Some of us are thrilled with this kind of blistering heat while others dream about cool breezes and destinations with mild temperatures. If you wish for cooler summer temperatures, is there anywhere in Europe that you can go? Absolutely! Here are 24 of the best places to visit in Europe for mild summer weather.

Bruges, Belgium
By Mal from Raw Mal Roams
With mild temperature and plenty of sunshine, Bruges is one of the best places to visit in June, July and August when other destinations in Europe are experiencing extreme summer heat. Bruges is also a very compact city with all its major attractions and historical sites close together. This makes it an excellent city to leisurely explore on foot.
Take a walking tour and explore the city from its main square, the Markt, which is surrounded by colourful townhouses with iconic triangular stepped gable roofs for which Bruges is known. Climb up the 300 stairs of the Belfry tower for epic views of the city. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and dates back to the 13th century.
For a different perspective of Bruges, book a boat tour through its picturesque canals, including one of the most beautiful spots in Bruges, the Quay of the Rosary Viewpoint.
Bruges is also a great city for foodies, with many excellent restaurants serving Belgian and French cuisine. Try De Gastro restaurant, a family owned restaurant with relaxed ambiance or the Park Restaurant, for a more sophisticated and romantic meal.
A visit to Bruges would not be complete without sampling delicious Belgian waffles served with your choice of fruits, chocolate and whipped cream. And, if you want to taste an original Belgian hot chocolate, visit the Old Chocolate House. You won’t go hungry in this incredible city.
If you want to try all of the best Belgian foods, then book a food tour.
Weather
In the summer months, the weather in Belgium is very mild, with daily high temperature not exceeding 70 degrees Fahrenheit. There is little to no humidity.
How Best To Reach Destination
Bruges International Airport is situated 33 km away from the city, and it’s well connected by public transport. However, the airport is small and only connects with a few international destinations. Accordingly, if you can’t find a convenient flight, try Brussels airport which is 70 miles (112 km) away and has good train connections.
Hotel Recommendation
Mal says, “A great place to base yourself in the city is Hotel Bourgoensch Hof, situated right in the heart of the historic centre of Bruges, a few minutes walk from the main square and overlooking a picturesque canal.
Booking.comLake Como, Italy
By Paula from Truly Expat
Europe in summer can be hot, especially when you would like to spend hours in the sun exploring. However, Lake Como is one of the best places to visit in Europe for cooler summer temperatures. Better yet, it offers everything for which you hope on a vacation to Italy.
There is so much to do in this beautiful part of Italy. First, consider hiking in the surrounding mountains. They are covered with snow during winter, but they are spectacularly beautiful and green during this time of year. A hike from Como to Cernobbio 6.2 mi (10 km) or to Monte Bisbino 13.6 mi (21.9 km looped trail) are great options.
If you plan on staying in Menaggio, you can hike through the Parco Val Sanagra region (Val Sanagra Park), where the walks are easy and take approximately an hour each to complete.
Alternatively, if you would like to hike your way to Brunate, it is about a 2.6 mi (4.3 km) walk. This is a steep path, but the views are breathtaking. You will be able to walk off those long lunches that you have enjoyed.
If you love a view but don’t wish to hike, then take the funicular from Como. Enjoy a relaxed long lunch eating traditional favorites at Trattoria dei Bracconieri, rich in hundred year old Italian history.
Alternatively, spend a day on the water by taking a boat and touring other towns like Menaggio or Bellagio. These stunning lakeside towns all have something different to offer.
Spend the day at Lido Menaggio, a sort of beach club, where you will find a beach with golden sand. Explore Menaggio by hiring a bike and checking out the beaches along the river. Make ensure you visit Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo as the botanical gardens are beautiful.
Bellagio, the pearl of Lake Como, is based on the other side of the lake. Bellagio is known for its remarkable riverside villas, each one more extravagant than the other. Visit Villa Serbelloni or Villa Melzi for a real feel of what this beautiful part of the world is all about.
Weather
Summer weather in Lake Como is perfect as it can range from a lovely cool 60 degrees at night to a perfect 79 degrees during the day. You can expect some humidity but hardly any in June and less than 20% of the time during July and August.
