I have asked some amazing travel bloggers for their recommendation for the best national parks to visit in summer in the United States. They have considered weather, location, and the best things to do in each park. If they have spent time in a hotel that they would recommend or a great campsite, these have been included as well. Finally, I have asked them to offer at least one “Pro Tip” that hopefully helps you beat the crowds, keep safe or save you money.
Olympic National Park, Washington

Olympic National Park, located in the northwest corner of Washington State, offers one of the most diverse landscapes of any U.S. national park, with snow-capped mountains, impossibly green rainforests, craggy beaches, and even some hot springs. It is one of the best national parks to visit in June in the USA.
Best Things To Do
Given the Park’s massive 1,442 square mile footprint, there are many things to see and do. However, if you plan, you can hit a ton of the highlights in just a weekend in Olympic National Park.
For example, hike the easy 1.1-mile Hall of Mosses trail in the famous Hoh Rainforest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. You’ll walk through a forest straight out of a fairytale as you gaze up at the cathedral of impossibly grand trees (some reaching over 300 feet high and seven feet in diameter!).
Want to get a taste of Washington’s mountainscapes? While it likely will be too early in the season to explore some of the Park’s hikes at high elevations, you can still get a taste of the Olympic Mountain range and the Pacific Northwest’s famous technicolor lakes on the Mount Storm King trail. This challenging 5.3-mile hike takes you through yet another impossibly lush forest, rising over 2,000 feet to the summit of (you guessed it!) Mount Storm King. For brave souls who aren’t scared of heights, you can scramble to the very top of the summit and have a panoramic view of the vibrantly colored Lake Crescent and its surrounding mountains sprawling at your feet below.
Finally, make sure to end one of your days at Olympic NP at either Ruby Beach or Rialto Beach, both of which offer picturesque sea stacks and absolutely stunning sunsets.

While the Pacific Northwest is known for its rainy weather, June is a spectacular time to visit Olympic National Park, given that the skies will be clear and sunny and the temperature pleasantly warm in the high 50oF. The rainforests can experience up to 50 inches of rain in the winter, and by late spring, the landscape is lush and vibrant with life.
To get to the Park, you should fly into Seattle and make the drive to your basecamp for your stay, like the small town of Port Angeles (two and a half hours from Seattle) or Forks (3 and a half hours from Seattle), famous for being the home of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen of the Twilight series.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most visited parks in America and one of the best places to visit in June in the USA, and rightly so. This subrange of the Appalachian Mountains offers its visitors spectacular vistas and endless activities in nature all buried in a dense deciduous forest. In fact, the Great Smoky Mountains cover an impressive 500,000 acres between Tennessee and North Carolina. So, needless to say, there’s a lot to do in one of the best national parks to travel to in the United States in June.
Best Things To Do
If you’re looking for the best views head up to Clingman’s Dome. It’s the highest point in Tennessee and offers a 360-degree panoramic view over the mountains. Then, if you’re up for a long walk, hike to Rainbow Falls, one the most spectacular waterfalls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In the afternoon, the sun bounces off the falls creating a magnificent rainbow. The hike is a 2-hour slog uphill, but it’s worth the effort.
Given its size, there are a lot of nearby towns, but the most accessible is Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It’s a great home base with tons of things to do.
Weather And Directions
June is the best time to visit. Temperatures are in the mid-60s, and it’s before the big rush of tourists in July and August. While it does rain year-round in the Great Smoky Mountains NP, it’s never for long. Plus when the rain settles, fog or ‘smoke’ rises over the mountains, giving way to some spectacular scenery. Just make sure to bring a rain jacket.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a 3 1/2 hours drive from Nashville, the closest international airport.
Pro Tip
The National Park is home to over a thousand black bears. While it has become trendy to feed these bears or approach them for a photo, don’t do it! They are dangerous and will attack if provoked. For the safety of everyone, respect their space and admire them from a distance.

