Sicily, Italy

Yulia From Miss Tourist

Do you remember being taught in school that Italy looks like a boot kicking a ball? Well, Sicily is the ball! This southern Italian island is warm in April and is famous for its amazing beaches and adorable villages. Get ready to indulge in a Limoncello while devouring some delicious arancini because Sicily is one of the best places to visit in Europe in April!

Although it won’t be full-blown summer temperatures yet, April is a great month to visit Sicily. Everything is getting ready for tourist season yet the beaches and attractions are relatively empty. If it’s too cold to take a dip in the ocean, don’t worry, this volcanic island offers some inviting hot springs for even the chilliest spring days.

The exception to the quietness of April comes around Easter when Sicily becomes an incredibly popular destination for mainland Italians. Even if you’re not a religious person, you can still enjoy the Dance of the Devils, a famous festival held in the mountain town of Prizzi where masked “devils” and “deaths” walk around dressed in red and yellow respectively, searching for souls to take to hell on Easter Sunday.

However you choose to spend your vacation, make sure not to miss the Valley of the Temples. This ancient archeological site is one of the best examples of ancient Greek art and architecture in the world and really will make you feel as if you have stepped back in time.

Directions And Weather

Since Sicily is quite large, there are two main international airports into which you can fly. Catania Fontanarossa International Airport is located on the east coast and Palermo Airport is on the north coast. It’s best to decide where you would like to stay in Sicily before booking your flights so you can avoid unnecessarily long drives. However, since it’s an island, no matter where you choose to go, you can take a wonderful road trip and it won’t take any longer than 4 hours to drive across the whole thing!

In April, Sicily has average temperatures of 60°F.

Hotel Recommendation

Yulia says, “If you want to make your trip extra special, book a room at Hotel Villa Athena. This is one of the best hotels in Sicily and is actually located inside a UNESCO world heritage site. With an on-site wellness center and pool, elegant rooms, marble bathrooms, and direct views of the ancient temples, there’s not much more to ask from this 5 star hotel!”

My husband and I just returned from a 12 day road trip in Sicily and it was utterly spectacular. For our itinerary, hotel and restaurant recommendations, please see Best 12 Day Itinerary In Sicily.

Jersey, Britain (Photo courtesy of Coralie from Grey Globetrotters)

Jersey, Great Britain

By Coralie from Grey Globetrotters

The small British island of Jersey, just 12 miles from the French Normandy coast, is one of the best April getaways in Europe. Thanks to its mild climate, spring arrives a little earlier in Jersey than on the English “mainland”. April sees the island ablaze with colour – bright wildflowers peep out from hedgerows and granite walls, while the trees are laden with abundant early blossom.

April is when the Jersey tourist season begins. However, there are fewer crowds than at the height of the summer season. It’s the perfect time for leisurely cycle rides through lush green lanes, breath-taking cliff path hikes, discovering beautiful beaches and taking your pick from abundant historic sites that are gloriously crowd free.

You can also dine at some of the best restaurants on the freshest of seasonal local produce, including famous Jersey Royal potatoes that were probably picked from a nearby field that very day. If you love seafood, April is the end of the oyster season, so you can feast on locally grown oysters.

Weather And Directions

Expect the weather to be pleasant, at about 54oF (12°C). There will be a chance of rain, so be sure to take a waterproof jacket and an umbrella.

Flights to Jersey from London’s Gatwick airport take less than an hour. You’ll probably arrive at your hotel within an hour of landing as the island is only 9 miles by 5!

Hotel Recommendation

Coralie says, “The loveliest places to stay in Jersey are the Atlantic Hotel in St Brelade, with its panoramic views across St Ouen’s Bay (the 5 mile beach), and the outstanding Longueville Manor Hotel in St Saviour. Both will spoil you rotten, serve the finest of food, and will make sure you leave feeling completely refreshed after even the shortest of breaks.”

Madrid, Spain (Photo courtesy of Florian Wehde from Unsplash)

Madrid, Spain

By Victoria From Guide Your Travel Blog

Madrid is the capital city of Spain and a very underrated city. A lot of tourists skip Madrid and head to Barcelona or Malaga but it is one of the best European cities to visit in April. There is a lot to see and do including some of the most famous art museums in the world, delicious food options, vibrant nightlife, and a lot of sightseeing hotspots.

