Is The Samsonite Winfield 2 Any Good (Review)?

Most of us want a strong, functional, and good looking suitcase to let us travel with confidence. Ideally, many of us would prefer one with handy features that mean we don’t need to spend hours lifting weights to prepare for a weekend break. The right suitcase supports your lifestyle and travel choices. The wrong bag leaves you struggling to move yourself, maybe even your children, and your luggage through the departure gate and fails to protect your precious belongings in transit.

When the time comes to ditch the casual backpack and invest in a suitcase, how do you pick a winner? Is the Samsonite Winfield 2 the best suitcase for your needs? Let’s look at the evidence.

The Samsonite Story

Since its founding in 1910 in Denver, Samsonite has produced quality luggage. Samsonite concentrates on making luggage and executive cases, and it doesn’t stay mired in the past – it’s an early adopter of new technology. It continues to give contemporary travelers the best solutions to travel problems to serve their needs.

Some of their recent innovations include using recycled materials (Recyclex – from plastic bottles) and opening multiple repair centers all over the world for those mishaps that occur to the most seasoned traveler. For many people, Samsonite is synonymous with “suitcases”.

Does the Samsonite Winfield 2 Provide What You Need?

It seems obvious – you need a suitcase that fits your clothes, shoes, devices, sunblock, toiletries, books, snorkeling equipment, or whatever else you transport with you. But suitcases have different features, and every traveler has different needs.

Summary Of Samsonite Winfield 2 Features

  • TSA combination lock for security and convenience.
  • Spinner wheels, retractable telescopic handle, and a couple of hand carrying handles.
  • Expansion for a little extra room.
  • Polycarbonate shell for lightweight, durable use and protection.
  • Choice of 5 colors.

Volume Of The Samsonite Winfield 2

Most suitcase measurements come in lengths and are measuring the internal dimensions. The Samsonite Winfield 2 comes in 20″ (51cm), 24″ (61cm), and 28″ (71cm) size options. However, for the purposes of airline baggage regulations, external lengths are relevant. Accordingly, the external lengths of Samsonite Winfield 2 are 23″, 27″ and 31.5″.

When it comes to figuring out what you require for your trip, what does that mean?

The 28″ Samsonite Winfield 2 measures a roomy 28″ x 19.75″ x 12.5″(71cm x 51cm x 32cm), giving you just over 3.5 cubic feet of packing space. Translated into what really counts – that is enough for 40 to 50 T-shirts with some room to spare (for the indecisive…).  In addition, the 24″ and 28″ Samsonite Winfield 2 suitcases are expandable, which means that you get even more room. The clamshell design (it splits in half when it opens) gives you access to all of the space.

Weight Of The Samsonite Winfield 2

Air travel comes with a restricted luggage allowance, even if you find yourself in business or first class, and the weight of your suitcase uses up some of that precious quota. A suitcase needs to balance providing protection for your contents with lightweight construction, giving you maximum benefit.

The Samsonite Winfield 2 ranges from approximately 6.7lbs (3 Kg) to 11.3 lbs (5.0 Kg). Soft-sided luggage is normally much less. For example, the 28″ Samsonite Ascella X Large Spinner is only 8.6 lbs (3.9 Kg). Accordingly, in whichever size of the Samsonite Winfield you are interested, you need to contemplate the amount and type of personal items that you are considering packing when deciding whether this is the right suitcase for you.

Spinner Wheels

Surprisingly, it was as late as 1970 before the first rolling suitcase hit the market. In 2004, Samsonite refined it and produced the standard-setting “spinner” luggage – four casters under a suitcase with vertical orientation and a retractable handle for pushing or pulling your luggage.

The Samsonite Winfield is “spinner” luggage with multi-directional and effortless movement options. The weight of the suitcase is usually pushed by or guided from the telescopic handle. If the suitcase is heavy, it is not always easy to do. However, it is far easier than carrying it or pulling it behind you, although you can still do either if circumstances warrant it.

The Samsonite Winfield 2 hard side luggage with spinner wheels also comes with a strong metal telescopic handle to help you maneuver it around the airport. There are also two easy-to-grab soft handles on the top and side to lift and store it.

The telescopic handle is mainly made from aluminum and the handle is nicely contoured to easily fit into your hand. The handle quickly collapses with a button nestled beneath it and on top of the suitcase for easy check-in or putting in the overhead.