One of the best national parks to go to in the United States in June is Glacier National Park. Located in Northern Montana, it is a mountainous terrain full of breathtaking views of the Montana Rocky Mountains. Glacier National Park includes about 1500 square miles of wilderness with Glacier-created peaks and valleys. From epic hikes to glaciers, gorgeous lakes, and waterfalls, to white water rafting and fishing, this is an awe-inspiring experience that is a bucket list item for sure.
June is a great time to visit. You can get in before the crowds and enjoy much of what this spectacular National Park has to offer.
Best Things To Do
Some of the best things to do in Glacier National Park include driving the incredible Going To The Sun road, which gets its name for a reason, as it curves upward to Logan Pass and beyond with mountainous views and jaw-dropping landscape vistas.
Logan Pass is also a great stop for one of the most epic hikes, the Highline Trail to Haystack Butte and back. A full 8 miles, this is one most beautiful and scenic hikes you will ever take. You may also catch a glimpse of mountain goats and a variety of other wildlife on the trail.
Two other fantastic hikes are the seven-mile hike to Virginia Falls and Trail of the Cedars to Avalanche Lake, which is a 6-mile round trip hike.
Other fun things to do in Glacier NP include visiting Polbridge Mercantile to get delicious, home baked Huckleberry treats (a specialty of Montana), souvenir shopping in West Glacier, taking a famous red bus tour of the park, visiting Apgar Village, or enjoying a water activity on Lake McDonald.
The biggest town near Glacier National Park is Whitefish, which is a great ski resort town. There are resorts in Whitefish where you can stay, and it is well worth a visit, at least for a day trip.

The closest airport is Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell which is around 45 minutes by car.

It is always wise to check what is open before you start your day. Weather, fires, or even bear activity may mean some routes and trails are closed.

Nearly every American has a favorite National Park, but if you were looking for one of the best national parks to spend time in June in the USA, Bryce Canyon NP in southern Utah would be great choice. Not only is the weather fantastic in June, but it’s also right before the Park gets crowded in the summer. Plus, accommodation prices tend to be lower.
Bryce Canyon National Park is famous for its incredible landscapes and unique beauty. It features more than 35,000 acres of land and is home to the largest collection of hoodoos (tall, thin spires of rock that protrude from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland) that can be found in North America. The majority of the National Park features rock formations and is located in the Utah desert.
Best Things To Do
When visiting Bryce Canyon, you absolutely shouldn’t miss hiking the Navajo Loop. This short hike is moderate but offers the best way to get up close to some of the most popular parts of the Park, like Wall Street. This hike will only take a few hours at most.
Another must-do when visiting the Park is to take the scenic drive which leads you throughout the Park. Along the way, stop at great viewpoints like Sunset Point, Sunrise Point, Inspiration Point, and of course, Bryce Point. This is one of the easiest ways to see beautiful panoramic views without doing much legwork.
Weather And Directions
Because of the location of Bryce Canyon NP, the temperature doesn’t normally get higher than 75°F, even in the warmest months. This includes the month of June.
The two closest airports are Salt Lake City International Airport and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. They are both a four hour drive to the Park.
Pro Tip
When visiting Bryce Canyon National Park, start your day EARLY. Get there when the sun rises to begin your hikes because the trails start to get busy around 10 a.m.