April is a good time of year to visit this European destination. The city isn’t too crowded with tourists so you can get good deals on accommodation and flights. As well, April is when the popular Semana Santa takes place which is a holy week with a lot of different celebrations including grand processions. While this is a mostly Andalusian tradition, Madrid actually holds quite a few festivities during this week that shouldn’t be missed.

You could easily spend a week here if not more. The museums alone will take you a few days to see including the famous Prado or the Museo de Reina Sofia, two of the world’s most important art museums. The Prado displays masterpieces by Velázquez, Rubens, Goya, El Bosco, and El Greco, to name a few.

Head to one of the city’s best rooftop bars such as the Riu Sky Bar or the popular Gymage bar so you can enjoy stunning views of landmarks like the Royal Palace, the Almudena Cathedral or the popular Retiro Park.

In the evenings, try authentic Spanish tapas and a glass of wine in one of Madrid’s best bars, such as Malaspina which is located in the heart of Madrid’s nightlife area.

Weather And Directions

The weather will be warm but not hot with average temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. You may occasionally encounter some light rain. Still, Madrid is known for its comfortable temperatures and favourable climate so you won’t be cold for very long even if there is a rainy day.

Madrid’s largest airport is Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport. A great way to reach the center of the city is to hop on the metro. This will take around 30 minutes.

Hotel Recommendation

Victoria says, “If you’re looking for a luxurious hotel with an incredible rooftop pool, the Emperador Hotel is the best choice in Madrid.”

Amsterdam, Netherlands

By Samantha from Continuous Roamer

Without a doubt, April is the best time to visit Amsterdam. Tulips spring up all over the city and create beautiful and colorful scenes. Tulip season typically runs from late March to mid-May, which means you are guaranteed tulips in April.

Make sure you take day trips and visit the surrounding towns of Amsterdam, such as Lisse, Noordwijk and Sassenheim to also see huge fields of tulips. If you prefer, you can rent a bike and easily cycle around this region.

One of the most popular places to visit in spring is Keukenhof in Lisse. It is known as the “Garden of Europe” and one of the world’s largest flower gardens. Keukenhof Park is almost 80 acres (32 hectares) and over 7 million flower bulbs are planted annually. In April, you will find fascinating arrangements of beautiful spring flowers in peak bloom.

Another reason to visit Amsterdam in April is for the biggest Dutch celebration of the year – King’s Day. Every year the population of The Netherlands celebrates this national holiday on April 26th and 27th. The whole country dresses in orange and celebrates the birth of King Willem-Alexander. In Amsterdam, you can celebrate in the streets, arrange a canal ride, or book tickets for a music festival.

Weather And Directions

The temperature is typically 50 Fahrenheit at this time of year. However, come prepared for all kinds of weather because you may experience some light rain in April.

If you are considering a spring break weekend in Amsterdam, it is easily accessible from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and a 30-minute drive to the city.

Hotel Recommendation

Samantha says, “Make sure you book a hotel along a canal for the ultimate Amsterdam experience. The Hoxton Hotel is located on the stunning Herengracht canal and would be ideal.”

Gozo, Malta (Photo courtesy of Rick Barton from Unsplash)

Gozo, Malta

By Raluca from Travel With A Spin

Gozo is an island and the smaller and cooler sister of Malta. It is also one of the best April beach destinations in Europe.

Victoria is the capital and cultural center of the island. Its citadel was built centuries ago to protect the Gositans against pirates and invaders. Nowadays, it’s the main tourist attraction, including the Cathedral, an Archeological Museum, Gran Castello, the old prison and a Museum of Natural Sciences. These are the best places to learn more about the history of the island and traditional life of the locals.

Gozo is also home to Ggantija temples, the oldest free-standing monumental structures in the world. They are even older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge.

