Whether you crave a fun July holiday in the United States in a city or a town, or a relaxing July getaway lounging at the beach or exploring nature, there is a lot from which to choose. I have asked some of the best travel bloggers for their recommendations for the best places to visit in the USA in July. Each of them highlights what makes these summer vacations a fantastic choice, the best things to do, expected weather and how best to reach it.
If there are annual events or festivals that could make it an even more special destination in July, then those are mentioned. In addition, if someone stayed at or knows of a fabulous hotel, it has been included.
Big Sur, California
Big Sur is one of California’s most picturesque destinations. This western region of the United States (which spans over approximately 70 miles of the state’s central coast) is an amazing place to visit for anyone who loves hiking, exploring beaches, and generally being outdoors. It is one of the best places to visit in the USA in July.
What makes Big Sur a great place to visit in the middle of the summer is the possibility of seeing humpback and blue whales. While you may spot them anywhere along the coast, a particularly great area to see humpback whales is around Partington Cove.
There are a ton of other great things to do in Big Sur, but one of the most iconic spots that you can’t miss is Bixby Bridge. This concrete bridge – which you can see from Castle Rock Viewpoint located right off Highway 1 – dates back to the 1930s, and is the tallest of its kind.
Another fantastic destination is McWay Falls, a beautiful waterfall that crashes right into the beach. While you can’t go down to the beach, there’s a short, easy trail that leads you to an overlook. You can get some of the best views of the falls from there.

What makes Big Sur such a great destination to visit in July is the weather. Daytime temperatures tend to hit the mid to high 70s during the day, and then drop as low as the low 50s in the evenings. Rain is also incredibly rare in July.
Keep in mind that, while the worst of the summer coastal fog tends to happen in June, you may still experience some fog in the mornings and in the early evenings. That said, it is usually gone by the afternoon.

For those flying, the closest international airport is San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC). It will take you approximately an hour and a half to two hours to drive from the airport to the north end of Big Sur. A car is an absolute must in Big Sur.

Glacier National Park, Montana

Seward, Alaska
Seward is a small Alaskan town that acts as a gateway to both mountain and sea adventures. Not only is there a lot of outdoor adventure, but the town is full of colorful murals and has some great restaurants. It makes for a fantastic stop on an Alaskan road trip and an amazing July getaway in the USA.
One of the best things to do in Seward is explore Kenai Fjords National Park. Most of the National Park is only accessible by water, but there are some wonderful hikes on the land portion.
A hike to see Exit Glacier is a must. Unfortunately, the glacier is receding at an alarming pace. Look out for the dated signs leading up to its present location to appreciate the changes.
If you’re up for a longer and more strenuous trail, you can also hike up to the Harding Icefield.
To see Kenai Fjords from the water, take a boat tour that gives you a chance to see whales, puffins and more. You also have the option to take a kayaking excursion where you’ll paddle next to a massive glacier and enjoy it from a different perspective.
Other great things to do in Seward include taking a helicopter ride for views from above, going on a fishing charter and visiting the Alaska Sealife Center, which rehabilitates local wildlife.
Seward is accessible year-round, but summer is when most people visit for mild weather and outdoor recreation. One exciting event that takes place in July is the Mount Marathon Race. It’s regarded as one of the most difficult short-distance mountain races in the world and people visit from all over to watch the race and celebrate Independence Day.

To reach Seward, you’ll want to fly into the Anchorage International Airport. You can either rent a car and drive 2.5 hours south, or take the Alaska Railroad. While the railroad is a unique experience, you’ll have more freedom if you rent a car.

The waves are much calmer in the summer, so it’s a fantastic time to check out some of Hawaii’s world-famous beaches, go snorkeling or diving, and enjoy the island’s beauty.
The Big Island is the youngest and largest of the Hawaiian Islands, offering some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and many activities for everyone to enjoy.
Some of the best things to do on the island include night snorkeling with manta rays in Kona. Imagine swimming with these majestic creatures as they gracefully glide through the water. This is a unique experience not offered in most places around the world, and it’s a bucket list item that should not be missed.
Kealakekua Bay is another excellent place to snorkel on the island. With its crystal clear waters and abundant sea life, it’s the perfect spot to explore Hawaii’s marine life.
Aside from the island’s underwater adventures, watching the sunset or sunrise from Mauna Kea offers a spectacular sight. At a towering elevation of 13,796 feet, this dormant volcano is the tallest mountain in the world if measured from its base on the ocean floor.

