10 Best Hoka Walking Shoes For Amazing Comfort

Last Updated on March 11, 2024 by Nicole

Hoka footwear or to use the full name “Hoka One One” set up shop in France in 2009. That makes this footwear manufacturer one of the newer entries into the enormous athletic footwear market. The Hoka One One name is pronounced as “ho-ka-on-ey-one-ey” and resembles a Maori phrase that means “to fly over the earth”. Their signature style is massive midsoles and an incredibly light shoe – their goal is to make you feel like you are running or walking on clouds. When you want cushioning, stability and enhanced forward motion, Hoka Walking Shoes supply them all.

What Do You Get With The Best Hoka Walking Shoes?

The following section gets a little geeky and describes some of the cool and distinctive footwear technology that Hoka One One incorporates into their best walking shoes. If you would prefer to start reviewing individual shoes, then I would recommend skipping this section and head down to “How These Reviews Are Organized”.

The best Hoka walking shoes include significant footwear technology for comfort, stability and support. The three key features unique to Hoka One One are:

  1. Use of EVA foam in midsole.
  2. Midsole stability.
  3. Meta-rockers for forward propulsion.

EVA Foam in the Midsole: Massive but Light

All the Hoka walking shoes have a substantial EVA foam layer for a bouncy, plush feeling underfoot. Hoka’s proprietary blend of EVA foam with rubber gives elasticity, energy return, and more durability, giving you more miles from your shoes.

A recent development is a ProFly™ layer. ProFly is a system for strategic placement of soft foam in the heel for shock absorption and firmer foam in the forefoot for a bouncier toe push off with some energy return.

Some Hoka walking shoes also use a “J” frame in the midsole that involves the strategic placement of firm foam. This time the denser cushioning is in the forefoot, then continues in a strip down the inside of your foot where it finally curves around the heel – giving a “J” shape. This strategic placement of firm foam suppresses overpronation (the tendency for your foot to roll inward while walking which may lead to sore ankles, knees and hips) and subtly nudges you into the optimum walking gait. The Hoka Arahi, Hoka Gaviota and Hoka Elevon ranges (see below) use a J-frame.

Twisting in the Mid-foot

Most shoe manufacturers use a shank to provide rigidity in the mid-foot. For optimum walking, running, or any other activity, you want to avoid twisting in this part of your foot while also supplying flexibility in the toe area to promote a natural forward motion. Except for the Hoka One One Carbon X range which uses a carbon fiber plate, Hoka walking shoes do not include a shank. Rather, strategic placement of firmer foam and “flat waist geometry” with a broader foot platform gives an inherently stable shoe.

Flat waist geometry is Hoka’s term for constructing shoes on a straight Last. A Last is to shoemakers what a mannikin is to tailors and dressmakers. It is a shoe form (typically in metal or wood) representing a specific size and shape of foot. Every foot size and width fitting requires a unique Last to shape and fit the shoe. Lasts can be straight, semi-curved, or curved.

Today, Lasts for high tech running shoes usually feature a curved last with a pronounced “waist” in the midfoot.  Hoka One One creates some of their Hoka walking shoes with a straight Last, replacing the curved Last. A straight last produces a shoe with more support under your arches and is an inherently more stable shoe. Running is an inherently unstable activity and benefits from curved geometry for speed. However, walkers prefer stability over speed in most cases.

Early-Stage Meta-Rockers

Hoka walking shoes were innovators by using an early meta rocker close to the foot’s ball to give you a little “push” in transitioning faster from the heel through to toe-off. When your shoe promotes movement from heel to toe, you put in less energy in accomplishing your stride. Research indicates that the rocker technology found in Hoka walking shoes relieve some painful foot conditions, such as arthritis in the toes, and also reduce walking fatigue.

Most athletic and active sneaker style shoes incorporate a toe rocker, and many are following Hoka’s lead in using an early meta rocker.

New Developments For The Best Hoka Walking Shoes

In common with other footwear manufacturers, Hoka continues to tweak their shoe ranges to improve performance. The latest innovations include:

  • Ditching the heel loop in favor of an elf tag as part of the collar for easy pulling on and off.
  • Redesign the collar to promote better performance and less irritation around your Achilles.
  • Engineered mesh with no seams and better breathability.
  • Tweaks to the tongue with ventilation notches, asymmetric designs, or tongueless shoes.
  • Adding high abrasion rubber to strategic zones on the outsole to improve durability.
  • Improvements to cushioning and adding memory foam to the collar.
  • Removable EVA sock liner.