Azure Windows, also known as the Dwejra Window, was a big tourist attraction on Gozo until it fell in 2017. It was a 28-metre-tall natural arch from Gozo into the Mediterranean Sea. However, Dwejra Bay is still a favorite for diving and snorkelling. Beach lovers will also have a wonderful time at Ramla Bay with its golden-red sand, the only real beach on Gozo.

A trip to Gozo is one of the best destinations in Europe in April. Good Friday and Easter are usually celebrated in April. Maltese people are very religious and mark these days with liturgies and special ceremonies, including colorful street processions. Some food specialties are only available during this time, like figolla, an Easter pastry with marzipan-like filling.

Directions And Weather

There’s no airport on the tiny island. The best way to reach Gozo is to fly to Malta and transfer to Ċirkewwa by car or bus. A ferry for Mgarr on Gozo leaves every hour and takes only 25 minutes.

Average temperatures in April are 68oF (or 20ºC), warm enough for a day at the beach and perfect for exploring.

Hotel Recommendation

Raluca says, “Victoria, the capital of the island, is the best place to stay. A good choice is Casa Gemelli, a luxurious boutique B&B in an immaculately restored townhouse.

Besides the traditional architecture, complete with a Maltese wooden balcony, guests will enjoy unforgettable views of the Citadel from its cozy terrace, lovely for an April evening.”
best places to go to in April in Europe
Munich, Germany (Photo courtesy of Matthias Schroder from Unsplash)

Munich, Germany

By Bec from Wyld Family Travel

Munich is one of the best April city breaks in Europe. For people who like to attend Oktoberfest, Munich has the Fruhlingsfest or little Oktoberfest at the end of April. Held exactly where the original Oktoberfest is, you can get your fill of beer with half the crowds.

If beer isn’t your thing, there are countless other things to see and do while visiting one of Europe’s most popular cities.

Consider touring Nymphenburg Palace which was built for Bavarian Royalty. In the building beside it, you will find the Marstall Museum. This museum holds the carriages used by royalty and the tableware they used.

The Munich Residence is absolutely magnificent. It is another palace but this is right in the heart of Munich. Many of the rooms are so delicately decorated that you can’t imagine how they did it. The treasury is also there with some amazing items such as crowns and necklaces.

The Deutsche Museum is the largest science and technology museum in Germany and is fabulous for children and adults alike. In addition, you can visit the BMW Museum and book a tour of the factory to watch how they are made.

If the sun is shining and you want to get outdoors, there are many gardens from which to choose. A favorite is the English Garden. It is one of the biggest city parks in the world. Many locals come here to go to a beer garden, watch the surfers or relax by the small lake.

Weather And Directions

Average temperatures in Munich is 57oF. However, temperatures do fluctuate, so you may experience many seasons when visiting Munich in April. Make sure you pack a light jacket and an umbrella.

Most international tourists will arrive and depart from the Munich International Airport. There are a few options for your transport to or from the airport but the cheapest way is by public transport. The train will cost approximately 11.00 euros one way and take about 45 minutes. A taxi may cost in excess of 70 euros and depending on the traffic, may take nearly the same amount of time as the train.

Hotel Recommendation

Bec says, “If you are looking for a place to stay then the Meininger Hotels are a great affordable option when you stay in Munich. They are a combination of a hotel and a hostel with many having cooking facilities as well as laundry facilities. These are great for families travelling to Munich or long term travellers.”

Dubrovnik, Croatia

By Shweta Singhal from Zest In A Tote

Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and one of the best April trips you can take in Europe. Fans of the epic TV series “Game of Thrones” will immediately link the orange roof tops, the azure Adriatic Sea and the thick walls around the old town area to its medieval roots.

Dubrovnik’s old town is certainly one of the best preserved in Europe. With this popularity comes the crazy crowds in high season which are the summer months of July and August. To avoid these crowds, the best time to visit Dubrovnik is April and May.

The mild and sunny weather in April is perfect for walking the walls and taking in the stunning views of the old town and the Adriatic Sea.

Another fantastic spot for panoramic views of the entire city and the Adriatic Sea is from the top of Mount Srd. At the top, you will find Fort Imperial, a defensive structure originally built by the French in 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars.

