day of sightseeing.
And finally, Akbank Jazz Festival, Turkey’s oldest jazz festival, occurs in the fall every year, usually in late September to early October. It’s a magnificent celebration of music, held in different venues across the city. Be sure to check it out while you’re there.
Weather
With average high temperatures between 73F-58F, the weather is cooler than mid-summer but perfect for walking around and sightseeing. Until late October, you can expect sunny days, allowing you to enjoy the streets crowd-free and easily get a table at one of the many outdoor cafes.
Best Way To Reach Destination
Istanbul International Airport is brand-new, with all the amenities you could ask for, plus it’s a major international flight hub so you can find a flight from almost anywhere.
Recommended Accommodation
There are plenty of places to stay in Istanbul, but you can’t do better than the Ikiz Konak Boutique Hotel. It’s located in our favourite neighbourhood, Kadikoy, has beautifully decorated and spacious rooms and is within walking distance to some of Istanbul’s best shopping and restaurants.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam is an incredible European city with much more to offer than the party scene for which it is often known. It features cobbled streets, intricate canals with quaint colourful buildings and plenty of foliage to see in the fall making it a fantastic autumn holiday spot in Europe.
There is plenty to do in Amsterdam. Rent a bike and ride along the canals to marvel at the historic windmills. It’s easy to rent a bike on pretty much every street corner for a very good price and use it as a mode of transport throughout your trip.
Westerpark tends to attract many locals on the weekend with its vibrant market. Featuring entertainment, fresh produce, delicious baked and tasty street food, it’s nestled among the trees and a great spot to see fall colors in Amsterdam.
Another way has to be on a canal boat tour. In fact, the best way to explore the canals is with a self-drive electric boat. Eco Boats Amsterdam is a great choice. They provide a great loop route which makes it super easy. Be sure to bring a picnic to enjoy the trip at your leisure.
Much like nearby Germany, Amsterdam celebrates the beer festival also know as Octoberfest. During late September and early October, beer lovers will be able to celebrate in several places throughout the city.
Weather
Average high temperatures range from 65F to 49F in fall with a 30% chance of rainfall. It can be quite cloudy so bring an umbrella and wear layers.
Best Way To Reach Destination
In terms of getting to Amsterdam, the Eurostar is a fantastic option which starts in the United Kingdom and makes a stop in France and Belgium. The international train station is quite central and within walking distance to many of the popular landmarks.
Skhipol airport is another option and around 30 minutes by train. It is much more cost effective than a taxi. Hence, arriving by train, even if it’s from an international destination, is a really good option.

Piedmont, Italy
Piedmont, Italy (or Piemonte as it is known in Italian) is located in Northwestern Italy, home of the Nebbiolo grapes and white truffles, and the birthplace of the Slow Food Movement.
The Nebbiolo grape actually gets its name from the Italian word for fog, or nebbia, as the rolling hills of Piedmont are often obscured by a light mist that benefits both the grapes and the truffles.
Piedmont is the second-largest region in Italy, with Turin its largest city. But most visitors either visit the mountain ski resorts and lake districts in the north, or spend time exploring the small villages of the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato hill districts, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The best time to visit is in the fall, during wine harvest and white truffle season, which runs from September to January.
If you can manage, try to go from mid-October through early December, during the White Truffle Fair in Alba. This bacchanal of wine, cheese, meats, and especially truffles is the event of the season. Tickets to the fair gain you entrance to the fairgrounds, where you can sample and purchase goods from regional purveyors.
Each weekend, the neighborhoods around town host special events including medieval games and street fairs. Visitors can also purchase tickets to special events such as wine tastings and cooking demonstrations. This is a must for truffle lovers!
Some of the other things to do in Piedmont also revolve around food. Truffle hunting with a licensed truffle hunter and their specially trained dogs is a bucket-list worthy experience.
To learn the differences between a Barolo and a Barbaresco, as well as explore some of the other wines of the region, including the Roero Arneis or Gavi, it pays to take a wine tour with Piedmont Food and Wine Tours, who also can arrange cooking classes.
While exploring the area, be sure to stop and visit some of the hilltop medieval towns that offer all the charm of Tuscan towns, but without the crowds. The prettiest include La Moro, Neive, Castiglione Falletto, Monforte d’Alba, and Barbaresco.
A visit to Piedmont in the fall is a perfect choice for foodies and wine lovers!
Weather
The weather in the fall is very pleasant, with highs in the 70s and 60s in September and October. November is cooler with highs in the low 50s. There will be a mix of sun, clouds and a little rain, although often the mist burns off by mid-day.