Channel Islands National Park, California

Channel Islands National Park is one of the best national parks to visit in June in the USA. Temperatures start to warm up but aren’t hot in June. Plus, if there has been rain, then there will be wildflower blooms around the islands.
There are five islands and they are located right off the coast of Southern California. The landscape reflects a Mediterranean climate like most of the coastal areas in Southern California.
This National Park is special because it’s been preserved in its natural wilderness state. There is no transportation available on the islands and all areas must be accessed on foot or by private boat or kayak.
Best Things To Do
Each island is unique. Some are known for their sea caves that you can kayak into, others are more known for their wildlife, such as wild foxes or sea lions. In addition, there are some wonderful hikes on each of the islands.
The only way to access Channel Island NP is by ferry or with a private boat. You can pick up the ferry in Ventura, California. The ferry doesn’t go to every island year-round, so you’ll need to check on their website when planning your trip. Santa Rosa Island tends to be the most popular.
There aren’t any hotels on the Islands, but you can camp. Reservations can be made ahead of time on Recreation.gov.
On the ferry ride over, you will likely encounter dolphins that swim, ride and jump beside the boat. You may even see whales. Bring a jacket, it can get quite chilly.
Weather And Directions
The closest airport to Channel Islands National Park is Los Angeles International Airport. It is around 1 1/2 hours to Ventura. It takes around 1 1/2 hours to reach the Park by ferry.
In June, you can expect a morning fog and then it will burn off by mid-morning leaving lovely mild temperatures. Daytime temperatures average around 70oF.
Pro Tip
Make sure not to leave any trash on any of the islands at Channel Island National Park or feed any wildlife you might encounter. It helps to preserve this area for other visitors and keep wildlife from becoming dependent on humans for food.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the United States, the only large national park in the Northeast and one of the best places to visit in the USA in June. Spread across a series of larger and smaller islands off the coast of northern Maine, Acadia offers a compact and scenic combination of mountains, woods, beaches and coastal waters.
June is an excellent time to go because daytime temperatures are great for outdoor activities and school holidays have not yet begun for most Northeastern schools so it is less busy.
Best Things To Do
There are plenty of hiking trails, rocks to climb by the water, ranger-led tours and a road for scenic drives through the Park.
The most unique feature of Acadia NP is 45 miles of car-free carriage roads that were built by John D. Rockefeller. You access these gravel roads via stone gatehouses. They are ideal for cycling and you can cross up to 17 stone bridges if you ride the length of it. No two bridges are the same and it’s fun to hop off your bicycles to explore beneath them. Mountain, hybrid or fat tire bikes are best for these roads. You can rent bicycles in Bar Harbor if you don’t travel with your own.
Regardless of how you explore Acadia, be sure to stop by Jordan Pond House to try its famous popovers, ideally with a glass of wild-blueberry lemonade. The popovers are always made to order and come with butter and strawberry jam. Take yours out to the lawn behind the restaurant so you can take in the view of Jordan Pond and its surrounding mountains.
The other unique way to explore Acadia National Park is by boat. Hop on a schooner in Bar Harbor for a Ranger-led tour of the waters, or connect with one of the town’s outfitters for a guided kayak tour.
Bar Harbor is the also where you’ll find restaurants and hotels. It’s a pleasant town in its own right, where you’ll find good local ice cream and beer, and Maine lobster in everything from salad to quesadillas.
Directions And Weather
The popularity of Acadia National Park doesn’t mean it’s easy to get to. The main part of the Park is on Mount Desert Island, but parts of it extend to small outlying islands and part of the mainland across the Mount Desert Narrows. There is a small international airport in Bangor, about an hour away. But you might find a bigger selection of flights to Logan International Airport in Boston, a four-hour drive away along Maine’s scenic coast.
In June, daytime temperatures are in the low to mid 70s.
Pro Tip
If you forget some key outdoor clothing or gear, or wish to add to your collection, a small L.L. Bean outlet store is located 30 minutes from Bar Harbor. If you drive up from Boston, you’ll find a bigger outlet, and several regular L.L. Bean stores in Freeport, the company’s hometown.