More recently, it was a strategic defense position during the Seige of Dubrovnik during the Croatian War of Independence. To reach it easily, take the cable car or bus. For adventurers, you can hike up the trail.

There are many interesting small palaces and monasteries that can be visited in the old town. And for the more active, you can take a kayaking trip to Lokrum island. However, the Adriatic Sea is cool in April so dress properly.

In the evening, don’t miss the lively bars and cafes in the old town to make it an even more memorable experience.

Directions and Weather

Dubrovnik has an international airport located 12 miles (21 km) from the Old Town. It normally takes around 30 minutes to reach. Instead of flying into this city, consider driving the beautiful coastline from Split to Dubrovnik as part of a Croatia itinerary.

The weather in April is very pleasant with highs that can reach 64oF, although there may be the occasional light rainfall.

Hotel Recommendation

Consider staying in the impressive 5-star Hotel Dubrovnik Palace with a beach and a scuba diving center for a world-class stay in Dubrovnik.

One of the best European holidays in April is Lyon, France. The city lives outdoors with its two main rivers, shoreline walks, farmers markets and restaurants that serve local fish and seafood brought in locally.

Belgrade, Serbia (Photo courtesy of Dejan Aleksic from Unsplash)

Belgrade, Serbia

Ellis Veen from Backpack Adventures

After the long cold months of winter, Belgrade slowly comes back alive in April and becomes one of the best places to visit in Europe.

In April, the city’s green market fills up with colourful fresh produce and the outdoors welcomes you. On a beautiful spring day, visit one of the parks, such as Kalemegdan Park.

Kalemegdan is the largest park in Belgrade. In addition, it has the Kalemegdan fortress, the most important historical monument in Belgrade. It is located on a 400 ft or 125 metre high cliff with beautiful views of the Sava and the Danube rivers. The old citadel has protected the city since 279 BC.

Nearby is Knez Mihailova, the main shopping street and Skadarlija, the bohemian quarter of Belgrade, with restaurants and artisan shops along cobblestone streets.

April does bring some rain, but even on a rainy day there are plenty of things to do in Belgrade. There are several interesting museums such as the Tito museum about the leader of the former Yugoslavia (1945-1980) and the National Museum about the country’s history.

A visit to the Sava cathedral is also worthwhile because it is the biggest orthodox church in the world. Easter normally falls in April and it is one of the most important holidays in the orthodox religion. Celebrations and services would be interesting and unique during this time.

Lastly, Belgrade is a great destination to try Serbian food. There are plenty of budget friendly restaurants, such as Mala Gostionica that serve local specialties such as cevapi (Balkan kebab) and pljeskavica (Balkan hamburger).

Weather And Directions

Sunny days and temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit make for pleasant weather to explore this interesting city.

It is easy to visit Belgrade as you fly directly into Belgrade’s international airport, only 30 minutes away.

Hotel Recommendation

Ellis says, “For cheap accommodation, you can go to NapPARK hostel or choose from the huge selection of apartments on Airbnb.”

Lisbon, Portugal

By Jenifer Byington from The Evolista

Lisbon is one of the best European vacations in April with exciting festivals and lots of sunny weather.

Start your 2 day Lisbon itinerary with a trip on the iconic yellow tram 28 up to the Alfama neighborhood, one of the oldest in Lisbon. Miradouro da Graça is the perfect place to enjoy the sunset and take in the rooftop views. Afterwards, enjoy this historic neighborhood full of narrow cobbled stone roads, ancients houses, cafes and entertainment.

If you only see a few landmarks in Lisbon, make sure you include Belem Tower and Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. This is the location from where Portuguese explorers would set off to explore the world. Belem Tower is actually Portugal’s most famous landmark, an excellent example of late gothic, Manueline architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

April has a few great festivals that will make your trip even more exciting. The Lisbon Fish and Flavors Festival is a terrific place to sample Portuguese cuisine. Spectators will love the competition for the best pataniscas (cod cakes) and pastéis de nata (custard pastries), dishes you absolutely should try in Lisbon.

In addition, the Belem Days of Music Festival has live classical music and on April 25th, it is Freedom Day. This is an important Portuguese holiday celebrated with a huge parade.