Most of these innovations benefit walkers with fresh feet, more comfort, and fewer hot spots inside the shoe from rubbing.

How These Reviews are Organized

Hoka walking shoes are unisex, and both genders receive the same technology and styling options. However, it can be challenging to find Hoka One walking shoes in your size. Accordingly, each Hoka walking shoe review (except the Hoka Bondi SR) suggests an alternative manufacturer’s shoe. Hoka One One is launching upgrades to most of their ranges, so the reviews discuss the latest model where it is available and the changes compared with earlier models.

Other Options

Hoka One One also has a range of hiking boots and shoes with the same incredible footwear technology and other innovations for superior traction for difficult terrain. Accordingly, if you think that your walks might turn into hikes over uneven or tricky terrain, you should take a look at the design developments of these Hoka hiking shoes:

Availability continues to be a challenge so other options are highlighted side-by-side with the Hoka One walking shoes.

Best Hoka Walking Shoes

Hoka Bondi 7: The Most Cushioned Hoka Walking Shoes (Ideal For Distance)

Hoka Bondi 7 For Men

Hoka Bondi

Hoka Bondi 7 For Women

Hoka bondi

Best Features

  • Breathable engineered mesh upper.
  • Memory foam collar for cushioned comfortable ankles.
  • Ultrasoft memory foam.
  • TPU overlays add structure and support to the crucial midfoot area.
  • Compression molded, full-length EVA midsole.
  • Early-stage meta rocker for a faster transition.
  • Internal heel counter locks the heel in position.
  • Thick Ortholite foam insole over a perforated Strobel lining.
  • Flat laces for a comfortable fit.
  • Tongue is not gusseted but has broad wings to keep out debris.
  • Durable rubber outsole with blown rubber in high wear areas.
  • Wide foot base – very stable at every angle of foot strike.
  • Thin reflective strips on heels.
  • Vegan friendly.

Conclusion

Hoka Bondi 7 is plush and comfortable, and the design accommodates a narrower heel. The main difference between the Hoka Bondi 7 and the earlier Hoka Bondi 6 is the additional memory foam padding in the ankle collar and a new upper. The midsole and the outsole are the same technology and design. Hoka Bondi 7 is really a minor update to the Hoka One One Bondi 6, so if you find it hard to get hold off or overpriced, you don’t lose very much by opting for the Hoka Bondi 6 while stocks last.

The midsole is stiff and has minimal flexibility (yet the shoe still maintains an overall soft comfortable feel). In some cases, this is a distinct advantage for foot support and helps the early-stage meta-rocker work as designed to transition your foot smoothly from heel to toe. If you prefer cushioning and an easy gliding walk on roads and light trails, these Hoka walking shoes will help you bounce through the day.

If you can’t get hold of the Hoka Bondi 7, as I said earlier, the Hoka One One Bondi 6 has many of the same features. In addition, Hoka One One Clifton 7 (see below) or Hoka Clifton 6 could also be alternative Hoka walking shoes. Similar cushioned shoes to the Hoka Bondi range include Asics Gel-Nimbus 23.

ASICS Gel Nimbus 23 For Men

Hoka bondi

ASICS Gel Nimbus 23 For Women

hoka bondi

Overview

Asics provide the same high stack and cushioned footbed experience as Hoka Bondi 6 or Hoka Bondi 7 with strategic gel patches in the midsole and energy-returning proprietary FlyteFoam. The Ortholite sock liner provides all-round cushioning, and the engineered mesh upper gives you a stylish upper with excellent breathability. These are not Hoka walking shoes, but they will provide you with that feeling of walking on clouds – Nimbus Clouds.