Haleakala National Park, Hawaii

Haleakala National Park can be found on the island of Maui and is one of only two national parks in the state of Hawaii. The 47-square-mile Park is composed of two separate districts, the Summit and the Kipahulu District. Kula is the closest town to the Summit District and Hana is the closest town to the Kipahulu District. They each have dramatically different landscapes and geographies.
Best Things To Do
There are several ways that you can explore this Haleakala National Park. The first way is by driving up Haleakala to the summit of the volcano crater. Watching the sunrise above the clouds at 10,000 feet is a bucket list experience.
Another way to explore the crater is by hiking up it. There are a handful of hikes that take you in, through or around the crater. If you crave adventure, the Sliding Sands Trail takes you down to the crater floor. You’ll feel like you are hiking on the surface of Mars.
The Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park is on East Maui just past Hana town. Here you can experience the dramatic coast line, volcanic inlets and hike the Pipiwai Trail to one of Maui’s tallest waterfalls.
You can not drive through Haleakala National Park and reach both districts as they each have separate entrances.
Weather And Directions
Winter months bring more rains and sometimes snow (atop the crater) which is why Haleakala NP is one of the best national parks to visit in June in the United States. Days are longer, rain is less frequent and temperatures are warmer.
Kula is 25 minutes and Hana is 2 1/2 hours from Kahului Airport, Maui’s international airport.
Pro Tip
Don’t be fooled by the warm temperatures on the beaches of Maui. Because of the elevation, it can get cold on the Summit, especially when visiting for sunrise or sunset, so make sure you wear appropriate clothing.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park was the very first national park in the world and is a UNESCO World heritage site. It is 2.2 million acres and located mostly in Wyoming, although some spills over into Montana and Idaho. The granddaddy of national parks is a stunning mix of vast plains, rich woodland, and impressive geothermal activity.
Mid-June sees the beginning of the summer season at Yellowstone, so visiting at the start of the month is usually less busy. However, snowfall at the higher altitudes is possible as late as June.
Best Things To Do
One of the highlights of visiting Yellowstone NP in June is the abundance of wildlife. The bears have emerged from hibernation in the spring, and the park is alive with rejuvenation. Take a dawn drive through the Hayden and Lamar Valleys, and catch a glimpse of wolves, bears and large herds of bison.
The pleasant sunny days in June make for good hiking and exploration. Take scenic drives around Firehole Lake Drive, explore the white terraces of Mammoth Springs; and see the turquoise mineral waters of Grand Prismatic Spring.
As for great hikes, take the Brink of the Lower Falls Trail. This is an easy 1.5 mile round trip hike (although it’s steep) to see the Lower Falls of Yellowstone up close. Also, consider doing the Fairy Falls & Imperial Meadow Loop. This is a kid-friendly trail up through the Midway Geyser Basin and to the Falls.
Weather And Directions
Temperatures in Yellowstone National Park in June are around 62 degrees during the day. Towards the end of June, you will see temps up to about 70F, and minimal rainfall.
The nearest international airport to Yellowstone National Park is Bozeman Yellowstone (BZN), a 2-hour drive from the west entrance. The bigger, and likely cheaper airport to fly into is in Salt Lake City, Utah – although this is a 5-hour drive. However, if you are planning a bigger road trip to include Grand Teton National Park and other sites, then it may be a better option for you.

The best view of Old Faithful erupting is from the rocking chairs on the side veranda of the Old Faithful Lodge. The elevation allows an uninterrupted view, which is especially picturesque at dusk.