Weather And Directions

The beginning of spring offers 68 degree highs and 53 degree lows. There are a few days of light April showers but it’s a small price to pay for being able to see the city without the throngs of summer tourists.

From Lisbon airport, it only takes 15 minutes to get to the city center.

Hotel Recommendation

Jenifer says, “Browns Central Hotel is a hip hotel with great decor that’s perfectly located.”

Rome, Italy

By Nadine from Le Long Weekend

Rome is one of the best European city breaks in April, especially for Catholics who flock to the Italian capital from around the world in anticipation of Holy Week. The 7 days leading up to Easter Sunday set the stage for a series of papal events, starting with Palm Sunday, and ending with a Monday Mass in Saint Peter’s Square.

You don’t have to be religious to enjoy Rome and the Vatican City at this time. The atmosphere and jovial mood in the city are enough to make the experience of witnessing Easter in Rome very enjoyable. But if you want a quieter experience, it’s better to come outside of Easter week and appreciate the city under the warm glow of springtime sunshine.

April is an ideal time to do a walking tour of Rome. Take in all the top sights such as the mighty Colosseum which was built in AD 80 and was once used to host bloody gladiator battles. Be sure to buy an entrance ticket to explore the intricate maze of passageways found inside.

The Trevi fountain is one of the most famous landmarks in Rome and one of the most impressive with its marble statues. Toss a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain and legend has it you’ll be back to see it again.

It’s also the best time to visit the famous butterfly-shaped Spanish Steps which date back to the 1720s. Come April, the stairs are adorned with hundreds of blooming azaleas – a tradition that dates back almost 80 years.

Weather And Directions

The average temperature of Rome in April hovers around 60F and there are more sunny days than not.

Rome has two international airports, Fiumicino and Ciampino. Both are serviced by trains/buses, or you can book a taxi or drive the short distance into the city.

Ljubljana is the capital and largest city in Slovenia. There are many amazing things to do and see in April, making it one of the best European getaways in April. You can also use it as a home base to explore the spectacular countryside, including Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge and Postojna Cave.

Nicole says, “For a smaller more intimate stay, try the Lesar Hotel Angel, a pretty boutique hotel in Ljubljana Old Town.”

Malaga, Spain

By Cristina from The Little World Of Travelling

Malaga, located in Southern Spain, is known for being a summer destination, however, there are many other reasons why you may want to visit this beautiful city at other times of the year.

Malaga is one of the best European escapes in April because of the celebration of the Holy Week. Although it’s a religious event, it’s a good way to learn more about Spanish culture. During this special week, you can see religious processions at any time. Each procession represents a religious figure and the last days of Jesus Christ.

When not viewing a religious procession, you cannot miss the opportunity to explore Alcazaba de Malaga, a beautiful Moorish fortress-palace that has incredible panoramic views of the city, beautiful architecture and patios. It is the best-preserved alcazaba in Spain.

Malaga is perfect for budget travellers as there are many free activities in Malaga, especially during Sunday afternoons. This includes walking through Muelle Uno, the port area with a wide range of restaurants and shop, and a fantastic spot to watch the sunset, as well as exploring Soho to discover colourful street art.

Weather And Directions

Average temperatures range from a maximum of 70°F and a minimum of 52°F. These temperatures make it easier to explore Malaga’s main attractions compared to the stifling heat of the summer months.

The best way to Malaga is by flying to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP). The airport is only a 15 minute drive from the city centre. Alternatively, you can take public transport (bus and underground) to the city centre.

Pirin National Park is a fantastic April outdoor adventure destination in Europe as it gives you the best of both worlds. Travel early enough in the month and you’ll catch a few days skiing in Bansko, Europe’s cheapest ski resort. Head later in the month and you’ll see spring and experience some glorious spring hiking.

Pirin National Park is located on the outskirts of Bansko – a great all-season place to spend time. There are amazing mountain bike trails through the National Park and April is a super time to explore in this way, as the weather makes it a very pleasant experience. In addition, there are beautiful natural hot springs in the forest when it is time to relax.