Hoka One One Clifton 7: Lightweight And Soft Hoka Walking Shoes

Hoka One One Clifton 7 For Men

hoka one one clifton 7

Hoka One One Clifton 7 For Women

hoka one one clifton 7

Best Features

  • Engineered mesh upper for breathable comfort.
  • Mesh gusset keeps the tongue in optimal placement.
  • Durable reinforced eyelets.
  • Heel loop replaced by a redesigned collar tab for durable pull-on and off support.
  • Early-stage meta rocker.
  • Signature cushioning with full compression-molded EVA midsole.
  • Moderate heel bevel.
  • Stability increased with flat-waisted geometry for stability.
  • Excellent ground contact.
  • Strategic high abrasion rubber zones on the outsole improve durability without adding weight.
  • Flat laces for foot-fitting comfort.
  • 5mm drop from heel to toe.
  • Vegan friendly.

Conclusion

The upgrades and differences between the Hoka One One Clifton 7 and Hoka Clifton 6 (men) are minor – redesigned upper with an open-engineered sandwich mesh to improve foot-hugging breathability. The heavy overlays providing structural reinforcement in Hoka Clifton 6 (women) are now lighter but no less effective 3D overlays. An elf-style pull tab in the redesigned collar replaces the heel loop. Everything else in the midsole and durable rubber outsole is the same.

Comparing Hoka One One Clifton 7 with Hoka Bondi 7 – you pay less for pretty much the same Hoka One Walking shoes, so if you like to save a little bit of money, opt for these instead of the Hoka Bondi 7.

If you find it challenging to get hold of a Hoka One One Clifton 7 in your size, you can opt for New Balance Fresh Foam Beacon V3, which has similar styling and features.

New Balance Men’s Fresh Foam Beacon V3 For Men

New Balance Men’s Fresh Foam Beacon V3 For Women

hoka walking shoes

Overview

The styling is remarkably similar between New Balance Beacon V3 and Hoka One One Clifton 7. Both feature the elf tag instead of a heel loop and a maximalist midsole. Again both use strategic durable rubber placement to improve abrasion resistance on the outsole. The engineered mesh uppers are breathable and fresh, and the laces are flat for comfortable fitting across the top of the foot. The significant difference is that New Balance Beacon V3 provides more reinforcement around the heel which is a stability bonus for most walkers.

Hoka Arahi 4: The Stability Trainer In Hoka Walking Shoes

Hoka Arahi 4 For Men

Hoka arahi

Hoka Arahi 4 For Women

hoka arahi

Best Features

  • Lower neutral heel (5mm drop from heel to toe) as part of the styling.
  • Excellent cushioning with a wide footbed.
  • J-Frame technology for stability and control of overpronation.
  • Denser foam in the midfoot extending to heel wrapping for increased stability.
  • High abrasion rubber for a durable outsole.
  • Engineered one-piece mesh upper – more breathable and fewer rubbing points.
  • Early meta rocker geometry.
  • Vegan friendly.

Hoka Arahi 5

The Hoka One One Arahi 5 (women) (men) just launched. The differences are:

  • A redesigned collar section assists in easy pull-on and off – the new look elf collar replaces the heel loop.
  • Redesigned upper structured mesh around the heel and more breathable mesh in the toe box.
  • Redefined collar relieves pressure on Achilles.
  • Firmer EVA J-frame for an increase in stability and support.

Conclusion

Although there is a later version available, if you are looking for comfortable, stable Hoka One walking shoes, Hoka Arahi 4 still ticks all the boxes. It has a soft, flexible upper that is comfortable and breathable. In addition, an internal heel counter keeps your foot snuggly in the correct position for a natural gait if you choose to run or walk.

Hoka doesn’t use the midsole shank technology for midfoot support against twisting, but they use a firmer composite foam to provide more rigidity. Many runners remark that the midsole’s firmness combined with the low 5mm heel drop takes some getting used to, but these factors make for reliable, comfortable Hoka walking shoes.

The breathable mesh upper is light, and it isn’t waterproof. It does dry quickly, but you don’t want to go splashing through puddles or walking in torrential rain. The stability features help correct problems with overpronation, but these are equally good Hoka walking shoes for neutral walkers.

Hoka Arahi is an excellent stability shoe. Still, if you can’t get your hands on this, you can get similar performance to these Hoka walking shoes with Saucony Omni providing support and cushioning.