Pinnacles National Park, California

Pinnacles National Park is California’s newest park and, at 41 square miles, it is one of the smallest national parks in the US. The landscape is rocky and dry, resembling a desert, but punctuated by monoliths, talus caves and various types of shrubs.
Best Things To Do
The most popular activity is hiking in Pinnacles National Park. There are several beginner and intermediate hiking trails that bring you to interesting geological features. Bear Gulch Reservoir and the Bear Gulch Caves are the most popular destinations – after hiking up through a cave you’ll arrive at a calm pool underneath a tower of rocks. Balconies Cliffs and Caves is another popular hiking trail, though the most scenic would be High Peaks.
Intermediate climbers also come to Pinnacles NP to scale the side of one of its many monoliths and rock walls. There are dozens of climbing routes throughout the Park. However, there are no facilities for renting gear or taking lessons, so climbers must have sufficient experience and have their own gear.
Weather And Directions
Pinnacles National Park gets an average of 0 days of rain in the summer, so you’re all but guaranteed to have fantastic weather at one of the best national parks to spend time in the USA in June. Some people find July to September too hot for hiking, as the temperature exceeds 90F daily. June is much more pleasant, as you’ll still benefit from completely sunny days, while the average high temperature is between 80 and 85 F.
The closest town to Pinnacles would be Hollister, though the closest major city is San Jose. From San Jose, it is a 1.5 hour drive to Pinnacles. In you’re arriving from outside California, San Jose is the closest International airport, though San Francisco is only an hour further.
Pro Tip
Hike High Peaks at sunrise. The view along High Peaks is absolutely beautiful, but even more so when the sun is rising. High Peaks can be accessed from both sides of Pinnacles National Park, but it is recommended you start on the east side (parking at Bear Gulch Day Use Area) as this will put you on the side of the rising sun. The rocks behind you will glow pink and gold with the early morning light. Hiking for sunrise also means you’ll get to the Park before the crowds.
Accommodation
Mikaela says, “Most people coming to Pinnacles will camp at its campground. There are also some free camping options in the area, though these are less reliable and have minimal facilities. Holister has a few hotels, though they’re nothing to write home about. If you’re thinking of camping, book your campsite reservation far in advance.”
Indiana Dunes National Park

If you’re looking for a non-traditional beach vacation, look no further than Indiana Dunes National Park. Located along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes NP comprises 15 miles of spectacular shoreline with lakeside views. It is one of the best national parks to visit in June in the USA with its sunny weather and comfortably warm temperatures.
Indiana Dunes was previously designated as a National Lakeshore. However, it was elevated to National Park status in 2019. Now it includes 15,000 acres of sand dunes mixed with oak savannas, mature forests, marshes and prairies. Both a state park and the National Park are located in the area and share the same visitor center. Each park is worth visiting and an ideal Indiana Dunes itinerary should include stops in both.

While there are many recreation opportunities at Indiana Dunes National Park, most visitors flock to its sandy beaches. The Park offers 8 different beaches from which to choose with plenty of opportunities for sun bathing or beach walking.
Hiking is another popular activity at the Park. There are miles of trails available through the sandy dunes and oak trees. Trail 9 provides a great introduction to the park’s ecosystem, or you can head to Indiana Dunes State Park to take on the 3 Dune Challenge.

June offers sunny weather and mild temperatures averaging 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Located only an hour’s drive from Chicago, Indiana Dunes NP is 35 miles from the Chicago Midway Airport and 41 miles from the Chicago O’Hare Airport.

For a quieter experience, head to Kemil Beach or Dunbar Beach. These beaches are smaller and attract fewer crowds. If all the parking lots are full, go to West Beach because it has the largest parking area.

There are plenty of things to do in Grand Canyon National Park. Most people visit the South Rim to enjoy stunning viewpoints along the South Rim and inside the canyon. Sunrise and sunset are especially beautiful. There are free shuttles along most of the rim in June.
The eastern section of the South Rim is the Desert View Drive, and you will need a car to drive most of this route. There are lots of things to do. Mount Rainier National Park is a breathtaking place to visit any time of year but it is one of the best national parks to spend time in June in the USA because there is less snow on the ground and a better chance for sunny clear days. The Park is located in Washington State about 2 hours drive outside Seattle, depending on which entrance you visit. It is a huge national park with 370 square miles of trails, old-growth forests, mountains, waterfalls, and more.

You could easily spend multiple days exploring Mount Rainier National Park but if you only have one day, I highly recommend the Grove of the Patriarchs and the area around the Paradise Visitor’s Center. Some of the best hikes in Rainier National Park include the Grove of the Patriarchs, an easy 1.5-mile trail from the Stevens Canyon Entrance Station. You walk through ancient trees and across a suspension bridge. Paradise has beautiful wildflowers, views of Mount Rainier, and tons of trails.
Another great place to explore next to the park is Crystal Mountain where you can stay in a variety of accommodations. They have a gondola which takes you to see incredible views of Mount Rainier.