How Best To Reach Destination
Getting to Lake Como is easy as you have three airports from which choose. Malpensa airport (the primary international airport), Milan Bergamo airport (caters to budget airlines) and Linate airport (if you are flying in from somewhere in Italy) are all under 2 hours away. Rent a car and enjoy the scenery.
Hotel Recommendation
Paula says, “The main town in the area is Como where there are plenty of places to stay, ranging from pensiones to boutique style hotels. However, if you are after the whole Italian experience, you can not go past Vista Palazza. This beautiful historic hotel is ideally located right on the waterfront.”
Booking.comTriglav National Park, Slovenia
By Heather from Conversant Traveller
Slovenia is one of the best destinations to visit in Europe to avoid extreme summer temperatures. The weather is usually warm and sunny with clear skies and little rain. However, it doesn’t experience the soaring temperatures of many of its European counterparts.
If you really want to escape the heat, then head to Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps and keep cool while exploring the mountains, lakes, and valleys.
One of the best things to do is drive the Vrsic Pass. The precipitous switchback hairpins are easy to negotiate if you take it slow, and the views out across the flower meadows and lofty alpine peaks are stunning. Make sure you stop at the beautiful wooden Russian church which was built by prisoners of war in 1917 as a memorial to their comrades.
Other noteworthy activities in Triglav National Park are kayaking or canyoning on the turquoise Soca River, one of the most photogenic features in the area.
For something a little less energetic, head to Lake Bohinj or Lake Triglav. Try stand up paddle boarding, or just go for a swim.
Weather
Temperatures in Triglav average around 68˚F during summer. If you plan to hike, the higher you head into the mountains, the cooler it will be.
How Best To Reach Destination
The easiest way to reach the Triglav National Park is to fly into Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and hire a car. You may want to spend a day or two exploring Ljubljana as there is lots of things to do. It’s only a 60-mile drive to reach Triglav, although you might want to stop off to explore Lake Bled on the way.
Alternatively, you can take a day tour to Triglav National Park from Ljubljana.
Both Ljubljana and Lake Bled offer lovely temperatures in summer. The average high is around 80oF without humidity.
Hotel Recommendation
Heather says, “Once in the Park, good places to base yourself are the Jasna Chalet Resort in Kranjska Gora or the Boutique Hotel Dobra Vila in Bovec.”
Booking.comKrakow, Poland
By Tal from Bright Nomad
Krakow, Poland is one of the best cities to travel to in Europe to beat blistering summer heat. It is also a lovely city that’s well worth discovering.
The best way to get to know Krakow is by taking a walking guided tour. There are many different guided tours in Krakow that will teach you about its harsh and fascinating history, but also introduce you to the different parts of the city. The Old Town with its massive main square and the Jewish Quarter with its hipster vibes are each beautiful and fascinating parts of Krakow to explore.
In summer, the banks of the Vistula River are full of locals and tourists hanging out on the grass or strolling along the river. The feel is vibrant and the scenery is delightful. In the evening, you can also enjoy the scenery on an evening boat cruise.
As you walk along the river, you’ll see Krakow’s most famous and iconic landmark – Wawel Castle – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s plenty to see in the Castle, the adjacent Cathedral and the beautiful gardens. If you have time, you can easily spend half a day there. Book your tickets in advance to avoid standing in line.
Weather
The summers in Krakow are comfortable, with an average high temperature between 72°F and 75 °F in June, July and August. You may experience the occasional rainy day, but the weather is generally very pleasant with practically no humidity.
How Best To Reach Destination
Krakow’s international airport is called John Paul II International Airport Kraków – Balice. Getting from the airport to the city takes about 20-30 minutes. You can take public transport (there are frequent and affordable buses and trains) or rent a car and drive.
Hotel Recommendation
Tal says, “For a convenient stay, I can recommend Hotel Legend in Krakow, located near Planty Park. It’s within a short walking distance from all the popular areas of the city: The Old Town, the Jewish Quarter and Wawel Castle.