Saucony Omni 19 For Men

hoka walking shoes

Saucony Omni 19 For Women

hoka walking shoes

Overview

Saucony Omni 19 is a revamped stability running shoe that is an ideal alternative to Hoka Arahi with some neat features to improve the flexibility of the tread – soft blown rubber with a strategic firmer rubber mirroring the medial post in the midsole. Why does that matter? Combine the strategic rubber with a flexible groove, and you have an outsole that promotes a natural gait. A natural stride cuts out all those tricky potential problems with your feet and reduces fatigue on your legs and feet. A new foam compound (PWRRU) is bouncy and light with the cushioned ride you expect from Hoka walking shoes. Plus, you will pay a lot less for these shoes for pretty much the same performance.

Hoka Gaviota 2: Balanced Stability Shoe

Hoka Gaviota 2 For Men

hoka gaviota

Hoka Gaviota 2 For Women

hoka gaviota 2

Best Features

  • J-Frame for stability in the upper.
  • Engineered mesh for comfort and breathability.
  • Vegan friendly
  • More cushioned than the Hoka Arahi.
  • RMAT midsole – rubber and EVA combination – giving less weight for more cushioning.
  • Denser rubber on high wear areas on the outsole.
  • Arch lock wings to provide more support and stability.
  • More stable midfoot with a late-stage meta rocker.

Conclusion

The Hoka Gaviota 3 is a later model, not widely available yet, includes a few more millimeters of underfoot cushioning and is about half an ounce heavier. These Hoka One walking shoes retain the heel loop in the upgraded model rather than replacing it with an elf tag as part of the collar.

The Hoka Gaviota 2 is essentially the same shoe as the Hoka Gaviota 3 with minor tweaks. Despite the large platform appearance, these Hoka One walking shoes are light to wear and comfortable. The J frame technology acts to subtly correct overpronation by using denser foam zones to push your foot into alignment while you are walking. The meta rocker in the Gaviota is closer to the toes giving you an enhanced toe-off that some walkers prefer to the early stage meta rocker that transitions your foot closer to the ball of the foot. These Hoka walking shoes are plush, comfortable platforms that keep your feet comfortable while exploring cobbled walkways, and they are super-stable.

The Hoka Gaviota range is similar to the Hoka Arahi in providing cushioning with stability features. If both are challenging to get in your size, then a good substitute is the competing Brooks Beast 20 (men) or Brooks Ariel 20 (women).

Brooks Beast 20 For Men

hoka walking shoes

Overview

The downside to these alternative Hoka One walking shoes is the weight – the Beast is a bit heavier, but that is more of a problem for runners, not walkers. The midsole has a new eco-friendly foam -BioMoGo, which gives you superior cushioning and energy return. Brooks includes a missing feature from the Hoka Gaviota, and most other running and walking shoes – “guard rails.” These support the edge of the foot and protect your knees by subtly correcting your stride. These are excellent for walking on hard surfaces and more challenging terrains.

Brooks Ariel 20 For Women

hoka walking shoes

Overview

Brooks Ariel gives many of the same features as the Beast – superior cushioning (BioMoGo) and guard rails but in a less “beastly” form for women’s feet. The engineered mesh is breathable and form-fitting. The design suits overpronators with plenty of cushioned support to correct your gait. It is the woman’s equivalent to the Beast and a super-comfortable walking shoe.

  • Lining material uses Gore-Tex for waterproofing with breathability.
  • Redesigned eyelets for a secure fit.

  • Wider forefoot – stability and fit.
  • Vibram® Megagrip rubber outsole – better traction in both wet and dry conditions.
  • 5mm tread in the outsole.
  • Additional rubber in strategic zones for stability and support in action.
  • Neutral heel with a 4mm drop.
  • Vegan friendly.

Conclusion

The latest Hoka Speedgoat 4 trail runner provides an excellent pair of Hoka walking shoes if you prefer to get off the beaten track and walk in rough, rocky, and wet areas – you get cushioning and superior grip with a Vibram outsole. These stand out as superior Hoka One Walking shoes because of the Vibram outsole and the weatherproofing making them more suitable for walks in wetter weather and more challenging terrains. The colors are vibrant, and the cushioning is plentiful, which helps if you want to cover long distance walks in your leisure time.

An alternative trail running shoe for walkers, if you cannot get hold of these Hoka One walking shoes, is the Saucony Peregrine 11.

Overview

Instead of Vibram MegaGrip, Saucony gives you PWRTRAC tacky rubber to give you superior traction on varied terrains.  The cushioning comes from PWRRUN, and you get a rock plate for additional underfoot protection against rocks and branches. Extra padding in the toe and heel area and a better lacing system gives you a cushioned trail runner as an alternative to the Hoka Speedgoat.