The telescopic handle can only be locked in two positions – extended or stored. In other words, you can’t lock it in multiple positions to adjust it to fit your own height or preferences. In addition, it is a compromise between weight and functionality – it’s lightweight but adequate for smooth surfaces found in airports, not so good for bouncing over cobbled streets.

Damage Limitation

A soft-sided suitcase is lighter to carry but offers minimal protection for fragile contents and is vulnerable to tearing in heavy handling. Although you can look after small cabin luggage (like the 20″ Samsonite Winfield 2), the larger models go in the hold and are handled by the baggage crew.  A hard-sided suitcase is more rigid and offers greater protection for its contents compared to a soft-sided suitcase.

The Samsonite Winfield offers the best of both options. It is a hard-sided case made from a polycarbonate material that is light, robust, and recyclable. However, if you bump the sides, they flex and bounce back.

A rigid case picks up dents and scuffs. However, the flexible material of the Samsonite Winfield 2 minimizes surface damage, keeping your luggage looking smart and your personal items protected.

The Samsonite Winfield comes with a built-in mounted TSA (Transport Security Administration) lock that allows you to slide in the zippers of the suitcase to lock it. This means that at most airports around the world, security has the tools to safely open for and re-lock your suitcase after inspection. While airport security has these tools, the contents in your suitcase remain locked away and inaccessible to others.

It’s a combination lock, so you don’t need to worry about carrying extra keys on your trip or losing them.

Smart Packing In Your Samsonite Winfield 2 Hard Side Luggage With Spinner

As mentioned earlier, the Samsonite Winfield 2 is a clamshell design. In other words, when the suitcase is open, it splits in two with easy access to pack and unpack on each side.

The inside of the Samsonite Winfield has a full nylon liner and cross straps to tie down your clothing. In addition, the top section has a couple of interesting features. First, there is a full mesh zippered cover that keeps everything in place when you close the suitcase. Second, there are a couple of pockets in the cover itself for important or vulnerable items.

The two larger models of the Samsonite Winfield are expandable by about an 1.5″ or 4 cm, which gives some leeway for packing a few holiday souvenirs or an extra pair of shoes.

If you want your suitcase to match your personality, then the Samsonite Winfield 2 “Fashion” gives you a choice of five colors, including bright orange, blue or purple. These colors also make it easy to spot your luggage on the carousel.

You don’t get options such as stripes or spots, but overall, that means your luggage stays stylish for longer and doesn’t date your tastes. Even the bright orange, blue and purple have a more refined finish than what you might otherwise expect from a suitcase with those colors.

Does The Samsonite Winfield 2 Give Value For Your Money?

Samsonite Winfield has been a staple of the Samsonite luggage family for a long time now. Accordingly, it is more affordable than some newer models with questionable “upgrades”.

Regardless, for frequent fliers you need to check the airline’s regulations for cabin and hold luggage restrictions because they change regularly – what was acceptable cabin luggage in weight and length one year may no longer be allowable the following. Lower priced luggage is an insignificant factor if the airline won’t accept it in the cabin, or in the hold without additional payments.

Buying Samsonite Winfield 2 Set

Each Samsonite Winfield suitcase is well priced. However, purchasing them together in either a two or three suitcase set gives you a substantial discount. It also means that you always have the right suitcase on hand.

Samsonite gives you a decent ten-year limited warranty for product defects on your Samsonite Winfield, but not against damage inflicted by others, including the airlines.

Samsonite produces a range of eco-friendly suitcases using recycled materials, but the Samsonite Winfield 2 does not include those materials. However, the polycarbonate shell and metal components are entirely recyclable. In addition, Samsonite has repair centers in 65 different countries keeping your Samsonite Winfield functional and in use for longer.

What’s Missing from the Samsonite Winfield 2?

No product is ever perfect so what is missing?

  • Side pocket – it’s handy having a side compartment you can access without having to unzip the suitcase.
  • Use of recycled materials – its materials can be reused and recycled, but if you want a suitcase made from recycled materials, you need a different suitcase.
  • Outrageous patterns – if you want neon pink zebra stripes, then you are out of luck.
  • Guaranteed acceptable – each airline has different sizes and weight allowances, and these rules change regularly. The Samsonite Winfield 2 has been on the market for years and its 20″ “carry on” size may no longer meet all airlines’ current requirements.