Booking.comWicklow National Park, Ireland
By Mary from Be Right Back
The Wicklow Mountains National park is a gorgeous park located in County Wicklow, just one hour drive from Dublin, Ireland’s capital. It’s a heaven for anyone who loves the outdoors, hiking, discovering waterfalls and learning about history. It is also one of the best European destinations to go to avoid extreme summer heat.
There are lots of things to do in Wicklow Mountains National Park. Some of the highlights include the Upper lake and Lough Ouler. The Upper Lake is located at the heart of the National Park and is a favorite weekend destination for locals from Dublin. The lake is surrounded by green tall mountains and features a nice beach where you can swim in the sun. The view is absolutely beautiful and worth a visit.
If you’re feeling adventurous, take on the White Spinc hike which takes you to the Poulanass Waterfall, down the Glenealo Valley and ends at the Upper lake.
Lough Ouler is another unmissable visit while in the Wicklow Mountains. It is a heart-shaped lake located on the side of the Tonelagee Mountain. It is accessible through a rough muddy path but is worth every minute of your effort. You are rewarded by an incredible (and windy) view of the heart!
Visiting the Powerscourt Distillery or the Glendalough Cathedral are also great options, especially on rainy days. And of course, with only an hours drive to Dublin, you have an easy day trip for more incredible things to do.
Alternatively, if you prefer to stay in Dublin, you can book a one day tour to explore the area and let someone else worry about the driving.
Weather
Although Wicklow National Park can get quite a few sunny days during summer, temperatures usually average between 60°F to 70°F which makes it a great destination if you’re not a big fan of hot or humid summer days.
Ireland being Ireland, the weather can be quite unpredictable and change rapidly. Always bring a packable rain jacket even if the sky is blue and the sun is shining when you head outdoors.
How Best To Reach Destination
The best way to get to the National Park is to fly into Dublin’s airport (DUB) and rent a car. From there, Wicklow NP is about an hour drive (on the left side of the road). The drive is easy as it is mostly on the highway.
Hotel Recommendation
Mary says, “For a full immersion in the park, stay at the Cleevaun Cabin. To experience pub life, hotels in Blessington or Bray are popular too!”

Booking.comLauterbrunnen, Switzerland
By Jennifer from Family Trip Guides
Switzerland is one of the best European countries to escape the blistering heat of southern Europe. In particular, the village of Lauterbrunnen offers lovely summer temperatures and a stunning place to explore.
This quaint town inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s Rivendell in Lord of the Rings because of its 72 waterfalls. It is surrounded by mountains on 3 sides and retains a quaint village feel but with all the necessities for an enjoyable vacation.
The main attraction is the Alps and the waterfalls at every turn! There are so many options to explore the outside beauty from taking a train to the Jungfraujoch (the Top of Europe) to taking a separate gondola to the Shilthorn where a 007 Bond movie was filmed.
You can also walk along an alpine river in the valley and explore waterfalls inside the mountain at Trummelbach Falls. For the more adventurous, paragliding is very popular here.

Booking.comCornwall, England
By Lavina from Continent Hop
Cornwall is quite a popular spot to visit in England because it is one of the places that receives the most sunlight in England. With partially cloudy days, this translates into pleasant temperatures for most of summer. Accordingly, it is one of the best places in Europe to visit to escape extreme summer temperatures.
There are many places that you can visit in Cornwall. The Lizard Peninsula is a good spot as the diverse fauna and flora and the cliffs and beaches here are perfect for a walk or to enjoy a day at the beach. You’ll find basalt rock formations that look like pillars due to volcanic activity in the area centuries ago.
Penzance is where you’ll find St. Michaels Mount, a historic castle, garden and island community off the coast of Cornwall. When the tide is low you can walk right up to the castle. On the way keep an eye out for fossils as the area is full of them.
Cadgwith, a fishing village, is the perfect spot to enjoy pasties, cream teas, and ice cream while you admire the colourful boats here and the fishermen busy with their fresh catch.
Weather
Average temperatures vary between 15 to 20 degrees for most days, with a few spells of rain each month.