Hoka One One Elevon 2: Excellent Shock Absorption For Heel Strike

Hoka One One Elevon 2 For Women

hoka speedgoat 4

Best Features

  • Engineered mesh upper – lightweight with excellent performance.
  • Individual fit with anatomical internal support wings.
  • Asymmetrical tongue with additional cutouts to enhance breathability.
  • PROFLY layer in the upper midsole – improves toe-off and is shock-absorbing.

  • Improved support with a deeper active foot frame in the midsole.
  • Increased flexibility in the forefoot with strategic grooving.
  • Softer cushioning.
  • Removable insole.
  • 5mm heel drop.
  • Vegan

Conclusion

The upgrade to these Hoka walking shoes includes a further extension to the heel, providing more cushioning for the heel strike. Where walkers differ from runners is in the heel’s action, consistently striking the ground as the first point of impact. The internal support wings help you adjust the fit to your heel, and the asymmetrical tongue combines with this feature to provide a locked-in feeling for your foot. If you are not used to the snug second skin fitting in your walking shoes, this may surprise you. These shoes encourage a slower running pace which interestingly makes them ideal Hoka One walking shoes.

The upgrades concentrate on improved breathability (so your feet stay fresh), cushioning and enhanced fit.

These Hoka One walking shoes aim to suit the needs of Medical professionals and service industry workers who both spend long hours walking around on hard surfaces. These Hoka walking shoes feature the signature cushioned platform but in a more work-friendly upper.

The leather upper is super-easy to maintain and provides a good level of water resistance, ideal for walking in a changeable climate. The anti-slip rubber gives you confidence in keeping your grip on tricky surfaces, and you still get plenty of cushioning to improve comfort and reduce fatigue.

These are Hoka One’s working shoes, and the closest equivalent to standard workwear with slip-resistant soles. The Hoka One One selling point is the superior cushioning.

Looking for an alternative? The most comparable shoe to these Hoka walking shoes is the Reebok Forever Floatride Energy 2.

Reebok Forever Floatride Energy 2 For Men

Reebok Forever Floatride Energy 2 For Women

Overview

The overall appearance is startlingly similar, but the Reebok alternative will cost you half the Hoka price. The carbon-rubber outsole gives excellent traction and durability. The midsole is lightweight Floatride foam and cushions the heel (29mm) and toes (19mm). The heel-to-toe drop is higher than Hoka at 10mm. A slight flaring in the heel improves stability.

Best Features

  • Engineered mesh with ventilation and a gusseted tongue to keep everything in place.
  • Embroidery reinforcement in the heel area.
  • Early-stage meta rocker.
  • Stiff carbon fiber plate in the midsole shaped like a Y giving flexible panels in the forefoot.
  • PROFLY layer in the upper midsole – improves toe-off and is shock-absorbing.
  • Flat, comfortable laces.

Hoka One One Carbon 2X

Hoka One One Carbon 2X revamps the Hoka One One Carbon X but is currently limited in supply. The upgrades include:

  • A more aggressive meta rocker.
  • An elf tag instead of a heel loop.
  • Engineered mesh with greater breathability.
  • Collar construction that is anatomically correct for your Achilles.

Conclusion

If you are a power walker, the more aggressive meta rocker of the Hoka One One Carbon X may suit your walking style, but it is probably overkill for the casual walker.

Nike Vapor Fly piloted a carbon fiber plate, and many shoe manufacturers produce at least one running shoe with a carbon fiber plate, and the Carbon X is Hoka’s model. Sole rigidity divides opinions. One camp points out that it pushes your foot into adopting a natural transition and others say that a foot naturally rolls through from heel to toe. Most people in developed countries benefit from supportive shoes and encourage a natural gait by correcting bad walking habits. Carbon fiber plates combined with responsive foam improve energy return for runners and walkers.  You don’t have to have a carbon fiber plate in your Hoka walking shoes, but many people enjoy the ride with Hoka One One Carbon X.

The Nike Zoom fly was one of the first to use carbon fiber plates for midsole rigidity, and if you cannot get ahold of the Hoka One One Carbon X, it is an excellent alternative.