Getting to Piedmont is fairly easy with flights into Turin or nearby Milan. From there, you will want to rent a car to explore the area. You can also take the train from Milan (1 hour away) into Alba, Asti, or Turin.

Isle of Harris & Lewis, Scotland
The Island of Harris and Lewis is the largest island in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Harris and Lewis are often described as two separate islands but they are in fact the same island.
Both Harris and Lewis have fantastic scenery and some of the best beaches, not just in Scotland, but in Europe. The beaches not to miss are Luskentyre and Seilebost on the Isle of Harris and Uig Sands on the Isle of Lewis.
To learn more about Lewis, visit the Eilean Donan Museum in Stornoway. It is free and gives a good overview of the history of the island.
The highlight is the Uig chessmen from the Viking era. They are chess pieces carved from walrus tusk that were found in the sand in Uig.
Also, close to Stornoway are the 5,000-year-old Callanish stones. The stones are similar to those at Stonehenge but are actually older and much less visited.
The Outer Hebrides never gets as busy as the rest of Scotland but it is much better to come outside of school holidays. Therefore autumn is a great time to visit.
September is especially good when you can catch the Hebrides international film festival or in October or early November for the Facland Book Festival.
Weather
In September, daytime temperatures range from 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. In October, the weather is more variable with temperatures ranging from 45-55 degrees. November is slightly cooler.
This is Scotland so always expect four seasons in one day. The good thing about the changing weather is that although it might rain in the morning, it could be blue sky by early afternoon.
Best Way To Reach Destination
There are no international flights to Harris and Lewis. From Inverness and Glasgow flights are available to Stornoway airport. Alternatively, ferries go to both Tarbert on Harris and Stornoway on Lewis. The ferry takes longer but is a much more budget friendly option and you can often see whales and dolphins during the crossing.
Recommended Accommodation
In terms of where to base yourself for your stay, one of the best locations is Stornoway, staying at Lews Castle. For the best views nothing can beat Uig Sands Rooms.
Madrid, Spain
While it’s common to chase the Spanish sun in summertime you might wonder, is Madrid worth visiting in fall as well? The answer is, absolutely yes. After spending a year living in Madrid through all its seasons, fall in Madrid is a lovely experience.
For one, you’ll get to observe the city’s most iconic sites framed by leaves swapping their colors for the season. Stroll through Retiro Park for the full effect of this autumnal shift in one of Madrid’s best loved parks. Or, grab your camera and capture Plaza Cibeles through multicolored fall leaves.
Another reason why it makes sense to visit Madrid in the fall is to have an opportunity to join Spanish National Day (Oct 12) festivities. This includes a huge parade with many attendees, including the King!
Finally, fall in Madrid is the perfect season to enjoy dunking fresh churros in a hot cup of chocolate. While churros con chocolate are a must-try food in Madrid year-round, there’s something extra satisfying about doing so in slightly cooler temperatures.
The city center in Madrid is very well connected, and a great place to stay. On my most recent visit to the city, I stayed at Hotel Liabeny just off of the central square — Sol. It was a quiet, pleasant and convenient option.
Weather
What’s really wonderful about Madrid in fall is that the weather is still comfortable, averaging between 50-65 degrees F with plenty of sunshine still to be had.