How Best To Reach Destination
It is quite easy to get to Cornwall, but the most convenient is renting a car from London, and driving 6 hours. If you’re looking for something quicker, a few flights will get you to Newquay from London.
Alternatively, you can join a 5 day tour of the area from London.
Hotel Recommendation
Lavina says, “There are various accommodation options suit all tastes; however, Hotel Penzance is a good choice.
Booking.comSouth Coast, Iceland
By Stephanie from The Unknown Enthusiast
One of the best places to visit in Europe for mild summer temperatures is the South Coast of Iceland. In addition, you get to experience some of the most insanely cool landscapes and adventures.
Attractions in south Iceland can be roughly grouped into 3 different categories:
First, you can explore and tour the huge variety of waterfalls in Iceland. Walk behind Seljalandsfoss waterfall, find the hidden Gljúfrabúi waterfall in a cave, and feel the power of the massive Skogafoss falls.
The second category is the relaxing thermal springs. Blue Lagoon, with it’s milky blue waters and smoky atmosphere, is very well known, but the Hruni hot pot is idyllic and adorable, and the Reykjadalur Thermal River is definitely a unique experience for your Iceland itinerary.
The third category is glaciers. Embrace the adventure by doing glacier hikes on the Skaftafell glacier, or visit Glacier Lagoon, with its crystal blue icebergs floating in the water.
All of these experiences are absolutely jaw-droppingly gorgeous! But the real reason to visit Iceland in summer is because there is no night! While the sun does technically set for a few hours, between the end of May to beginning of August, it never gets dark, just slightly dusky.
That means you can tour during the day or night and have nonstop light! Plus, being so far north means that around the summer solstice (June 21), you can see the midnight sun, a bucket list item for sure.
Weather
Average highs for the summer peak in the mid-50’s, but can also often be in the 40’s as well. Rain and wind is common, but weather changes frequently in Iceland, so build some flexibility into your itinerary. There is no humidity.
How Best To Reach Destination
To access the South Coast of Iceland, fly into the international airport in Reykjavik and rent a car.
Hotel Recommendation
Stephanie says, “Traveling by campervan in Iceland is very popular and a great way to have flexibility – and I recommend the campsite by the Gljúfrabúi waterfall as one of your stops!”
Riga, Latvia
By Martha from May Cause Wanderlust
Riga is the capital of Latvia, one of the Baltic countries in northern Europe. It is a very attractive city, known as the Art Nouveau Capital of Europe. It is also a fantastic city in Europe to travel to when looking for vacation spots with cooler summer temperatures.
There is a lot to do in Riga, including wandering the cobbled streets of the medieval old town. Take a walking tour and see the highlights including Rozena iela, a street so narrow you can touch the opposite walls at the same time.
Also, there are several beautiful parks in which to picnic, including Canal Park and Esplanade Park, which also contains the stunning gold-domed Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ.
Finally, take a boat tour along the Daugava River and Riga City Canal, gliding past some of the most popular sights in Riga including the Freedom Monument and Riga Castle.
However, a top tip is to make sure you spend a few hours exploring the Art Nouveau Museum and doing a free self-guided Art Nouveau architecture walking tour around the city. There are so many great examples of Art Nouveau to discover!

Booking.comConwy, Wales

Conwy is a lovely Welsh town and one of the best places to visit in Europe with mild summer weather. It is situated by a beautiful river and offers amazing views of the Welsh countryside.
One of the best things to do is walk along the Conwy Town Walls, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are among the finest and most complete walls in Europe, stretching for three quarters of a mile, with 21 towers and three original gateways. They are free and offer spectacular views of Conwy’s medieval streets. If you are interested in the history of the area, take a walking tour led by a local.
Conwy Marina and Quay is also a lovely area to relax. You can find the smallest house in Great Britain. It is a Guinness Book of World Records holder, standing at 122 inches tall and 72 inches wide. There is only 16 square feet of usable space.

Due to its convenient location, Conwy allows you to visit many amazing places. Booking.comStockholm, Sweden
By Alina from World of Lina
For everyone wanting to escape extreme summer heat in Europe, Stockholm is a perfect destination. Even in July, the hottest month of the year, the average high is only around 70 °F.