Located nearby, you can also visit the Dancing Bear Park at Belitsa. This “retirement home” for ex-dancing and rescued bears is glorious in spring when the bears come out of hibernation.

For those interested in experiencing different cultural events, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church usually celebrates Easter in April. A visit during this time would allow you to watch the celebrations and understand the traditions.

Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, is an amazing destination in Europe to visit in April.

It is officially spring, the weather gets warm and pleasant, and the days get longer. The city is not overcrowded with tourists making Porto one of the best destinations to visit in April in Europe.

Since spring is a great time to be outdoors, there are several interesting things to do in Porto. It is the perfect time to stroll down Ribeira, Porto’s most happening riverside district or take the 6-Bridges tour on Rio Douro. You can also ride the cable car in Porto Gaia for a breathtaking view of the city.

If you are a culture enthusiast, you will love a walking tour of the city which gives you a chance to explore its architectural gems such as the Church of Carmo, Clerigos Tower, and Palacio da Bolsa. Constructed between the 17th and 19th centuries, Porto’s historic monuments sport various architectural styles – Baroque and Neoclassical being the most common.

In addition, in 1996, Porto’s Historic Center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be sure to walk around this beautiful part to see several azulejo-clad churches, homes, and office buildings. A

zulejos are glazed, ceramic tiles that adorn the facades of many buildings in Porto. They depict biblical stories, daily lives and are usually painted blue. Porto is often referred to as the Blue City of Portugal for its abundant azulejo-facades.

April is a great time to take part in Porto’s Easter celebrations that are filled with gaiety, dances, and concerts. Effigies of Judas are burnt and carnivals and concerts dot the city.

Easter is also the time for traditional family meals and lots of shopping. Dig into a traditional Easter meal which usually consists of home cooked lamb, Pao de Lo (Portuguese sponge cake), and of course the famous Douro wine.

You can also take a day trip to Braga, Portugal’s Holy City where the festival is celebrated with special ceremonies and processions.

Luxembourg City is one of the best spring vacation destinations in Europe as it is such a pretty time of year. For such a small country, the city of Luxembourg and the surrounding countryside has it all.

Springtime in Luxembourg is lovely with lots of spring flowers blooming and terraces opening for drinks. In April, Luxembourg City is mostly locals so you get an authentic experience before all the tourists arrive in summer. This is true for the surrounding areas as well, such as the towns of Echternach and Beval.

One of the best things to do in April is to go hiking on the Mullerthal trails. The hiking routes are suitable for all ages and levels.

In addition, there are some incredible castles nearby to explore on day trips. The most popular one is Vianden where you can take a tour and join the chair lift from the bottom of the valley. As well, Clervaux Castle is gorgeously situated on a rocky slope surrounded by the pretty town of Clervaux.

Temperature wise, it’s not the warmest place in Europe, but don’t let that discourage you. The average maximum temperature during the day is 13.2°C (55.76°F), but it’s on average also the driest month, so you likely won’t need your raincoat when visiting.

April is a great time to visit Sorrento, a beautiful European resort town with dramatic streets, pretty gardens and charming bathing platforms. The spring flowers are blooming, the area is coming back to life with visitors and the weather is lovely.

Sorrento makes a perfect base for day trips to some of Italy’s most interesting and iconic sights. The island of Capri is just 30 minutes from Sorrento by ferry. Don’t miss the lovely Cathedral Square in Amalfi and Positano’s iconic pastel houses tumbling down the cliffs towards the beach. There is ferry service between Sorrento and the towns of Amalfi and Positano, meaning you can experience the area from both the cliffs and the sea.

In addition, Sorrento is ideally placed for day trips to the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Both are easy to reach by train from Sorrento’s conveniently placed train station.

Peak District National Park, England

Zoe From Zoe Goes Places

Peak District National Park is one of the United Kingdom’s most visited national parks. And, for good reason – the scenic countryside is as stereotypically British and beautiful as they come.

The Peak District is one of the best outdoor adventure destinations in April in Europe as it gives you the best chance to avoid the crowds. Few British people and international tourists holiday in the Peak Distract at this time of year. Additionally, in April, you’ll enjoy almost 14 hours of daylight to make the most of the walks, trails, activities and quaint countryside towns, as well as off-season accommodation prices.