The drive from the airport to Kona takes about 17 minutes. The drive from Kona to Hilo is very scenic and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Renting a car is the best way to get around the island.

New York City, New York

Discover Hudson Yards where you will find top attractions, including the Edge Observation Deck, the Vessel, the High Line, and luxury shopping.
The Edge is the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. It’s suspended in mid-air and gives 360-degree views of New York City and beyond. For something extra special, you should plan a visit to the Edge for sunset to enjoy some of the best summer sunset views over Manhattan.
Walking the High Line, an elevated greenway, is certainly a highlight when visiting NYC in July. Afterwards you can do some epic shopping at fabulous stores inside the mall at Hudson Yards.
If you’re visiting on the 4th of July, you can feel like a local by going to Coney Island to see the fireworks show. A good NYC tip and reminder is to make sure that you explore the other boroughs outside of Manhattan, like Coney Island, DUMBO just over the Brooklyn Bridge (here are tips for walking over the Brooklyn Bridge) or Williamsburg for Smorgasburg, an exciting food festival that is very popular during the summer months.

You can fly into JFK, Newark, or LGA airports, all of which have public transportation to Manhattan, or you can take a cab. You should arrive within one hour, depending on traffic and the airport.

Black Hills, South Dakota
The Black Hills of South Dakota is a region in the midwest full of natural beauty and wild west history. It makes for a wonderful destination for a July road trip. Make sure to include Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave National Park into your itinerary.
An iconic stop for any American road trip, Mt. Rushmore truly is impressive. While visiting, take time to walk the trail to get closer to the base of the monument, visit the small museum, and consider grabbing an ice cream cone with ice cream made using Thomas Jefferson’s personal recipe. If you have the time, try to come back and see the monument at night – it is quite impressive.
Nearby Custer State Park is a true gem. You can spend several days here, or just drive through stopping by Sylvan Lake, exploring the Needles region, or driving the wildlife loop in search of bison.
Lastly, make time to visit Wind Cave National Park – one of the oldest American national parks, and the first created to preserve a cave system. Its unique geology includes abundant box work and other cave formations such as frostwork and cave popcorn, which are sure to impress.
Wind Cave offers tours for a variety of travelers, including families, those with disabilities, and visitors looking for more adventurous exploration, but be sure to book in advance, if at all possible.
A trip in July around Independence Day can be a fun experience when visiting Mount Rushmore and its impressive presidents. If traveling near the end of the month, consider extending your trip into August for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. That begins on the first Friday in August.

The closest international airport to Rapid City is Denver which is an six hours away. However, Rapid City has its own regional airport with regular flights from a variety of major cities including Denver, Minneapolis, and Dallas/Fort Worth.
A car rental is recommended to allow the greatest flexibility, but tour operators also offer a variety of excursions that include transportation.

If you’re looking for an outdoorsy destination on the west coast of America in July, there’s arguably no better place than Washington state’s Mount Rainier National Park. After a long and cold winter, most of the Park’s trails finally become accessible this month, as the summer sun melts the stubborn ice and snow away and in its place, fields of technicolor wildflowers emerge.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Temperatures in Acadia in July range from a high of 76°F/24°C to a low of 55°F/13°C at night. The sea temperature is around 56°F/14°C making swimming chilly but possible. Sand Beach is an excellent place for the whole family to play in the waves.

Located at the border of Arizona and Utah, this gorgeous lake is actually a human-made reservoir created by the Glen Canyon Dam. The lake is surrounded by tall red canyon walls and has almost 100 side canyons that feed into the lake, creating a remarkably unique landscape.