Some of the best things to do in summer include a sailing trip from Stockholm to the mesmerizing archipelago with more than 30,000 small islands. While some of them are famous tourist spots with hotels, art galleries and amazing beaches, others are remote and unexplored.
Vaxholm, for example, is among the bigger ones where you can explore an old fortress and even stay overnight at either one of the very few hotels or an Airbnb.
Another activity not to be missed is a visit to Djurgarden, one of the 14 islands that make up Stockholm. It’s a lovely small island with beautiful nature, woodland trails and some of the capital’s most famous museums including the Vasa Museum (where you can admire a real-size, almost fully intact ship from the 17th century), the open-air museum Skansen (that shows how life was before the industrial revolution) and the Abba Museum. Whether you’re a nature lover or into art and history, this island is worth a visit!
No trip to Stockholm in summer is complete without spending at least one or two nights checking out some of the city’s coolest outdoor party spaces. Rooftop bars in an old slaughterhouse or in a revamped square are just a few of the many incredible hot spots.
Weather
Average high temperatures in June, July and August are between 66-71 degrees Fahrenheit. There is virtually no humidity.
How Best To Reach Destination
There are four different airports around the capital of Sweden. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the most frequented one. It’s about 25 miles (40 km) from the city center. You can easily take a train (20 minutes) or a bus (50 minutes) to reach Stockholm.
The nearest airport is Stockholm Bromma Airport which also has international and domestic flights. It’s only 6.8 mi (11 km) from the center.
Low-cost airlines usually use the two smaller airports, Stockholm Skavsta and Stockholm Västeras, that are further away.
Hotel Recommendation
Lina says, “There are loads of good accommodation options, however, compared to more southern European countries, Sweden is rather expensive. An affordable but still great choice is Hotel Hellsten in the city district Vasastan, a safe residential area just a short walk from the center.”

Booking.comBelfast, Northern Ireland
By Ella from Many More Maps
Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is often overlooked when it comes to European travel, but this awesome destination is perfect for escaping blistering summer heat. Moreover, it has a ton of awesome things to do, it’s cheap (far cheaper than London or Dublin) and not packed with tourists.
The best thing to do in Belfast is the Titanic Belfast Museum, and it should be on every Belfast itinerary. The Titanic was actually built in Belfast, and this modern and interactive museum tells the story of its construction, design and ultimate demise. It also includes plenty of unique attractions such as a 3D tour of the ship and even a ride.
Another fantastic thing to do is to take a Black Taxi Tour where you’ll learn all about “The Troubles”. From 1968-1998, Catholics fought their Protestant neighbors for the right to leave the United Kingdom to become part of the Republic of Ireland. There is fascinating street art and other memorials that capture the conflict and the loss of life. This is a fantastic Belfast tour if you are traveling with teens.
Many people visit Belfast on their way to visiting Giant’s Causeway and Dark Hedges (especially Game of Thrones fans!), and Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge. These three attractions are also easily experienced on a day trip from Belfast or even a tour from Dublin.
Weather
Summer temperatures in Belfast in June, July and August are between 62°F and 65°F during the day with cooler temperatures at night. There is no humidity.
How Best To Reach Destination
There are two airports in Belfast – Belfast International Airport (35 minutes away from the city) and George Best City Airport (10 minutes away from the city). Alternatively, you can fly into Dublin, pick up a rental car, and drive just over 2 hours.
Hotel Recommendation
Ella says, “The best place to stay in Belfast is the Titanic Hotel. Located in the city’s Titanic Quarter, it’s just a stone’s throw away from the Titanic Museum and most of the rooms have a view of the shipyard where it was built! It’s also a fairly new hotel, so you can expect beautiful modern decoration.”
Booking.comBansko, Bulgaria
By Maria & Katerina from It’s All Trip To Me
The lovely mountain town of Bansko in Bulgaria is a very popular winter destination and one of the best skiing resorts in Europe. However, Bansko is so much more. It is a quaint town tucked away in the embrace of the Pirin Mountains. In addition, it’s an ideal place in Europe to spend time when trying to escape from soaring summer temperatures in June, July and August.