I would recommend staying in the centre of the Peak District National Park for easy access to different parts, including towns like Buxton and Castleton.

Undoubtedly, going on scenic walks in the countryside is one of the best things to do. Ladybower Reservoir is a great spot for a flat and easy walk, while peaks such as Mam Tor and Chrome Hill have incredible views. In addition, one other must-do activity in the Peak District is visiting local pubs for a pint of beer and food.

Weather And Directions

As the Peak District is located in the very middle of England, it’s easy to reach from much of the UK. If you are travelling internationally, fly into Manchester Airport – it’s just 12 km from the national park boundary. From the airport, it’s a short drive, bus or taxi to whichever of the many towns and villages in which you choose to stay.

The weather in April is 50 to 60 Fahrenheit (or 10 to 15 Celsius) and there are typically 3.2 inches (83 mm) of rain spread over 16 or so days.

Hotel Recommendation

Zoe says, “I would recommend staying in the centre of the Peak District National Park for easy access to different parts, including towns like Buxton and Castleton.

Consider Pomeroy Caravan Park and Campsite because it’s exceptionally well-equipped and clean, plus you can feed the pygmy goats and enjoy the most delicious homemade ice cream from the farm’s dairy cows.”

One of the best days in April is the 23rd, Sant Jordi day, the day the patron Saint of Catalonia is commemorated. Sant Jordi is one of the most romantic days of the year as it is a kind of Catalan Valentine’s Day.

In keeping with the legend surrounding Saint Jordi, men give their beloveds a red rose, while women give their men a book. As a result, locals sell books and red roses all over the city. In addition, Casa Batlló, a beautiful house in the city center whose facade was designed in the Sant Jordi theme by Barcelona architect Gaudí, is decorated with many red roses.

While other European beaches are still cold at this time of the year, a visit to Barcelona’s beach is already possible. Even if the temperature of the water is not to your liking, you can already lie in the warming sun or plan an extended walk on the beach.

There are many Barcelona day tours available in April. However, at any time of year, a visit to Barcelona must include exploring Sagrada Família, a creative masterpiece of architectural design by Gaudi and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In April, cherry blossoms are in the neighboring park offering even more beautiful photos.

Weather And Directions

Averaging temperature in Barcelona is 64°F with only about 2 inches (or 55 mm) of rain over six days during the month.

Barcelona has three international airports in its vicinity. From the main airport, El Prat Barcelona, to the city center, it only takes about 40 minutes.

Sarajevo is one of the best places to visit in April in Europe. There’s no better time to visit than spring, when the weather is warm, the city is quiet, the spring flowers have bloomed, and festivals and religious holidays mark the change of the season.

Sarajevo is a dream destination for history buffs, and April is an auspicious month to visit as it is the anniversary of the city’s liberation from the Nazis in 1945. More recently, the Siege of Sarajevo began in April 1992. Both anniversaries are honored this month. Take a tour of the tunnels and war museum to learn more about the city’s past – many companies offer thought-provoking experiences for tourists.

On a lighter note, April’s calendar is filled with festivals and events including the Sarajevo Spring Music Festival. Easter celebrations bring outdoor concerts and other traditions to the streets of the city, with Roman Catholic Easter celebrated, followed by Orthodox Easter a few weeks later.

With the change in weather comes abundant spring produce, and Sarajevo’s marketplaces take on a new vibrancy. This is the perfect time to do a food tour and learn about the city’s culinary traditions.

April temperatures are warm and perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, whether it’s in the hills around the city or on a day trip from Sarajevo. To see wildflowers, head to Mostar and Pocitelj, two of the country’s most beautiful spots that are even better without the summer crowds.

Chilly evenings (40 °F on average) are perfect for cozying up at a wine bar or tea house inside the Old Bazaar.

Weather And Directions

You can expect an average high of 60 °F during the day. Though much drier than winter, spring can still bring light rain – so pack your wet weather gear.

Sarajevo is easy to reach by direct flight from Western Europe. The city’s international airport is located 20 minutes by car from the center.