Hiking is one of the best things to do in the summer in Bansko. There are many hiking paths and summer is the ideal time to enjoy the utter beauty of the scenery.
Moreover, Bansko is home to a picturesque Old Town with cobbled alleys, historic buildings and quite a few mehanas, traditionally decorated restaurants that serve superb Bulgarian food.

Booking.comSt. Petersburg, Russia
By Elizabeth from The Fearless Foreigner
St. Petersburg, Russia is one of the best destinations to visit in Europe to avoid stifling summer heat. In addition, there are a lot of things to do in St. Petersburg.
You don’t want to miss the Hermitage Museum, the largest art museum in the world. Founded in 1764, this gigantic palace is a work of art itself, not to mention the three million pieces of art in its collection. One estimate surmises that you would need about eleven years to view each exhibit on display for just one minute.
Peterhof Palace is an easy day trip from the city. It is a series of beautiful palaces and exquisite gardens commissioned by Peter the Great in response to the Palace of Versailles in France.
Canal and river cruises are also very popular. For a more unique way to navigate the waterways, take a kayak tour with PiterKayak. You’ll see the city from a whole new perspective.

Booking.comBergen, Norway
By Joanna from World In My Pocket
Bergen is one of the best places to travel in Europe for cooler summer temperatures. Whilst places like Malaga are famous for their 300 days of sunshine a year, Bergen is the opposite.
One of the main attractions in Bergen is the old docks of Bryggen which were established in 1070 and declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1979. Here you can tour through crooked houses, narrow alleyways and a lot of colour. In addition, there is a museum dedicated to the history of the city and a Christmas shop open all year round.
As Bergen is surrounded by seven mountains, one of the best things to do is go on a hike. The Vidden trail connects the top of Ulriken Mountain with the top of Floyen mountain. The trail passes through beautiful scenery and offers spectacular panoramas over the city from different angles. You can reach the tops of both mountains by cable cars, one of which connects to the city center.
You can also capture the beauty of the region on a round trip boat cruise through the fjords.
Another great thing to do in Bergen is eat your way through the fish market. You can either buy fresh fish to cook or try the sandwiches with marinated salmon or giant prawns.
Weather
In June, July and August, the average high temperature is 63 degrees Fahrenheit with rain expected around 50% of the time. There is no humidity.
How Best To Reach Destination
Bergen is easily accessible from Europe as it has its own airport. If you prefer to come from Oslo, take the day train for a spectacular journey – one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Hotel Recommendation
Joanna says, “There are plenty of places to stay in Bergen, but prepare to pay more than other European cities. I chose an apartment during my trip to Bergen as it was much more cost effective than a hotel.”
Constanta, Romania
By Elizabeth from Three Week Traveller
Constanta is located east of Bucharest on the famous Black Sea. It is one of the best places to visit for mild summer weather and a great place to add to a 3 week Eastern Europe Itinerary
There are many things you can do here. Firstly, enjoy the nice beaches of the Black Sea. Plaja 3 Papuci is the most popular beach with fine sand and sunshade to rent. Even during the peak of summer, the crowds don’t get too big which means it’s a great location for a quiet holiday.
If you are travelling with children or are young at heart, go to Aqua Magic Mamaia Water Park where you will find water slides, a lazy river, outdoor jacuzzis, a play area for children, and restaurants.
If you feel like exploring the town, there’s a double-decker tourist bus that drives up and down the coast. Make sure to visit Faleza Cazino Constanta and take a walk around to discover ancient buildings and historic spots like the Romanian Sailors Monument and Mihai Eminescu’s Statue – a famous Romanian poet and novelist from 1800. You can also book a tour with wine tasting to learn more about its history.
For dinner or drinks at night, head to Muscle Beach where you will find plenty of restaurants and bars right by the shore.
If you are feeling adventurous, head south one hour to Vama Veche, a small hippy beach town sitting right next to the border of Bulgaria. If you prefer camping, you can do that here. It also has a public nude beach. For passport stamp collectors, cross the Bulgarian border, enjoy a cold beer, then head back.

Booking.comIsle of Skye, Scotland
By Maggie from Pink Caddy Travelogue
One of the best places to visit in Europe for mild summer weather is Scotland’s windswept but otherworldly Isle of Skye.
The Isle of Skye is located on Scotland’s northwest coast. It’s famous for its ethereal fairy pools, herds of shaggy highland cattle, and rugged mountains. Because its claim to fame is its scenery, one of the best things to do here is to go hiking. You can take the popular Old Man of StorrTrail up to an amazing vista of the island, or a longer trek through the Quiraing range.
If you’re into visiting historic buildings, check out Dunvegan Castle, the only castle on the Isle of Skye. The gardens are stunning, and you might even spot some sea lions.
You can also drive out to Neist Point, the most photographed lighthouse in Scotland. It sits on a peninsula that juts out into the sea, making it an epic sunset location.
Alternatively, you can take single or multi-day organized tours from Inverness or Edinburgh to see the area.
If you’re an outdoor lover who prefers not to swelter in extreme summer heat, then the Isle of Skye is one of the best European summer destinations for you!
Weather
Skye is pretty far north and off the coast, so it rarely gets hot in the summer. The average high is 60 degrees Fahrenheit. And because it’s Scotland, you can bet it’ll rain at least a little on most days.
How Best To Reach Destination
The nearest international airport is either Glasgow or Edinburgh. From either city, you can pick up a rental car and drive about 5-hours through the beautiful Scottish highlands.
Hotel Recommendation
Maggie says, “As the largest city on Skye, Portree has the most accommodation options. It’s also the most centrally located to the best activities in the area. The Cuillin Hills is a beautiful, classic hotel in the heart of Portree.”
Booking.comTallinn, Estonia
By Becki from Meet Me In Departures
If you’re looking to avoid sizzling summer heat, then one of the best destinations to spend time is in Tallinn. Estonia’s capital is the northernmost of the three Baltic States, and even in the height of summer, it offers mild summer weather.
The city of Tallinn has a UNESCO listed historical centre, so this is where the majority of the attractions are. Allow a good portion of your time to wander and explore the pretty cobbled streets. One of the most iconic streets is in the artisan quarter and cute arched lane of St Catherine’s Passage.
In the heart of the city is the town square which is always a bustling hub of pop-up market stalls as well as the location of the Town Hall. You can climb up the bell tower of the Town Hall for panoramic views of Tallinn.
One of the best things to do in Tallinn is walk the city walls. At one point, the walls encircled the city, with towers, turrets and gateways found along them. Although parts of the wall no longer exist, you can still climb sections of it.
You can also go inside Kiek in de Kok, one of the towers, and visit a museum documenting the history of Tallinn. Alternatively, from here you can enter the Bastion Passages which were used in the city’s defence. They have a really eerie feel with ambient sound effects and narration telling of the city’s past.
Weather
Average highs in June, July and August range from 65 degree Fahrenheit to 70 degree Fahrenheit with cool evenings. There is practically no humidity.
How Best To Reach Destination
Tallinn is a short bus or tram ride from the main airport.
Hotel Recommendation
Becki says, “If you stay in Tallinn, opt to either stay within the city’s walls so the main attractions are within walking distance. If you prefer more modern accommodations, then the Rotermann Quarter is just outside the old city. This area was once factories, but has recently undergone huge redevelopment and is now filled with shops, gyms, restaurants and cafes.
Booking.comDolomites, Italy
By Krisztina from She Wanders Abroad
One of the best places to visit in Europe for mild summer weather is on a mountain vacation. Although there are many choices on the continent, the Dolomites are undoubtedly one of the most scenic ones.
The Dolomites are located in Northern Italy and although it’s a bit tricky to get there, it’s absolutely worth the hassle.
In terms of where to stay in the Dolomites, it’s best to base yourself in one or two towns and then explore. Ortisei and Cortina d’Ampezzo work best but you can take a look at a couple of smaller towns as well such as La Villa or Dobbiaco.
Summer is actually one of the best times to visit the Dolomites because you’ll find all the hiking trails and mountain roads open.
If you’re an outdoorsy type, you can take advantage of the many amazing hikes the Dolomites offer. One of the most popular ones is Tre Cime di Lavaredo which is suitable for absolute beginners. However, if you’re looking for a challenge, you can tackle the hike to Lago di Sorapis or the Vajolet Towers.
Don’t worry, if you’re not a hiker, you’ll still find plenty of things to do in the area. You can visit the most beautiful alpine lakes like Lago di Braies or Lago di Carezza.
Alternatively, you can stroll around charming little towns while trying some classic Italian dishes. Even if you only drive around the Dolomites, you’ll be blown away by the scenery.
Weather
Summer weather is usually nice and warm and the temperature rarely goes over 80°F although you can expect some rainy days. You may get 2-3 days of humidity in July and August.
How Best To Reach Destination
There are no dedicated airports in the area, so you have to either fly to Venice or Milan, pick up a rental car, and then drive around 3-4 hours.
Accommodation
Krisztina says, “In terms of where to stay in the Dolomites, it’s best to base yourself in one or two towns and then explore. Ortisei and Cortina d’Ampezzo work best but you can take a look at a couple of smaller towns as well such as La Villa or Dobbiaco.”
Lake Constance, Germany
By Marianne from Past Pretzels And Passports
Lake Constance (Bodensee) is one of the largest lakes in Europe. Surrounded by resort towns and considered a favorite holiday destination, the lake is actually straddled by three countries—Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It is one of the best European vacation destinations to beat the extreme summer heat.
Aside from lounging at one of the many beaches, swimming or windsurfing, one of the most popular pastimes for people visiting Lake Constance is to go on a boat ride. There is no shortage of companies offering cruises, catamaran, or ferry rides. Spend the day out on the water, or simply take a boat ride to explore the islands or various towns surrounding the lake.
One such town that you should discover is Kontsanz. Take a walking tour and discover the history and amazing architecture. Niederburg is the oldest district in Konstanz, with several landmarks dating back to the 14th century. The neighbourhood boasts cobblestone roads, gorgeous medieval half-timbered houses, and numerous shops, restaurants and wine caves, all tucked away behind the town’s old walls.
In fact, head to the Schnetztor, which is one of three remaining fortification towers built to protect the town in the Middle Ages. Be sure to grab some ice cream as you stroll through this incredibly walkable town. And when it’s time for lunch, head to the Konzilgebäude.
The Konzilgebäude was originally built in 1388 as a warehouse before it became a religious site. Now, it is a wonderful restaurant that serves absolutely delicious traditional German dishes (think spaetzle and schnitzel), and offers incredible views across Lake Constance.
For the best views of Konstanz, go to the gothic Konstanz Cathedral. Built in the 15th century, you can climb up the 193 steps to the top of the tower for some pretty incredible views. The church itself is filled with history. From the beautiful frescoes, gold and marble chancel and ornate wood carvings, to the romanesque painted wood ceiling, spiral staircase and thousand-year-old crypt, this cathedral is definitely worth the visit.
Another popular activity is to spend time on Lake Constance Trail. With over 270 kilometers of trail, you can run, hike or bike around the entire lake. The trail offers incredible views of rolling hills, orchards, vineyards, and farms. Considered a moderate level hike, there is only a 400 m change in elevation across the entire trail.
Weather
The closest airport to Lake Constance is Friedrichshafen which is only 15.7 miles away. You can rent a car, take the train or bus to easily reach the lake.
How Best To Reach Destination
As one of the sunniest places in Germany, the best time to visit is in June, July and August, when the average highs are regularly around 77.8°F (25.4°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 58.3°F (14.6°C) at night. There is little to no humidity.
Hotel Recommendation
Marianne says, “If you are planning to stay in Konstanz, there are a variety of accommodations available ranging from spa resorts, quaint inns, or beachside VRBOs. Stay in the historic Steigenberger Inselhotel, which was once a monastery, or the more modern Hampton by Hilton Konstanz with great amenities.”
